Similar to most retail/sales positions, your tasks are to tidy up the show room upon opening the store, proactively learn about existing or new products you sell or changes/updates, with the rest of the day spent engaging with customers, educating them, and selling to customers what they need.

Where it differs from other retail/sales positions is the control the 2 managers had over new entry-level sales staff coming in, which vastly differed from Slumberland's employee contracts.  The arbitrary words/actions of the 2 managers also differed from what was said in the interview, on the job description, or in the onboarding documents for commission.

When I started, the 2 managers (separately) told me they didn't want new sales staff because it would cut into their own sales.  So, to me it appeared Managers are recruiting a revolving door of new sales staff because they are required to.  They also wouldn't initially give me the software/hardware to complete 80 training modules, and told me if I didn't get trained, they would keep pushing back when I could be eligible for commission.  At one point, they pushed back my eligibility for commission more than 3 months, even though they also said I would be expected to contribute substantial sales in that time.  The 2 managers would be getting commissions on my sales in the meantime.

They also made up new rules that were not in the new-hire commission structure, such as requiring that I split my commission with the Manager if I had a "one-off" question on how to process a sale (after I was put on commission-based pay).

In all, the frequently changing, & manipulation of the commission rules/structure, that always benefited the managers, is a red flag that potential employees need to be aware of.  There is no Human Resources Dept. if you object; there is only a third-party complaint line.

My only other observation is the Management is not inclusive in their speech, or in how they treat customers.

I have worked there for over 10 years and changes were made to my job almost weekly. There never seems to be a firm understanding of what needs to be done and by who. If you like never knowing what to expect from one day to the next and don't mind not having any job security, Slumberland is the place for you. 

The owners are nice people and seem smart enough but they let a few people run the day to day operations and they do not know what they are doing. For example: the goal for years has been on improving the online presence, but it took 3 years to improve and it is still well behind the competition. The prevailing theory is the sales people have done everything they can to sabotage the effort. That may be, but it could also be the people in charge don't know what they are doing. Everything is done as cheaply as possible  to make it look like they are saving the company money, but in reality everything has to be done and re-done multiple times to get it right. They keep shooting themselves in the foot and the hourly and salaried employees end up paying for it with no pay raises for years, reductions in benefits and multiple rounds of layoffs.

It is retail, and while they promote a good work life balance, weekends and holidays are work days for most employees. They are flexible with time off and leaving for appointments or family time is usually no problem if planned ahead of time. 

My advice: the company has been a good employer, but has been slipping the last few years. If you like attending a lot of pointless meetings, no job security, co-workers who don't put in much effort and management with no direction, then apply today!

Slumberland Furniture is a great place to work.  A typical work day starts out with arriving at the store, checking emails and orders.  Then there is a short cleaning period of making sure the store is ready to receive the first customer.  Then helping customers find exactly what they are looking for that will improve their life at home.  It is always a great feeling when I am able to assist a customer in finding something they love that will make their life in some way better at hope, from sleeping, to watching movies, to eating dinner with the family, to organizing the home space so that they have that sense of looking forward to going home.  I also love that at Slumberland the sales are a no pressure sales system.  I have learned a great deal about walking in another persons shoes through helping people improve their lives, both customers and peers.  The management is great, they give me the tools I need to succeed in helping others.  This enables and flows from the culture of Slumberland Furniture, not only is our mission to improve the lives of others, but to treat every person with love, dignity, and respect; and that is rare thing to find in todays world.  The hardest part of my job is not being able to get a customer their furniture as fast as they want it.  The best part of my job is that my work peers are a family, we all care about each other, and we all want to help everyone have a better life.  Working for Slumberland has not only made my life a good life, but I get to help others have a good life as well.

A typical day at work would start around 7am. You'd get your paperwork for the day of the deliveries and review everything you need for that day. We (my partner and myself) would load all the items onto the truck that customers ordered starting with the last delivery of the day first and first delivery last.

Deliveries would usually start about 8am and go until you were done. We'd have a two hour window between each delivery, giving us time for driving, delivering and setting up the furniture in each home. Always making sure the customer was satisfied and happy before we left, giving the best representation that we could of our company.

Management was awesome. Making sure that all the employees were on the same page, that all concerns were addressed and that the balance of work and life outside the buisness was a limited issue.

Hardest part of the job was carrying heavy furniture into a home and not damaging walls or other propery. Having great communication skills with your partners and knowing what each other is thinking was a big plus as was being able to get along and cope with each others personalities during stressful times.

Last but not least. The most enjoyable part was knowing you made the customers happy, the people you worked with became close friends and that you were appreciated for the job you have done.

It's nice because you have a set scheduled. You work the weekends but, you normally get 2 days off in a row so you pretty much still have a weekend. Works great if you like to fish or something don't have to fight the crowds :). I have learned a lot from first starting. I didn't really know anything about furniture. However, now I feel like I really can help people with there purchasing journey and give good honest feedback. Management is fair and understand, however I feel like people who get promoted at times should not have been picked. I don't feel like assistant and store managers should need help from sales associates. Work culture is usually pretty chill and people get along. There are other locations where it seems the work culture is very unfair and people get pushed around with ups etc. Hardest part of the job is knowing all of different pieces and mattresses. Sometimes it can get overwhelming but does it easier. The best part of the job is getting to help people and make there days a little easier and getting the right products. Most day's don't get overwhelming and you can get time to unwind and get ready for the next person.

- it’s pretty relaxed there in terms of the workplace culture, but due to the owner being condescending, hardly ever there, and lying about every little thing it is quite stressful and discouraging at the same time.
- the hardest part of the job was honestly the free labor. It is strictly commission after a certain point, there are no benefits at all, and you spend 8-10 hour shifts essentially just watching paint dry.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Poor management and very disorganized. . Lack of customer care and purposeful dishonesty to both the customer and its employees. This adds much stress to the job. I had to leave as it was affecting my daily life. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Very very disorganized , when you offer ideas to make things run more efficiently you are chastised. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Employees constantly complaining about how bad things are makes the day  mentally difficult. A lot of gossip and at times bullying. Coworkers lack the ability to work together along with arguments and distrust of others taking your sale and commission. It’s very cut throat, very difficult. Management refuses to step in. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
We go in early to clean the store. Being the only woman I cleaned the kitchen and work spaces as no one is hired to do so. Daily work includes helping customers, setting deliveries, ordering parts, and taking care of complaints. Weekends can be busy , weekdays can be terribly slow so they have you do more cleaning. Again as the only woman I took care of all store displays do the store stayed looking decent.

The people at a corporate level don’t know what they are doing and make all sorts of decisions without any regards to the well being of their employees. Their mission statement also only applies to select customers I saw multiple examples of the store losing customers because of the catty sales team just not caring. They’ve sold furniture that has come in moldy and the majority of the stuff that you order will come out of the box broken and if your not happy with something good luck getting it sorted out because they’re unbothered by it and when push comes to shove they won’t have your back at all. The only positive thing I can say is I learned how to fix a lot of things because of so much broken product. There is no job security if you work sales they will get rid of you if you don’t fit the clique and in the warehouse corporate may decide to get rid of you only to then decide they need more help months later completely unorganized and incompetent would never recommend working here or shopping here your money is best spent elsewhere.

The best part of the job is the people I work with and the manager we have. I have worked retail previously and I can't say many companies actually CARE about your well being as I have experienced here. Even the HR department offered assistance regarding mental health. I've certainly learned a lot about the furniture industry, and I appreciate not pressuring people to buy furniture. Some days are hit or miss and that's okay. This could be a doable job for a college student. LOTS of being on your feet, but get some good shoes and you'll be alright! If you're creative, enjoy home décor, and being around various types of people, this is a good job to fit that. You can wear comfortable, professional clothing. Slumberland does have opportunity for growth, unfortunately from my understanding, you have to be willing to move to enter management positions, which isn't typically suitable for most family situations.  The only reasons I gave a 4/5 is the health insurance cost is above expectation, and pay is reasonable for the job.

A typical day at work was long and boring with managers taking sales while sales people would be struggling to meet numbers. Our store had too many people trying to make sales in a small market area. Essentially you are set up to fail. Despite ongoing training there were just not enough customers and to many sales people to hit goals. The benefits seemed really great at first glance but were far from affordable. I had to get health care through healthcare.gov because the cost through my employer was over half of my income. Store managers were nice but the higher up the corporate ladder you researched the more you would see that you are at the bottom of the food chain. Trickle down economics at it's finest. While they live lavishly my co workers and I barely made it by living paycheck to paycheck or being forced to take out loans to cover everyday living expenses or to keep food on the table or clothes on our childrens' backs.
