Shaw's

Fairly standard routine for a retail environment: work is delegated from the top down, and retail managers and part time employees alike must prioritize that work. Deliveries come in 3 times a week, which must be worked as soon as possible, as well as maintaining high volume shelf levels (bread, eggs, milk, bottled water, sale items, etc), and any excess product. 

I learned a lot about how to deal with large groups of co-workers (as many as 10 at a time) who are all trying to accomplish their own specific goals set out in the stores bigger picture. I learned a lot of retail skills, such as product placement and stock rotation. I learned a lot about the importance of organization, and getting product to the right place as soon as possible to reduce overall clutter in the work environment. Most importantly, I learned how to prioritize work tasks: even though the pile of back stock may be 10 feet tall, it's much more important to work high volume product first - even if it takes your entire shift.

The management at Shaw's is generally apathetic. No one is mean or overall bad at their job - they just don't care. Enthusiasm and morale have been low for years because the overall state of the company has been poor. The Union ensures that their jobs are safe so long as their store and seniority are not threatened, and no further incentive is provided to make sure that they approach their job enthusiastically. Therefore, they just don't care, and it shows in the way treat both their employees and their store.

My direct co-workers are the only reason I have stayed at Shaw's for as long as I have. I've met wonderful people who guarantee to be life long friends, including my significant other. Most of the part timers truly care about the job they do, and it shows in the way they treat their customers. As in any place, there are bad apples who are lazy and make the job harder for everyone. Unfortunately, because my store is a Union store, their jobs are safe from laziness and they can only be let go because of a serious transgression.

The hardest part of the job is the recent volume. Our Grocery Department used to have over 10 part timers on delivery nights - now, we're lucky when we have 4. Combined with the recent 25% increase in sales, and our crew is highly taxed and pressured to work quickly and efficiently.

The most enjoyable part of the job is when all the tasks are finished: new product is worked, back stock is worked, sale products and high  volume product is full, the back room is clean and organized, and the department is presentable to the customer. Accomplishing those tasks in the allotted time awards me with a sincere sense of pride.

Shaws is, overall, a good way to get one's foot in the door when it comes to entry level jobs and acquiring experience that is applicable to other workplaces. The average day involved coming into the store, punching in at the timeclock, and then usually bagging or doing other minor front end tasks like cleaning registers that were closed, or restocking candy on shelves by the belts. Once a coworker was scheduled to go on break or go home, I would be assigned a lane, open up on said lane while taking customers from another one, and working on this register more or les uninterrupted until break. Oftentimes I would be attempting to sell customers on products that we sold, or offering recipes to encourage returns for different meals. All the while I would be handling check, cash and electronic financial transfers. This would often happen either all night if we had baggers, or if we didn't, I would be tasked with doing things like cleaning up trash around the front end, moving shopping carts into the store, or collecting recyclables to be moved to the back of the store. 

Management was, well, Spotty. The individual managers were all mostly very nice people who were open and willing to listen and lenient and instructive with regards to mistakes. The problem seemed mostly to be a lack of proper communications between them, leading to lots of changing circumstances in business operations, or completely different means to deal with customers' problems, leading to an overall inconsistent feeling to the store. Coworkers ranged the gamut from pleasant, hardworking people to very difficult and unpleasant people, though the seemingly arbitrary nature of who was assigned to what times meant that working hours could be a craps-shoot chemistry-wise depending on who happened to be working.

The hardest part of the job, overall, are the hours. That is to say, hours are largely inconsistent and varying, while the Union mandates you get at least 15 hours a week, that could ping-pong between 15 hours and 30 hours, with little to no warning due to the weekly nature of the working schedule. This often led to stress about bills and ability to balance work and life comfortably. On the other hand, the best part of the job was hands down working with customers. Overwhelmingly customers were friendly, polite, and more than willing to engage and talk with me, creating a friendly, happy atmosphere where people felt helped and I felt appreciated for my work, giving me a great deal of pride in what I was doing.

Communicate and resolve customer complaints and inquiries; escalate issues; develop awareness tools for the achievement of highly satisfied customers.
Determine customer service needs and requirements by maintaining contact with customers. 
Accomplish customer service and human resource objectives by recruiting, selecting, orienting, training, scheduling, coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees.
Communicate job expectations, plan, monitor, appraise and review job contributions. 
Utilize CRM data to coach and develop customer service staff.
Select and promote staff to preform delegated tasks. Monitor and develop associates in their new roles.  Establish team coaches for the training and education of new associates.
Define and communicate customer service policies and procedures.  Oversee the achievement and maintenance of agreed customer service levels and standards.
Achievement of financial objectives through contributing customer service information and recommendations to department personnel.
Development of action plans, implementation of action plans and reviewing the quality of action plans as well as their change.
Direct the daily operations of the customer service team.  Ensure the necessary tools and resources are available for quality customer service delivery. 
Attend weekly management meetings to support and assist in the implementation of growth strategies.  Coordinate and oversee customer service projects and initiatives.  Review and ensure budget and inventory requirements are met.
Oversee Service-desk operations; enforce policies and procedures with desk personnel; provide and maintain all required signage ensuring its visibility to customers. 
Reconcile daily inventories and sales of Service-desk supplies, specifically lottery and Money Gram/ Money Orders.
Ensure daily reconciliation of all bookkeeping records, isolating known issues and reporting them to management. 
Monitor, track, report and investigate potential loss and actual loss to the store director and Loss Prevention team.
Participate in store walk through and provide feedback.
Communicate and collaborate with department heads to ensure every department is running at a 100%.

I enjoyed my time working for this company. Working at the fun grocery store has been an absolute delight from day one! It's not your typical grocery store; it's a magical place where work feels like play. Here's why I adore being part of this fantastic team:

What happens within the corporate part of the company is far removed from what actually happens in the stores. The corporate culture treats all stores the same overall and what works for most stores will not work for some others.  There is a severe lag in communication between corporate offices and the stores. There is too much money being spent on useless meetings and show and sells ( grand displays to impress top level associates) Because many stores are unionized, there is limited opportunities to be trained in multiple departments within the stores. After more than 30 years of service at Shaws, I've been consistently disappointed  with undisciplined department managers and even with an occasional senior manager in the stores. On the positive side, stores hire persons with handicaps and disabilities when they can and I've seen these associates stay employed for many years, even decades. Most of the workers are devoted to their families and support you if you need to take time away from work to help others at home. The retail stores offer good part time jobs with limited benefits for college students and women who are concentrating most of their time raising young children. Older workers aren't as successful due to physical demands of some of the jobs. Department managers sometimes become frustrated with higher wages older workers receive if they been employed for a long time and try to cut their hours, even if the latter does  a decent job... most of this due to the unreasonable amount of labor allotted to each department. Because of  the nature of grocery retail, business demand fluctuates and a reasonable hourly schedule is not guaranteed, even for persons hired in full time positions. A worker can expect 30 to 40 hours for full-time and 10-25 hours for part-time. There are only a few full time jobs available with each location, but if you are flexible, there are opportunities aplenty if you're willing to have a longer commute.

I worked here all through high school and have extreme regrets about it. I wish I could go back in time so that I put in my two weeks after a few months of working there. The job itself is okay- you start off by not doing much besides bagging/getting carts and then you progress into cashiering. I hated being on the register all day long, especially when it was slow because I got extremely bored.

Eventually, you get promoted to Customer Service Representative but do not get much of a raise. I got a $0.50 raise for going from cashiering to customer service. I did that and bookkeeping for a couple of years despite having terrible pay. I did not know where else to work and thought meh I might as well just stay here and keep things simple. Well, that was a huge mistake on my end.

Here I am making a couple of dollars over minimum wage after two years in the company and multiple "promotions". Three years later and I was a few bucks over the hourly wage that I started at. I left not long after that and have not been back since.

I always wonder what I could have accomplished if I worked at a higher-paying company with a better work environment for a young adult/teenager. I was dumb for staying for so long... I admit it. I spent the rest of my time in college at a higher-quality grocery store and it was for sure one of the best decisions of my life. Quality of life shot upward and I met tons of wonderful people that never would have worked at a company like Shaw's. I genuinely enjoy being there which is something I never even came close to feeling while I was at Shaw's. This is a good job for you if you do not care about making money or being satisfied.

A typical day at work, I was either a cashier or a service desk clerk, which involved, refunds, exchanges, money transfers using Money Gram, customer service and information, transactions using cash credit cards vouchers and debit cards. Counting all cash drawers as well as the safe. Counting and selling lottery tickets, recording daily transactions and drawer amounts.

I learned SO much working here. I learned how to use a cash register as a cashier, but I learned most things while working in the service desk. I learned how to till count cash, and add up all of the stores transactions and record them for management, I learned how to transfer money and make money orders, as well as providing customer service and information.

Management was a dream, they always had the answers to your questions and strived to make Shaws a great place to work and shop. They were always understanding and aware of customers needs as well as their employees needs. Schedules were always up on Friday by 3 o'clock, everyone got along great and people were rarely ever 'in toruble' with them. They understood how to make you feel important and involved with their company.

My cowokers there were amazing they are still good friends of mine to this day, there was never any friction between any of us.

The hardest part of the job was how busy it got., and even then it wasn't unbearable, especially at service desk, lucky for me I am always able to adapt to my environment and give it my all.

Everything was enjoyable about that job, if you needed more hours, they gave them to you, they never gave you less than the required 15, unless you asked for it. It was a friendly and fun work environment. I never once had the thought "Ughhh I have work today."

20 years ago, it was a good job and company. Now it is owned by an equity firm, and they could care less about anything but profits at all costs. If you do the math that is hard hours for low wages. Department managers have it worst as they need to get the job done with people who don't want to do what is being asked. Pay is stagnant meaning most salaries are the same as 20 plus years ago as a starting wage. To show how good the company was to what it has now become as a real case example. Most good store management has left the company or retired being filled in by what was left. They have an unfair expectation and workload in almost every case hence all the bad management reviews. Some of these people are decent but far and in-between. You'll give everything and just a bit more is always needed. I imagine the person who would do best at this company is the person who does not care and shows up and does the bare bone minimum and has a whatever attitude. If you want to do well and or be the best, then do not make this your stop as you will be disappointed. If you need some easy money, get in and aim for an assistant department manager a dime a dozen at this point. Just keep asking for more money or you'll have to leave, and you should do ok for some quick cash while you work on life's plan. This company will close I have no doubt if it is a year or 10 from now as its hemorrhaging employees leaving a bigger workload and the only thing keeping it afloat is low pay to keep prices competitive. If they try to correct this, it will no longer work profitably for the equity firm, and they will ditch it. they closed a few dozen stores or more when they first bought it. Have not opened any since purchasing it the writing is clearly written on the wall for anyone with a brain. Good luck and have fun 20 plus years but not another second. 

- Management is dishonest and lies about everything. They tell you what they think you want to hear but wont intend to follow through.

- There is no intention of promoting people interally to new positions. They say they will consider you to get you to stop asking but then immediatly hire someone with no experiance for management positions.

- If you have health issues, disabilities, or are a caregiver for someone where you cant fully dedicate your time to the company then you are actively with-held certain benefits, have your hours cut, or even a pay cut.

- Verbal Abuse and Workplace Toxicity is tolerated to the point that management wont even file the complaints.

- Every month the benefits get worse but the price only ever goes up or stays the same.

- Workplace is extremely inefficient using 5 different systems to order items used during the business and all the equipment is bogged down with new updates that never get fully replaced.

- Company wastes millions of dollars on new "programs" or "systems" just to abandon them a week later

- PPO Insurance is actually an HMO in function. 

- Insurance requires 14 days for prior authorization for approval to pick up Insulin.

- The company neglects basic level maintenance to improve quarterly profits. for example they cut back on toilet paper so much its more likely to not have toilet paper in the bathrooms than it is to actually have any in there. But they brag record profits for the 5th year in a row.

- When an employee quits they never get replaced. The current existing staff is supposed to pick up the slack or face pay cuts.




What is the best word I can think of to describe the place oh yea Hades.When I was still in school the word Shaws was a Taboo in the air nobody in there right mind wanted to work there. when you went into work you could feel the sense of dread and despair from going through the doors tell you right now aint no one smiling at there job there not even if it were a fake one. the store directors dont even kno who there empolyees are. example I just went in there a couple months ago and there store director ask if I was there for a check and I said no i hadnt worked there in a long time and he said oh sorry I dont kno half the ppl who work in here. also hours are very inconsistent youll never has a set sleep schedule. the could have you there one day in the morning the next at night and the next in the middle. no one wanted to do there job there, Ive had ppl tell me they mess around all day and get paid for doing nothing or bare minimum. I even had to fight with the store director to get rid of the trash in the bottle room cause ppl would leave there trash in there and it was so bad smelled like a dead corpse in there half the time and no one wanted to clean it so I had to. also whoever would do it often left glass totes from the machines unattended which is a safety hazzards actually they had a few safety and heath hazzards there. plus the managers where very bad no got along with thm and I cant tell you how many ppl left cause of there managers.  I even left cause one of them I asked simply where something was and they called me useless so I said Good Luck and left. if your looking for a job to just start out in this is not the place Id reccomend dont go here. think of the worst possible job in the world and youll find this place to be ten times worst I guarantee it.
