Special Olympics

At the office of The Special Olympics World Winter Games, in Nagano Japan, there was no such thing as a “typical day at work.” Each day brought new challenges to the workplace. I learned how to manage a team of employees, how to assign duties to the person most capable and when to take charge or repair a situation that was getting out of control.
I lead a team of translators who worked with International Representatives from over one-hundred countries. We would guide and assist the Representatives in most every aspect of their visit to Japan. Some of the duties that I took upon myself included creating instruction manuals for Japanese cell phones. There were two types of cell phone being used and the manuals I created allowed English speaking users to setup and use the Japanese cell phones right out of the box.
The hardest part of the job was keeping track of all employees at all times. We were often so spread out through the city of Nagano that it was a challenge to constantly account for each person. Luckily my sharp organizational skills helped to solve this problem. The part about the job that I enjoyed the most was getting the chance to work with some of the athletes who had traveled half-way around the world to compete in the games.
The work I performed was unsupervised but the managers I worked with were fantastic. It was great to have volunteered with the Special Olympics and I would gladly do it again!

Literally the best time of my life, I made friends and helped the team win many gold and silver medals. There were two coaches and me as an Assistant coach due to my accelerated learning of the sport and how to best modify for speed and accuracy. I had learned that friends come in all shapes and sizes and to always stay safe in unfamiliar places. The best workplace culture for volunteering.

 The hardest part of this job was the uncontrollable seizures that would happen and being alert all the time for unsafe situations that can occur at any moment with anything or anyone.  

The most enjoyable part was watching your team win the medals and watch each year as their achievements grow as does their abilities and learning styles.

It was a school program that I enjoyed very much! I loved connecting with the children we coached, I even see them sometimes when I am on the train! You could literally see the improvement and work that you've diligently put into someone's skills and it is amazing to watch! If you are looking for good people to be around and for a fun activity to do this is it! I couldn't have loved a program so much more! It was fun, competitive, and a breath of fresh air. If I could i'd do this experience all over again! We even did a campaign in our school about "Ending the R word" where the students would sign the poster and win a special shirt through a draw. We gave out wristbands and had our own Instagram cut out for students who wanted to take pictures. These were the best days of my life!

What is the best part of working at the company?
The athletes are most definitely THE BEST PART….but being surrounded by likeminded people that love this organization as much (or more) than you do makes it seem less like “work” & more like “congregating  with friends who want to make a positive difference with the same goals.” 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Falling short of desired outcome or letting down athletes that sometimes have nothing other than special Olympics to look forward to

Upbeat & fun that embraces creativity & out of the box thinking to make things happen.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Fast, fun, sometimes requiring team work & other times completely independent but always coming back to the same common goal.

Being a Special Olympics coach is a profoundly rewarding role that requires dedication, patience, and a deep sense of empathy. Everyone around me has these qualities! The Regional and Athletic Directors are very helpful in guiding us coaches on everything we need to be successful. They also trained us at the start of the job as well as throughout the year on coaching skills, health & safety, etc. This has been one of the most rewarding positions I have ever had. Being a Special Olympics coach is about more than just sports; it’s about making a lasting impact on the lives of the athletes by promoting physical health, emotional well-being, and social inclusion. I am thrilled to be part of this organization!

Love to volunteer for The Special Olympics in the Bowling Conference for Southern California. My duties were to assist the Athletes on when to go up and became as a Bowling Coordinator Volunteer. Made sure the Athletes were aware with bowling policies and giving them a lot of encouragement. The most enjoyable part on volunteering is the smiles, heart, athlete they are to have wonderful talents and lastly the family, friends, coaches, staff, and everyone who volunteers to give this wonderful Athletes encourgement and a good deed. I have been volunteering for The Special Olympics along time. It is in my heart and duty to help volunteer for my whole life.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The kids/ participants - I love finding funding opportunities that will benefit them . I Love their tenacity and determination 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Dealing with the board. They're very disjointed, can across very selfish, if it's not something that helps them or some kind of personal thing for them I've had difficulty with them cooperating

They really push you because they want to receive funds

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I've written a few projects for them and it's difficult to get the administration to sit down and give their subject matter expertise. But if I'm working alone I'm fine

I really enjoyed my time at Special Olympics International.. My role was to help facilitate the consolidation of three floors into two at their downtown Washington, DC location.  The work environment was welcoming and pleasant; the entire facilities team was great. My boss was helpful and encouraging. I learned a lot about office furniture assembly and dis-assembly; proper stacking and storage techniques and taking a task from beginning to completion.
The most enjoyable part of my job was the working environment.

In Special Olympics he was a trainer for disabled athletes. We trained different sports at the Olympic level. We achieved many successes in the different Olympic games of Special Olympics. I was able to be the Director of the IOE inclusion program. In this program we train midle and high school students with a specialized curriculum to respect athletes, participate in sports activities and volunteer for the Special Olympics organization. The experience helped me to grow professionally.

I volunteered to take care of a special needs person and took them around to different centers where they could enjoy themselves. I learned how to be around a special needs person and how to cater to their needs. The management was really nice and helpful when I needed anything. They explained things well and were helpful. The work was fast but fun. The hardest part was making sure that the person under my care had everything thing they needed and figuring out what they wanted to do. The most enjoyable part was getting to help the people there.
