The most rewarding part of this position was caring for patients and working alongside a few dedicated team members. Unfortunately, my experience at the Zionsville location was negatively impacted by what I perceived as a toxic workplace culture. New employees are expected to absorb a significant amount of information in a very short period of time (4 day training on machine, one 2 hr training on EMR), yet there is a lack of structured training and consistency in how procedures are performed and taught.

I frequently received conflicting instructions from different team members, making it difficult to determine the correct workflow and clinical expectations. When I sought clarification, I often felt discouraged from asking questions rather than supported in learning.  Was spoken to in a demeaning manner by my colleague, and told not to ask questions. Was then instructed to refer to the online portal for power point presentations. When doing so was spoken down to again.  I had never experienced such poor treatment in my entire career, not even as a student. After 3 days of this consistent treatment I decided this was not the best fit for me. As a licensed healthcare professional, I take patient safety seriously and found it concerning to be placed in situations where I did not feel adequately trained or guided. Where you’re spoken to in a demeaning manner. 

The hardest part of the job was navigating inconsistent expectations and communication. The company would benefit from stronger and a more structured onboarding process, and a workplace culture that encourages respectful communication, mentorship, and professional growth. 

While the compensation may appear competitive , it is important to understand the scope of the role. Unlike traditional radiation therapy positions where responsibilities are divided among multiple departments, therapists at SkinCure are expected to perform the work of an entire department. Responsibilities include treatment planning, simulations, treatment delivery, charting, scheduling, insurance verification and follow up, billing related tasks, patient communication, and navigating multiple EMR systems. The pay is about 10% more than traditional therapy. 



Typical work day can vary based on the office you are placed in. But a typical day for me starts with warming up the machine, performing daily treatments, charting treatments in EMR, occasionally being pulled in to the exam room by a provider to discuss SRT for patients who are there to go over treatment options for their skin cancer. Occasionally calling patients to discuss positive pathology results and discussing treatment options that may include Surgery vs. SRT. Sending insurance information over to verification specialist to verify a patient's coverage for SRT and communicating this information with the patient. Scheduling initial Simulation after coverage has been verified and coordinating treatments 3-4 times a week and OTVs with the Dermatologists. I love the fact that I get to do my own scheduling and I am involved with the patient from start to finish, including their initial follow up. The workplace culture is very much team oriented, even though much of the communication with management, billing/verification staff, and other RTTs is done via e mail or phone, everyone is very friendly and willing to jump in and help one another. The hardest part of the job is you can often feel as though you are competing with MOHS surgery and it can be hard to convince providers that SRT is an option that is comparable to surgery or in some cases a better option than surgery. I think one of the best parts of the job is that you are the expert in your field within your practice, and that means you have the opportunity to educate your practice and your patients on SRT as a non-surgical alternative to non-melanoma skin cancer with excellent cure rates. You also have a lot of independence as you are typically the one scheduling your patients, treating them, and writing up prescriptions based on proven protocols (with the physician's signature of course). I will say that this position is very different from the typical hospital environment, and that may or may not be your thing. Overall, a great company to work for.

The worst interview experience I’ve had in a professional healthcare setting. The entire time, the manager was looking out the window as I was talking to them. And, had a lack of questions towards me during my interview. Felt like they just wanted to find someone to fulfill their job position and didn’t care about my background or experience.

One of the major problems I saw is that they are trying to put a normal Radiation Oncology workflow into a Dermatology setting. As a RTT, you are taking on the role of a RT, dosimetrist, physicist, and doctor. Not in their entire responsibilities, but you are generating prescriptions from a rubric, tweaking dose rates, calculating dose adjustments from missed treatment dates, etc. All of these things are under specified responsibilities in a normal Rad Onc department. There is specified physics/docs to help within the company, but all virtual. Especially in Rad Onc responsibilities, virtual sounds nice, but in reality it’s not efficient. Radiation has been in dermatology settings for awhile, but when you throw in an imaging component and additional Rad Onc responsibilities, you can’t simply expect all the weight to fall on an RTT to hold the responsibility of a Rad Onc Dept in a dermatologist office.

The hierarchy and outreach to external staff is not great. At each practice you are the sole RTT and representative of Rad Onc in a dermatologist office. If a patient comes in, you are choosing a prescription from a rubric, and if you have a question about it, it gets escalated to a group chat with people that have the same RTT credentials. If they can’t answer it, then it goes to the Rad Onc doctor regarding tweaking a prescription dosage. I get we don’t want to waste the doctor’s time, but it is a greater waste of time to throw a question around regarding a patient through a series of jumps to get my question answered.


A typical work day can consist of 10-15 patient for smaller clinics or 15-25 patient for larger clinics. A typical day of work is low stress and each patient usually only takes 15-20 minutes depending on how many treatment sites they have. Treatment setups are unique for every patient, some more challenging then others. Everything that I have learned about SRT was hands on training. College did not touch on SRT and the process was new to me but after a couple weeks of training I was confident enough to set up patients, chart, schedule, and bill patients by myself. My regional manager is great and is always available for communication. My practice have several difference dermatology offices so I have a great team of SRT therapist that I can fall back onto if need be. The workplace culture is very nice. I am the only therapist in my office so you will be working alone for the most part. I enjoy this because there are less distractions and less drama. I get along quit well with the physicians and PAs as well as clinical staff. The hardest part of the job would be getting comfortable and confident about setting patients up on your own and following protocols for doses ( the protocol tells you what range to stay in but it is your decision in the end). The best part of the job is being able to connect with patients and to see the progress with your very own eyes ( you can see the ultrasound measurements decrease as well as a physical appearance of the treatment site vanish) and giving patients another option compared to Mohs surgery. SRT is just as effective as Mohs and requires no cutting, sutures, special care, scars and is great for patient who are diabetic or have a site that can not be surgically removed without causing major pain or deformity. I would highly recommend working for Skin Cure Oncology. Soon SRT will be the new gold standard for skin cancer.

In the early years, it was great. Management listened,  cared, cooperative, made it seem like they valued their RTTs because we were told we were such an important/intregal part of the company because we're the ones treating patients. But there are unrealistic expectations of what is attainable in a normal working day. I believe they are definitely patient care prioritized, but I also strongly believe they've become money driven as well over the years - I've not only watched it but equally experienced it. If upper management's job is to harbor a culture of "support" for the RTT's, my regional is great, but they also answer to upper management. So their expectations for me trickle down from above them who haven't treated a patient in years if hardly been in the clinical setting to know what it is they're truly asking of you in the first place. They couldn't do the things they're asking of you but yet it's expected. More work, less help...and I'm expected to overextend myself even after I ask for help and be told - again from management - "you can't make everyone happy." You're right, you can't. But, if multiple RTTs are saying the same thing, 1. you should listen and 2. its not us. its you. All RTTs can't have poor time management. It's unrealistic what's expected from for a normal working day. If I can't enjoy my life or my weekend because you're too concerned about offending a practice provider who makes millions anyway from Moh's - you're not patient focused. You're money driven. And definitely not company conscious. I left the hospital setting to be valued and that's been on a steep decline over the last several years. 

I am a relatively new hire for Skin Cure Oncology.  After attending the retreat in San Antonio, I was super excited to be part of the team.  I really like all the people that I work with and I really enjoyed meeting everyone.  But I have to say that I am quite disappointed with the decision by management to cut all our hours.  This has been a big blow!  I left a full time job with a guaranteed 40 hour work week to have this major change.  This effects my family in a big way.  And quite frankly, I don't know if I can continue with Skin Cure long term due to this decision.  

I really like my regional manager; she is fantastic, always approachable and available to help.  I also like the culture of the clinic I am in, because everyone on the team is about the patient.  

The hardest part of the job is being completely confidant that I am treating the lesion properly.  My current provider asks me how I plan to treat a lesion.... I was so used to a radiation oncologist determining energy/volumes/etc. and to now be on the other side of this decision making process a bit of challenge.  It has been and will continue to be a learning curve.

The best part of the job for Skin Cure Oncology is the people. My patients are amazing!!  I like all the staff I work with.  Another nice perk working for Skin Cure Oncology is the schedule flexibility.

But ultimately, even with the best of perks, I don't know if I can ride out the storm.  I hope that management with begin to communicate how long this might continue.  I need to make the best decision that I need to support myself and family.

If you are organized, self-sufficient and have a friendly personality, then SkinCure would be a great fit for you. You will handle the care of your patients from post-biopsy to post-treatment follow up and almost be the sole employee they encounter in that time period. It is a very hands-on/quick thinking environment. Superficial Radiation Therapy is an up and coming, great alternative to surgery for non-melanoma skin cancers and the patients really appreciate having the option to choose and love their results after it's all done. Many come back time and time again. Most clinics have great hours and some are closed Fridays/every other Friday/half-day Fridays etc so it gives you the option to get your life's appts taken care of. You will also be in charge of your own patient schedule. Some of us initiate the patient's verification of benefits with our billing specialists, call the patients with their results and discuss their options with them, making your job more varied than most radiation positions. It can be intimidating at first but the management and your fellow therapists are there to answer any questions and provide any help you need. It was a life-saver for me because traditional radiation was wearing and stressing me out for so many reasons. I hope I never have to go back.

Every job has pros and cons. For me, SkinCure has mostly pros. SkinCure provides great benefits and a match for 401K. FSA available. Competitive pay. Great work-life balance. Holiday pay. Float Holiday. Great PTO limit. 

Additionally, you actually feel so valued and heard as an employee. Upper management is incredible!

Cons would be that you are working "alone". You manage the day to day operations within your dermatology practice for all upcoming and current radiation patients. So you definitely need strong multi-tasking and organization skills. However, you really aren't "alone". Your manager and other therapists are always a phone call, text, or email away. If you need help, all you have to do is ask for it. The culture at this company is amazing. Teamwork is strongly emphasized. They also train you and set you up for success for this new role you are taking on. Even though I am the only therapist within my dermatology practice, I have never felt "alone" in my role.

It is definitely overwhelming at first, just like any new job would be, but once you get the hang of it you will never want to go back to a traditional cancer center.

The company also hires from within a lot, so the potential for upward professional growth is high. 

They claim to be a work life balance company and that seems to be untrue. You will be over worked and even with decent compensation it isn’t enough for the workload and hours you will be expected to do. You are sent for one week of training and then placed into chaos on your own. You are responsible for all scheduling which they say is based on your availability but really it is the availability and expectations of the provider. You are responsible to submit all insurances, go over payments and payment plans with patients, SIM all patients, treat patients, answer all phone calls, answer any questions from patients, chart all patients etc on your own. It is too much for one person, especially if you are placed into a busy office. The machines consistently break down or glitch and the providers are only moderately experienced in radiation therapy. So you are on your own in that department. Management does not have your back. Do not do it, it’s not worth your sanity and stress, unless you want to consistently work over 40+ hours a week and still not get everything done or sleep at night. 

There is a lot of responsibility as the only therapist onsite. You must be prepared to take on learning and engaging with the practice you would be working with. If you have worked in a traditional cancer center with electrons, this modality will be easy to learn. The hardest part of the job is becoming an expert in the electronic medical records and billing. You will be trained on all things prior to being set out on your own, but you must be diligent in keeping up with your daily tasks which include patient education, community outreach, business development, and maintaining your program in compliance with state regulations. There is ALWAYS support. SkinCure has created a network and culture where you never feel alone. You will be working by yourself but there is always someone available if you need help. There is a community of people that are always willing to help via email, facetime, text, and even on site if needed. I feel like the management works diligently to support the staff and shows appreciation. Pay is competitive based on state and experience.
