It's such a shame to write this review because SNHD has so much potential. Sadly here's the truth.  The corruption with the CHOs and the directors never end. I'm not sure if it's the city or the power that comes with running the health department, but it gets tiring.  I was once told that this a place where lesser quality staff are taken, because of the difficulty in getting fired. Over the past 5 years, I've seen it all; favoritism, nepotism, culturalism and bigotry, to name a few. In my time there, I've seen nepotism in the form of directors having inappropriate relationships with staff 3-4 levels below them. I've seen multiple interviews rigged so that lesser qualified people stand out. Either the interview is tailored to a certain individuals strength or the position was opened for a specific person. They are suppose to be unionized, yet the union is not effective.  I've seen supervisor level positions developed out of nowhere. To get a promotion, forget education or being qualified; it's who does management favor at the time.  SNHD has  great retirement benefits and the pay in Clark county is considerably higher than other counties. But is the 20-30 years of misery worth it?

What is the best part of working at the company?
The patients and the providers are excellent with the time we have and complex patient load they do a great job

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Management and favoritism . They allow some employees to do whatever they want. Meanwhile everyone else has to pick up the pace 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Short staffed and overworked. Will not name names but primary care is a mess 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
24 patients tge MAs do all the scanning scheduling bloodwork telephone calls all while doing patient care. Front desk just does check in and gossips all day long

SNHD is a great place for people who just want to go to work and earn a paycheck.  If you are seeking to grow as a professional and want to join an innovative organization, you will have a hard time committing to a long-term career with this organization.    

The pay is great but there is little to no room for advancement.  Professional development is not embraced within this organization.  There is no reward for continuing education except for self-satisfaction.  The leadership and their leadership style are outdated as compared to cities with similar population size.  Finally, there is little to no collaboration between departments.  Everyone is in their own world.      

The pitch they provide is good about quality of quantity but they don't mean what they say. Throughout my occupation with them and mistakes I caught and lifes I help save, I was  let go without a  warning and all my computer access was cut off and I thought I had  computer problems and they just let me go without saying anything. Agency they hire through called me to inform me after many attempts of trying to access the system. They let me work 4 hours and then cut me off. They keep training so you are replaceable with the next. No security at anytime you can be let go without a notice of any kind. They demand higher out put with system crashes repeatedly.  

Established pursuant to Nevada Revised Statutes Chapter 439, the Southern Nevada Health District’s mission is to protect and promote the health, the environment, and the well-being of Southern Nevada residents and visitors. It is one of the largest local public health districts in the nation. It serves a population of over two million, representing 72.5% of the state’s population, and almost 40 million tourists annually, with a staff of approximately 500 employees working in four divisions. In furtherance of its mission, public health services are available to everyone, regardless of income.

Extremely difficult to promote even if you're a much better candidate for the position. High turnover rate due to hostile environment from management. Extremely difficult to start at a higher pay rate regardless of your education, training, and experience.  So much backstabbing to get to the top. Not everyone is treated fairly and equally. Horrible communication and management keeps you guessing of changes to come. So much favoritism which keeps them protected regardless of their wreckless work behavior. Promotions are rigged and modified for those individuals with less qualifications.

SNHD is a great starter job for those in public health . Unfortunately , it is extremely hard to move up. There’s very little room for advancement or even trainings/certifications to advance within. It all depends on the department . You can tell they have someone for the job prior to opening up with position for everyone. You can have all the qualifications for the position and sometimes won’t even advance to interview. I highly suggest taking personal time to complete trainings and certifications to be able to move up. 

I work as a Customer Service volunteer at the Southern Nevada Health District through the government sponsored AARP program. I have learned a lot and management treat me with respect. My last birthday was recognized and celebrated with the SNHD staff that I work with. Since I have worked there, we as volunteers have been celebrated with several luncheons to thank us for our service.

The new Exec level management at the Health District was more concerned with cutting the budget than with making sure the HD was well staffed and following laws and correct procedures. OSHA compliance was not a concern because they felt it did not apply to them. Middle level management was more concerned with making the upper level happy so they did nothing to ensure a positive work environment. All employees were soo worried they would be laid off that they couldn't even get their work done. This went on for over 8 months.

Inappropriate and unprofessional behavior is 
pretty much global, and practically encouraged.
 
If you don't ingratiate yourself to the right cliques quickly, and play the office politics game well, your days will be numbered.

Many staff have compassion fatigue, and it shows when they are interacting with clients.
