What is the best part of working at the company?
While no nursing job is perfect, SOMC is by far the best hospital I have worked for.  I worked there over for 20 years.  I left because I took a job making a lot more money, which at the time was just something I had to do to survive.  After I left I worked in several different hospitals.  This really made me realize what a great place SOMC is to work.  Most of the management and administration are people who started there working on the floor and have worked there for 30 or 40 years.  The hospital is very invested in the community.  If you want to climb the ladder it may not be the place for you.  Those jobs don’t come open often, and when they do they usually promote from within based on seniority.  No one ever leaves those management/admin positions.  If I could handle working the floor again I would probably go back there.  Anytime I talk to one of my old coworkers and they complain, I just tell them they should try working at another hospital for a while then come back and tell me if they still think it’s that bad.  Oh, and also, they don’t have travelers or agency nurses.  Nothing against travel nursing, that’s how I paid the bills for quite a while, but it does make a huge difference in the overall quality of care the patients receive.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Every nursing job is stressful and every hospital has staffing issues.  I’ve definitely seen a lot worse though

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environment is really great.  People are accepting and they are like a family.  It seems like everyone who works there is related to 10 other people who work there.

As an intern, I was responsible for helping to maintain a clean facility, assisting in the cardiopulmonary rehab department, and providing a helping hand for PEC (performance enhancement center). My tasks included the following: cleaning machines, taking blood pressure/RPE/oxygen saturation rates, running fitness activities for athletes, sweeping floors, folding towels, and working at the front desk. It was a little bit of everything. The co-workers were nice and easy to confront. I enjoyed socializing with the L.I.F.E. Center members as well as the cardiopulmonary patients. I never had a problems with any of the members I was helping to serve. However,  there were several spells of boredom as I interned at the facility. I would oftentimes find myself folding more towels than necessary since there was nothing left for me to do. This may also be due to the fact that two other interns were stationed at the same time as me. Our times were poorly planned and inconvenient more times than not.

Most of my learning was in the cardiopulmonary rehab department. This is where I gained essential skills, such as blood pressure readings, oxygen saturation readings, and rate of perceived exertion. I had to closely monitor patients and ensure their safety during workout sessions. It was an enlightening experience!

I interviewed there twice.  The first time was for a Telecommunications Specialist position.  I lost that job to someone with zero experience but went to church with the director of the department.  A tech position came open a few months later (disgruntled tech left; I did not have that information at the time of my acceptance).  After starting, I found out who had received the previous position and level of expertise.  I stayed there for 8.5 years for personal/family reasons (it was my home town); but was hoping to gain a position in mainstream telecommunications (preferably wireless) again. My fellow technician and I maintained a solid ethic toward customer service toward the various departments; but it was difficult many times due to interference from our department manager.  I finally tried to lodge a complaint with their human resources but that fell on deaf ears.  I finally could no longer tolerate the enormous ego and combative actions of our manager and, thankfully, landed another job.

SOMC can be a great place to work if you're fortunate to work with/for a good manager; however, it can also be an incredibly terrible place to work if your management is terrible.  AND, HR/SOMC ALWAYS favors management over the employee.  It is in no way employee-centric.

It in no way deserves any sort of rank as one of the "best places to work."

Management is poor. No one is held responsible for anything, even if the incident involves a patient. The problem is just swept under the rug. 
Gossip and petty matters take priority of patient care issues. My manager was very narcissistic and consistently put me down to make herself look and feel better. 
I will not mention the specific unit or my job title but it was often extremely busy and understaffed. There was no time for breaks but you were slapped on the wrist by the manager for not taking one because HR would tell her had to let us take breaks. Then she would sit in her office with the door shut while all the nurses were drowning out on the floor. 
It would be a great place to work if you want to do the bare minimum, work harder to get out of work, and run out the door leaving everyone else to finish the shift. That type of behavior is encouraged. If you have a good work ethic and go above and beyond, you will be cut down, put in your place, and told you're not good enough. You will be punished for thinking of this job as a career while other staff do their taxes and homework while on the clock.

Benefits, only three patients per nurse, more manager is nice 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
No nursing assistant so if you get a bed hopper or someone who has diarrhea you spend your day overwhelmed with charting, meds, doctors, families, AND diarrhea

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
*most* co-workers are helpful. Everyone tries to help with each others needed days off so we all have a flexible schedule 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Report, read charts, assess patients, meds, doctor communication, lunch, re-assessment, meds, charting, (and all the in betweens), report off

SOMC might be the only employer here in Portamouth BUT I wouldn't just apply because of being close to where you live. Trust me it might just me or the department but the Registration/Central Scheduling isn't a family it's people that will back stab you no matter what happens.  Not enough training and most if the people will talk to you but the moment you leave  they will talk bad behind your back.  And so does supervisor nothing is private!!!!

Job was to be 8h but often longer as it was task driven and employee must complete tasks prior to departure. 

Fast paced on call travel to 5 county area meeting pt and family needs. 

Learned to prioritize and triage pt needs;  Priority problem solving 

Management was top down. Responded to employee concerns to raise department evaluations, but catered to the majority and not the individual needs of staff members. 

Hardest part of the job was the long hours associated with doing admissions while also taking call and meeting pt needs. 

Most enjoyable: Good teamwork among employees to meet pt needs

A typical day for me working at Southern Ohio Medical Center as an Athletic Trainer consists of working in the Orthopedic office working with our providers to help with day-to-day operations. On days that I do not work in the Orthopedic office I cover a local high school and take care of athletes who may have injuries. As an athletic trainer we perform injury evaluations, rehabilitation, documentation, and education to athletes, parents, and coaches. The hardest part of my job was at the beginning when I first started it was hard getting used to things at first. As time went on it got better and easier for me. My manager is very easy to work with.

My job duties are many.  I interact with all physicians and other medical staff, as well as other areas of the hospital.  Case managememt, Performance improvement, Risk managemint, Quality control, all areas depend and rely on what I see in the chart and deem as a codable diagnosis. My job is very challenging and exciting at the same time.  I love what I do and I have learned a lot and wish to continue to learn and grow. I am grateful for all I have learned at the facility and I have been able to expand my nursing knowledge to a whole new area.

Many duties that physicians should be responsible for carrying out correctly are left to other staff members, such as filling out scripts or documenting without needing to copy and paste from others notes. The management is supportive and willing to work along side to help out and pick up the slack to make it easier.  I cannot say enough good about managers.  They have nothing to do with the compensation and become frustrated when they lose their talent due to low pay.
