SingerLewak isn't a terrible company. It just has ambitious growth without much plan other than "acquire as many firms as possible so we can make the top 100 accounting firm list". 

It's hard to review this company because the experience and culture are so vastly different at each site. There are some great people there, and there are some horrible ones - I encountered both. If you are interviewing, try and meet as many people as you can and ask who you will be working with. 

I like that Singerlewak had a small office feel with the ability to tap into the experience of a larger firm. We were a smaller office acquired, and the quality of our product and the expertise we were able to leverage was a godsend. But there was little to no strategy for assimilating our office to the SL culture. As a result the morale was terrible. 

Your experience will be different depending on where you end up. I worked 60 hours during busy season, but some other offices were hitting 80+. But if you're looking for midsize experience in a midsize firm, it's worth an interview.

Overall, this is a decent firm. They have a large tax and audit department. Business management is small and not run well. Turnover in partners in that department is high and managers are not all knowledgeable about performance requirements at all levels. Some employees are asked to do more than their position requires, while others can do less and are promoted. If your education does not include a degree, you will not be promoted. If you have a degree, you will not be a manager unless you pass the CPA. When you pass the CPA, you MIGHT become a manager. When you are a CPA, the firm will do all it can to make sure your annual requirements are fulfilled and you are able to maintain your license. I wouldn't have left if management was better.

SingerLewak has become a second home. The company offers supportive management, a casual work environment and lots of fun things. Benefits are decent, pay is good and they offer reviews 1-2 times a year. They try to promote from within as much as possible and its really nice to see people actually move up in the company. There is one person that is partner level that has been with the company since he was an intern. Over the last year the HR Department has drastically improved and things seem to be running fairly smoothly now. I would definitely recommend checking out SingerLewak. I hope to stay for many years.

Life within individual offices is very dependent on partners, and there are some great partners within the firm. But where SingerLewak falls short is its desire to expand but lack of planning foresight to make sure acquisitions are brought up to speed to properly integrate into SingerLewak culture. Once an office is acquired, it loses all autonomy and is at the mercy of the parent office. High expectations with little or no training, planning, or communication. Staff feels like it is a tug of war between local and parent offices. Little focus on client service. All these add together to make a very poor company culture.

if you’re not part of some partners' clique they won’t promote you, recognize you or help you. Some good partners have left and inadequate and unprofessional partners have taken over their responsibilities. 
The firm used to be good, but has gone downhill for a while.

Meeting the deadlines established requries long hours. The ability to handle multiple client deadlines at once is rewarded. The firm always seems to be understaffed requiring the current staff to work more hours.

Definately a great firm for the driven.

I have been with SingerLewak over 1 year and am really enjoying it. Upper management is great and it seems that past issues have been worked out. They try to have a good work/life balance and everyone is very nice. Getting to wear jeans every day is great! They try to promote from within as much as possible and even have promotion parties 2 times a year to celebrate those that got promoted.

All anyone cares about is meeting their "precious" budgets. They don't care nor are they at all interested in helping you learn or grow. If you're not up-to-speed in 2 months they get rid of you. Horrible!!! Stay away!!!

My experience  working at SingerLewak was an experience  I will never forget.  To sum it up  there was very poor management,   didn’t pay enough,  and was a very blind folded racist company with a hostile environment.  I wouldn’t recommend this job to anyone. **BEWARE** Apply at your own risk.

The racial issue was Asian coworkers trashing a white client in a cubicle conversation.  Most of the SJ office was Asian so it was super difficult to fit in there.  After that incident it was a chore trying to work there and also find a different job.
