Specialty Foods Group LLC.

Unfortunately Specialty Foods Group lost their largest contract, Nathan's Famous Hot Dogs.   As a result of this contract loss the company closed the Specialty Foods Group location in Chicago, Il where I have been employed for the past 25 years. 
A typical day was to come in run reports for our V.P., then review the short coded product list, since we were a food industry manufacturer we had product that would need to be donated when the code date was to low to ship to customers.  Next read and answer e-mails.  I had our IT Department set up a special e-mail address for Accounts Payable.  I printed all invoices for A/P.  Next step in my day was to match all receiving tickets to purchase orders and enter the information into our computer system.  Answer phones when needed. Assist the Vice President throughout the day.  
I learned many things while employed at SFG, Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, Purchasing, Export Manager, Customer Service and Administrative Asst.  I loved working in A/R and being an Administrative Asst.
The management was a great team, they were very involved and always helpful.  Our upper management had an open door policy.  It was great working with them.
My co-workers worked well as a team, this really shows as most of the immediate office had at least 15 years seniority.  
The hardest part of the job was making sure all deadlines were met on time.
The most enjoyable part of my job was working with the Vice President.  I work on many projects including a fire project.  We had an engine room fire in the plant and I worked directly with the insurance company with all the fire expenses.  Working with him was  interesting because it was always different.

The day starts off by going to my office and checking on things I have to do for the day whether it be in the computer but basically just getting the guys lined out for the day getting them what they need to achieve there day then I would move on to the next issue dealing with vendors all day so basically on the phone constantly answering phone calls calling vendors making sure they get paid and have the proper things to complete there services  I would be going all day  I'd say the hardest part of my job wasalways trying to make people happy all the time couldn't ever seem to please them always something now how ever the most enjoyable part of my job was making people happy giving them a raise whenever they deserved one  I found that very enjoyable just to let them know I'm human to we all have to work together  I would never ask no one to do anything that I c ouldnt or wouldn't fo my self showing them that the boss is willing to work just as hard as them it takes all of us to get a task done but most times I would find myself working alone so that wasn't very cool it would make it hard when your working with alot of unskilled labor so I was always trying to work with them so they could learn skills it was all about setting yourself up for the next day so get things ready so we can make our jobs come tomorrow alot easier on our self's  so it was basically like being an over paid babysitter  but all in all it worked out you know I s pent a total of 30 years of my life always being in charge of some kind of people just being a leader being the guy that stepped up and made sure all the rules were followed and teaching along the way

-In a typical day, I repair any problems that may arise with machinery on my floor. When there are no problems, I periodically check on the production floor to see if everything is running properly. I work on jobs that are assigned to me by my supervisor. At the end of the day, I dismantle the machinery for cleaning and make any change overs for start up on the following day.
-I gained some mechanical knowledge.
-Management is pretty fair in treatment of all employees.
-I enjoy working with my co-workers. They are friendly. 
-The hardest part of the job is when we are struggling to find the fault that caused the machinery to stop running and we are losing production time as a result.
-The most enjoyable part of the job is getting a machine back running and seeing the final product getting shipped away.

I worked the 3rd shift in the production area for several years. I performed in a team environment, meeting daily deadlines, review quality of product and writing reports for the work done. I filled the ovens and cooked product making sure the product was processed according to required specs. I reported at the end of the day with my immediate supervisor, outlining work progress and identifying possible issues. The most difficult aspect of the job is making sure requirements for cooking are exactly up to government standards. 
The most enjoyable part of the job was making use of observational skills and paying close attention to details.

I was a smokehouse operator. Loved the work, kept me in shape, was very good at my job, enjoyed my coworkers. Tough and hot work, but if you’re built for it, you will be fine. As far as the company as a whole, it’s a decent place to work. HR are nice people as well as upper management. Supervisors are terrible, though. The people that work in the freezers gossip as much as high schoolers, everybody clicks up and talks behind everyone’s back. My advice would be, work hard, make your money and go home. Don’t try to make friends with anybody and don’t tell anyone your business or it will come to haunt you later on. 

If you have your life and friends this the job for you. Plenty of opportunities to be bored with repetitious meaningless thankless work.  After your shift starts to change in workload you,'ll know the reason for it? And those who are considered  an operator or long time associate get preference Al treatment. As those preferred employees dissapdR for a while it is you who will be taking up their work to do.  a ND if you want to advance to a different job in this place you will most likely have to guess if and when something will open up for you unless you were chosen. Plenty of gossip and maintenance issues. if you want to ruin yourife, hate your personal freedom and want toive F work this job is waiting for you.

Specialty Food Group is the worst job I've ever worked at. Everything is unplanned, unorganized, and law breaking. The owner of the factory who is a billionaire refuses to money to resolve the problems of the workplace like the machines, or help afford air conditioning. It gets really hot during the summer time all we have are fans in each line which doesn't help. Some of my co workers either almost passed our or quit due to the heat exhaustion. They don't listen to what we have to say when there's a problem all they care about is running not safety. They lied and said we would get raises and hired in that hasn't happened.

Working here is really job dependant. What you do out of all your options will either be great, or terrible. When you get hired you can go up to HR and check the bid list, and pick any open position you want. I did and started making 19.75/hr my second day (base 18.50). I went to raw ham, great supervisors, coworkers range from okay to terrible, my job is a lot of work and stressful, but its worth it. If you like working on a line all day the stuffing room in raw ham is an easy pick, if you like walking be a jack driver, etc. Really can pick almost any position you want, especially after you wait a while and see more jobs come open.

Unfortunately, my time with this company wasn't pleasant.   I was hurt during my employment due to being improperly trained.

Management was very inconsistent with their policies

Unorganized and fueled by drugs in my opinion

Unorganized and unclear.  Supervisors often had no answers for safety issues

You stay busy at this job so time goes quickly. Easy work if you can lift up to 50lbs. Loading trucks, handling raw meat, quality is must here, learned better work ethic and to respect workers. The work culture is very diverse and the are friendly to any race, gender. Hardest thing I did there was learn to back up a box truck to the docks. But after I got the hang of it, it was easy! I loved the pay and the hours, the employees are nice and straightforward. They will offer advice if needed.
