Siskin Hospital for Physical Rehabilitation

I've been at siskin for a couple of years and up until recently it wasn't a bad place to work. It still isn't a terrible place, however, the management is not good at communication at all. At times the supervisors talk down to staff, and instead of teaching the correct way of doing things they simply want to write you up or make you feel incompetent. When you ask a question they don't give you a  straight answer, or if they do, it's an "I think..." response, instead of going to their superior and finding out a correct response. There have been several changes recently, and many policies that have been newly enforced or brand new altogether, and yet weren't announced. The pay is not very good, and it does no good to try and negotiate pay because HR tells you it's determined by the director of nursing and the DON tells you it's HR's decision... And it just goes on and on. In the past couple of months I would estimate they have lost about 20% of their staff, either to firing or people quitting. They stay short staffed, and don't want to compensate for it. They used to give bonuses if they needed you to come in and work on an off day or stay over but they cut that out completely. I enjoy working with the patients, and I enjoy the stuff on the floor that I work with, however, because of management I can't see myself staying with Siskin much longer.

Overall, it's an okay place. We have seen some big changes over the last couple of years. One change has been the CEO and nurse managers. CEO only cares about money. He cuts supplies out, buying cheaper products for our patients, restricts our access to getting supplies we need so that we have to depend on a supervisor to get something for us (better hope its not an urgent need...). Our equipment is all the time needing to be repaired, vital machines that dont read correct readings. BUT to rectify this- he brings around cheap snacks (usually off brand) once every couple of months to "show us appreciation". I have worked here for years and he does not remember my name (or that I am a seasoned employee). Pay is sub-par unless you work night shift and get the differential- but at the cost of the health effects associated with working night shift. New nurse managers are absent. very rarely see them, they dont acknowledge you, or reply to you when you sent them an email or text. i used to love working here. We are chronically understaffed and over worked for sub-par pay. 

This company is great for the purpose of therapy. If you've had a surgery or stroke and need rehabilitation services good. But as a nurse on the floor be prepared for the jungle. It's RN/BSN against LPN all the time. If your manager is over the stroke and brain injury floors, be prepared to get bullied. When being reprimanded she will not let you voice your opinion, she will call you names, and she is not afraid to remind you all the time that she can and will replace you with someone else. She will threaten you (to report you to state) and she will ask you to empty out your pockets to check for cellphones. It's a very hostile work environment and only the strong survive. Your anxiety will go through the roof! Charge nurses who think they know everything and will dismiss your suggestions. Laptops on med carts are always going out. Bladder Scanners that are always malfunctioning. Bottom line if you are good at kissing butt and can hang with management your good to go if you aren't good at those things then don't work for this company.

We work 12 hour shifts. Coming from a nursing home background, I learned how to manage my time and to  work wise (on account of the overwhelming work load). Being at Siskin has helped me to use thae skills productively.  I enjoy that the caseload to each CNA is more manageable. The most patients I have had was 13...never the 27-30 I had at a nursing home. My direct management has proven to be untrustworthy, lacks good communication and doesn't honor confidentiality of employees. It is disconcerting and I find it to be a problem. Also (and I think this is anywhere you go), there are those handful of nurses that will never be willing to assist, but expect the world.
With all of that said, I still believe that Siskin is a wonderful place to work. Most of the staff is serious and joyful about what they do and are there to assist the patients in gaining back their independence.

It TAKES to long to Start the job that you get hired for. The process is so poorly managed. For instance, if they hire you June 25,2018 they will bring you into him an rescources for the offer letter. That same week they will have you come back three separate days that week for things that could of been scheduled an completed in the same day. Oh, it gets worser.....they will continue to have you come to the office 2 to 3 days every week for things like blood work, 2 tb skin test, all type of stuff. After all this back an forth you will find out you have to wait 1 month to start work because they only do orientation on the first day of each month. I believe they stretch out the things needed to get done....to keep people interested in the job. I would honestly say, don't bother working here...... I been waiting for almost 3 weeks for stuff to get done until It got to the point to where I said...enough is enough. Just keep the job. I know longer want it. I would never recommend Siskin......try any other hospital.

A typical work day consisted of briefing with prior shift, discussing ever changing needs of patients and potential extra needs per the physicians' orders.  The opportunity to be involved via committees was invaluable and enabled personal ownership of my daily expectations.  

I learned to be acutely aware of the needs of both patients and peers and how to meet those needs without sacrificing ethics.  Management was very hands on and willing to assist in education and honing in skills needed to meet the needs of the patients.

The hardest part of the job was saying goodbye to recovered patients.  It was also the most enjoyable part of the job as our team efforts paid off and patients were able to recover and return to their lives.

Siskin was a pretty great place to work about a year ago, within the last 6 months however it has gone downhill. They used to give bonuses for coming in early or on your off day, that cut that out completely. They also used to care about employees and would work with you when it came to disciplinary action. Now they go straight to a write up/termination. Recent changes in middle management have resulted in the loss of a ton of nursing staff, many of which who are great employees and the patients loved. Also this hospital is not rehab. We were getting patients straight from the ICU to a rehab bed, with not even a day of med/surge in between. This place has become so desperate for money it no longer cares about patients or employees. Simply the dollar signs that come with admitted patients as quickly as possible. Shame on Siskin, honestly hold out and work somewhere else!!

Management is awful. Siskin has good culture, although management shows favoritism and schedules and hires people who don't know how to work. The nurses are way too overpaid. They mostly just sit all day unless they have to god forbid do their job and pass out medication. Although its not all bad the residents are very appreciative to be receiving therapy and show considerable improvement. As a CNA you're not respected by your nurses even though you do the majority of their work. All in all it seems to be good on the outside but managements attitude and non consideration for their CNA's is not worth the hassle working here. You cant make your own schedule without arguing with nursing manager and everyone's attitude is like a polite f you. CNA's are the backbone of their operation yet no one pulls their weight other than the CNA's. 

A typical day starts early ends late! Working with in & out of town hospitals keep you busy. I have learned not everyone works the same, you must be flexible, and understanding of different personalities, work ethics. Management is fair, work place is high energy, fun or not depending on YOUR attitude! I would say the most frustrating thing about this position is communication. That is common place don't you think? Why I stay at Siskin, there are many reasons. It's very rewarding watching patients recover from all types of injuries that happen in our lives. Your work place is what you make it. I choose to be happy in mine.

With the right management the company has a lot of potential. At times the culture is resistant to positive change. Communication and support from management and HR is difficult and often poor. Benefits are poor to start but become generous with longevity at the company. High turnover in upper management in addition to changes to CEO and HR slowed forward progress. Enjoyable patients with wonderful staff (peers). 

Therapy specific: Medically complex, post surgical ortho, falls/ geriatric, neurologic population.  Often multidisciplinary care with PT/OT/SLP. Able to see patients in a one on one setting with use of PTAs. In outpatient patients often see 2-4 providers rather than having a primary therapist, though this is clinic specific. Recent higher turnover of younger therapists.
