Southwest has a nicely updated look especially in the E building, but the culture is uninviting. I’ve worked there for the past 4 years and have seen a major decline on most of the units. It is so bad that there are currently more than 30 nursing positions posted on their website! More nurses are about to put on their notices too. I’ve seen managers yell at staff members right at the front desk. The management really doesn’t care about employees. You are worked short constantly, sent home at 530 in the morning just to save a few dollars. Also, if you are lowed due to census, you’re expected to be called in at any time and have to be there in an hour. The insurance benefits are expensive even with the wellness screen and exclude autism/developmental disorders and infertility treatment. There are many cliques within the hospital and it continues up the ladder to management. Southwest does pay well including a $3.50 shift differential for nights and $4 more per hour for float pool. Tuition reimbursement isn’t accessible until you’ve worked more than a year and a half. There isn’t any sick time- if you call off 4 times in a calendar year you will be written up even with a doctors note. Even after four years of service, I still only accrue 6 hours of PAM (vacation time) per pay and as soon as you get lowed they take it to pay you. Managers are denying vacations because they are too short staffed. My advice is to look elsewhere.

My day is never as planned and it makes for stressful but challenging and exciting days. I've learned the the ED setting is unpredictable and the need to be completely prepared is a must. I lead a team of RN's, Medics, Secretaries and collaborate with MD's to help maintain a high level of quality and standard of care in the ED setting. I'm always challenged, being off site in a free standing ED, with equipment needs and maintaining communication with the main hospital / changes in processes getting to the free standing as well as being included in what will work for us.
The hardest part of my job is trying to continually maintain staffing, and ensuring everyone is upholding the highest standards possible, juggling many jobs within my job.
The most enjoyable part of my job is when I am able to keep up my skills and do hands on patient care as well as hearing from patients and families that the ED is an excellent place and delivers excellent care - that makes me proud of my team.

We have a culture that is patient-focused not just nursing-task focused. Our goal is to get the pre-surgical patient mentally and physically prepared for surgery to afford the very best patient outcome possible. Challenges include language barriers, and mental and physical handicaps among a host of others including serving a pre-surgical patient population that does not have their testing in our department.  Each day is different. I have come to expect the unexpected. Challenges in patient care are just a normal part of nursing. Sometimes the hardest part of the job for me is trying to teach over the phone but it can also be the most enjoyable as patient's really seem to appreciate it. I am always trying to find creative ways to get education to this patient population. I really enjoy what I do.

Very clicky place to work and to many bullies you can't go to work just to work you will hear about everything everyone has done wrong or how the staff can't stand someone. They will black ball you right out the door managment will not step into stop it. They hire people base on who they know in the lab department and if you receive a text or phone call wanting you to come to work and you say no the phlebotomy supervisor will take hours away from you and you will be lucky to get two days a weeks   good phlebotomist will leave within a month because they refuse to work in a zoo like  environment I know everyone needs a job but If you can stay away for this place you would be better off but if you get hired here you will see how clicky this place is you will see girls not want to do the work and will push everything off on everyone else and if you watch you will see them try and set up other phlebotomist to get them in to trouble I'm so thankful I got out when I did. Run just run

Management will break you.  They will conduct staffing study then manipulate time/ patient to say you’re within the limit when in fact they only lower the amount of time you get to spend with patient.  They will publicly post individual productivity but not manage the low producers, serving only to pit employee against employee.   They will constantly ask you to do more and more and more.  No support, no empowerment to do your job.  It’s a horribly stressful environment only made tolerable by coworkers who support each other, much like neglected children.  
They hand out children toys like google eyes, mirrors, and bendy toys as motivators but take away incentives like holiday gift card and reducing holiday meal to minimal.  
Management cares first about patient survey.  It’s their TOP priority, then to staff physicians who all operate under SWGH but operate as their own offices.

While the organization offers valuable experience, there are concerns regarding internal hiring practices and management consistency.
There appears to be a lack of transparency in how internal candidates are selected for advancement opportunities. Expectations communicated to employees are not always aligned with actual outcomes, which can lead to confusion and frustration. Opportunities for growth may be presented as available, but decisions can feel inconsistent or unclear.
Additionally, leadership decisions regarding scheduling and role assignments may not always appear equitable. In some cases, disciplinary actions and policy enforcement can feel inconsistently applied, raising concerns about fairness in the workplace.
Overall, the environment may benefit from improved communication, clearer expectations, and more consistent management practices to better support employee growth and trust.

I love my job, my co-workers, and the environment. I have a wealth of knowledge working with phenomenal therapists with specialties across the board.  Typically I treat 10 plus patients a day.  Management has been more than willing to work with my schedule with my family's adjusting needs. I enjoy seeing my patients build strength, balance, and overall confidence in their own abilities. The most difficult part of my job is feeling as though I can't help everyone!  Unfortunately with the struggling economy I am in need of more hours and raises which cannot be provided for me at this time. I hopefully will maintain my long term career with SWG but at this time need to increase my earnings.

Took advantage of my kindness and overworked me and worked me on more holidays than I needed to meet my quota

Learned a good bit when I did cardiothoracic training in CCE, as well as learned a lot about respiratory, cardiac and kidney management and care in PCU

Workplace culture is hit or miss, some of the older ones are negative nancys and will refuse to help and some of them are amazing at teaching. All depends on the people on the unit

What is the best part of working at the company?
Equipment is up to date and easy to use and maintain. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The feeling that you are at the bottom of the heap and at the whim of the OR staff. I felt like nothing more than an errand boy or slave for the OR. No respect at all.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
2nd shift is definitely a clique of right wing people. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Surgeries are usually wrapped up by at least 10pm.

It started off good until you can’t work premium shifts every premium(extra 15 during the week and 25 on the weekend) you get low basically you don’t get to work. Recently they cancelled premium you get time and half plus $5.00 which is less than what you were making before.They let you work your regular shifts then the moment you get premium all of sudden they don’t need anyone oddly enough. People have left due to this. As a college student who may have to go PRN like me I would say find a different hospital southwest is not the place currently.  I also think that there is some slight favoritism in staffing from conversations I’ve had with other aides
