Every other aspect of the healthcare industry has learned how to staff appropriately, and allow their employees the possibility of begin sick, having a car break down, or any of the innumerable possibilities that may result in someone missing a day of work. With SpecialtyCare, there is no understanding from management whatsoever that their employees are human beings. There has been a mass exodus of employees from the east cost teams in recent months due to a complete lack of empathy from management in regards to staffing, long hours worked, and progressively draconian paid time off policies. Getting paid time off approved is a near impossibility due to the staffing crisis. 

The compensation for this company is technically "competitive", but at the very lowest possible end of that competitive range. The popular tactic for many clinicians is to leave the company and move to a different one, as Specialty Care's philosophy is to pay every worker as little as they will accept. The ranges of salaries across company clinicians is absurd, justified only by the fact that no one can share salary information.

All of these issues could be justified if management was receptive to employee concerns and listened to them, as well as making attempts to make incremental changes that result in a better company culture and experience for all. However, the reaction of many managers and regional managers has been to gaslight and deny the real grievances that employees bring to them. Specialty Care often boasts that they are a "data driven company", but internally that data is used as a cudgel to invalidate the experiences of employees who feel overworked, underappreciated, and used as mere chess pieces for managers who's only concern is increasing monitored case numbers at the expense of their employees work life balance and sanity.

No company is perfect, and no job is either. If this company made efforts to continuously improve the experience of it's employees, I would be giving it five stars. There are any number of ways this could be done- confirming procedures a week or two ahead of schedule, hiring multiple people to ensure everyone gets to take paid time off when they need to, or have a sick day when necessary, and limiting travel outside of the employees region to a minimum, for starters.

Sadly, Specialty Care is a reactive, conservative company who will only correct problems when it cuts into their profit margins. Until then, they will continue bullying and leaning on their overworked employees as much as humanly possible to make ends meet and keep the company afloat. It's a genuine shame to see a company like this, that before the pandemic seemed well run, begin to unravel at the seams when it's employees simply ask for better working conditions.

Be careful and understand exactly what you're about to commit to for two years. This position will have you sign a two-year commitment document, where you can't decrease from full-time employment until after 2 years in the position or else you'll have to pay about $2500, so choose wisely.

The healthcare experience was great. If you're looking for direct patient care hours, this is the place to do it. You will get about 3 months of training to learn over 10 different services. It's a lot to learn thus a steep learning curve with expectation to figure out varying situations. The hours aren't honest longterm. While the flexibility was great, you will be expected during short-staffed periods of time to work a lot more call, 16-hour overnight shifts, and 24 hour weekend shifts to cover for the lack of senior technicians. 

If you're a hard worker, you will get dumped on more but still not rewarded, and you'll have to clean up after other's mistakes and slack. The company itself wasn't transparent during 2021 and continues to make decisions without the input of those who actually do the job. I loved the work itself and wouldn't trade the experience for anything but I left because I felt overworked leading to burnout, disrespected and undervalued by the company. 

Know your worth and be ready to stick up for it.

Pay is average at best, considering how much you will work.  Work life balance is horrible.  The company does not care about you or your life.  If you have a family, they don't care about your time with your family either.  

They have taken away much of the incentive pay causing demorialization and staff to acually leave.  They often want clinicians to work very long hours and they are ALWAYS short staffed. 

Then there is the travel.  They are always looking for people to travel.  Much less re-imbursment for travel than before.  

The company cares about new accounts with no staff to manage the new cases.  They will work you untill you are burnt out.  There are some really great staff working there, even managers.  But they get chewed up in the grind eventually.

They have a generous PTO plan but it can be difficult to take it at times, especially during holidays because only a couple people can be off at the same time. 

Bottom line: You are always avaiable to them.  Even if you are not on call you may end up staying to do a late case.  Of they will be texting and calling you late at night.  Get a day off the schedule and youhave traveled like crazy and worked tons of hours?  Doesn't matter - they will call you - we have an add on.

This is a dying field - ever since CMS cut re-imbursments.  There is a downward push that will continue and that translates to lower pay for clinitians, and more hours.  Gone are the days of glory...

The only people that will keep you sane in here is your co working but aside from that everything is horrible...from getting a surprise visit from your manager hours after she leaves...most of the people main concern is what time are they going home and sadly when working people in there kinda feel each other to see whose gonna work in certain areas and whose not...there is no balance between work and job..long story short you're not gonna have a life...flexible schedule sounds good right....no..it's more like you're not gonna know you're schedule the day before you work...if you have an appointment...you have to let them know weeks prior...getting promoted is easy..you just have to be in their level..which is pretty low ..always have to suck up if you want your 2% raise...overtime...don't even think about it....in a week you 40 hours or less but if they think you're gonna have overtime..they will send you home early but if you did have overtime...the management will be in you're behind all day...benefits are somewhat good...had united healthcare for insurance...eye med for vision delta for dental...it never gets bored in There due to the fact that in different areas..you do different job....if you work in here...you'll see what I said...if not there are a lot of job out there to choose from

the case pay bonus on the weekend was nice

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
literally everything. upper management did not care about any issues, whether it was constant canceling/adding of cases with no warning and no penalty to the hospital to having zero help when needed and being spread so thin you're practically transparent. never knowing how long you're going to be working or even if you'll be working or what you'll be doing on any given day. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
work environment was fine because that's not actually at an SC facility, the teams at the hospital were great. The culture at SC though was very stepford and say one thing and do another. Everything was in the name of "patient care" even when they were burning techs out left and right. Can't provide quality patient care when you're constantly exhausted. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
if you had a first start case it was pretty okay unless you got bumped by an emergency, otherwise don't get too comfortable doing anything because at any moment anything could change and you'd have to run in to cover something. Your time is never your own. Which I guess in fairness is how it is for every IONM company, but most have more staff to help ease the load.

As others have stated, just a company gobbling up other smaller ones then pretending to be qualified to take on those responsibilities. Under staffed, over worked, grossly underpaid. But, since they are the only game in town, if you want to work you succumb to their insulting $13.00/hr starting pay for a skilled position. Tantamount to extortion. They cross the line in attempting to acquire more contracts using shady tactics, often infringing and threatening union protected positions with little regard to rules and regulations all while knowingly not having either the staffing or support to maintain said contracts. They undercut the current cost of providing a service to non-contracted hospitals in order to gain their business, in effect straining relationships hospitals have with their existing employees. It doesn't matter to them as long as they hustle the business/contract. This company contributes to what is currently wrong with our healthcare system. Driven by the dollar at the expense of talent, loyalty and good people. I feel for the current employees and ex-coworkers stuck there. Great guys. Shameful company. You get what you pay for.

Perform contract autotransfusion services for scheduled and emergent surgical cases (24/7) at 8 different area hospitals
No scheduled breaks or lunches as there is no one to provide relief
Case start time and length is only an estimated, therefore work schedules are estimated

Corporate office is trying to promote a positive atmosphere although techs often feel isolated as they work in many hospitals and most often without other associates from SpecialtyCare in house

Typical day would be pre-operative preparation in the operating room department of the hospital.
Troubleshoot any technical difficulties that arise before, during, and after each procedure.
Inspect, clean and process instrumentation and video equipment.
Daily documentation of completed work. 
Interact extensively with hospital personnel in order to insure positive outcome. 
Study quality indicators with respect to improving or expanding services.
Learned much about the health care industry in many of its facets.
Also learned to adapt to different environments and also to very fluid work days.
Management was very effective and as a manager myself learned to function successfully with fellow employees from vastly different backgrounds. 
Workplace culture while varying from day to day was overall positive.
Most difficult aspect of job was trying to integrate multiple personalities to function as one unit.
Most enjoyable part of the job the was positive interaction with fellow employees and hospital personnel.

A typical day is working cases and cleaning instrumentation.
I learned how to use different types of laparoscopic medical equipment and video systems.  I also learned some anatomy of the human body.
Management I thought is a weak link in the company.  I felt they did not identify with their employees.  I also felt like the company was top heavy when it came to salaries.  I understand that the people in the corporate office make more than the workers in the accounts but I also think that their wages could have been a little more competitive with the rest of the market. 
With the turnover rate as high as it is with this company it was difficult to establish long term relationships with co-workers but the ones I did have were good working relationships.  We worked hard everyday.  The hardest part of this job was the weak management, low pay and turnover rate.  The most enjoyable part of this job was working in the medical field and being a part of the surgery team.

This company truly lived up to its very poor reputation.  You can have zero expectation of ever leaving work when call time starts (and you’re NOT on call).   Don’t expect to have any evening activities because you’ll never know when your day will end.  Tough luck if your case gets bumped back and your kid has practice, a recital, a game, or tutoring that evening.  Unless your spouse can race between activities, you are out of luck!  Going out to celebrate your parents 30th anniversary?  Then plan to call-in sick because it’ll take an act of God to get the day off.  And it won’t matter if your day started at 6:30am. They will leave you in the OR without a break until 10pm and then schedule you for a first start case the following day. 

Specialty Care is all about the bottom line, but they will pretend it’s a patient-centric environment.  How can clinicians who are working 15+ hour days be able to provide top notch, quality care?
