Spring Valley Hospital Medical Center

As a new grad RN, I started working with SVH and completed the new grad residency program. Stayed for the 2 year contract and will never go back to a VHS hospital. We would constantly be short staffed with unsafe assignments and would continue to be forced to admit patients. We would have beds in the halls and in the lobbies. At times they would send a nurse home if the census was low in the beginning of shift, then admit so many patients that charge nurses and nurses would take on 7-8 med surg patients.  Some charge nurses have a year or less of work experience! We would constantly ask for more nurses and help but were never helped. It was sad and took an enormous toll on my mental health and the mental health of ALL of the nurses that worked there. Ask anyone at SVH about how they feel about their job and they will tell you they hate it. The ONLY positive things I can say is it threw me into an environment where I had to learn fast and I mastered my skills. Also the other nurses and CNAs were amazing! The culture of the unit between staff was nice. Don’t think you’ll get anywhere with management! Every day I wasn’t at work I’d be worrying about what kind of unsafe assignment I’d get when I come back. No work/life balance whatsoever. Also having to be on call at least once a month wasn’t in the new grad contract but they threw that on us too! Leaving has been the best decision of my life! 

Spring Valley has been a good company,personally speaking. Of course you will encounter flaws within any company,it's how you learn to navigate through them for yourself and speaking up with your management. I can say personally where I've had issues and once brought to my managers attention she has taken proper action to do the best she could to either accommodate or bring up any matters to all her staff on the unit as a team. Some of the work load is a bit heavy given it's a hospital,and when floated and unaware of how that department is ran can be challenging. I honestly feel ER training should be provided to all staff that are not originally of that department when being floated, because it can present itself to be extremely overwhelming and exhausting,and frustrating if you don't know your way around the unit. The hospital itself is diveresed and everyone thus far I see treats others equally,they give a welcoming energy. 

This place is horrible. I started in med surg and was actually trained pretty well with good team work and support but then I decided to move to ICU which was a mistake. This ICU is a generalized ICU so we get everything, too much actually. While precepting I got mostly heart patients because my preceptor was primarily a heart nurse and then when I was by myself I was thrown into the world of Neuro with hardly any experience or training. There’s no good thorough training and you’ll have a minimum of 8 preceptors rotating you like a used tissue; all of which micromanage you and contradict your last preceptor the shift before. 

This ICU has also been unable to keep a manager and a director for over 5 years so essentially people just do whatever. There’s favoritism, inadequate staff, charge nurses that don’t lift a finger when the whole unit is tripled but will only make coffee and socialize, unfair floating/ favorites getting 1:1’s, older OG nurses that eat their young. 
Staffing is horrible, it’s a rotating door with staff because of above.
Patient care is reactive not proactive. Many things do not get done until the patient codes and then it’s too late. 

Typical day at work would be busy but in a gratifying way. Every employee goal would be to maintain safety and meet the needs of the patient, family, & all staff including MD's. The environment was very supportive & staff worked well together aiding growth & professional development. Management was also very supportive & encouraged new learning & skill development. New advances were always sought to help nurses give the best of care & work well together. The hardest part of my job was wishing I had more time to spend with my patients & families especially when their was so much more I felt I could do if their were more time in my shift. The most enjoyable part of the job was seeing the smiles on the face of families as their loved one got better & they began to see progress. The joy of seeing someone really ill progress to going home is very gratifying & rewarding

Worked at Spring Valley Medical Center for 10 years, I've grown and developed expertise on the field I'm in.  I've floated on different areas like Emergency Department Hold Area, Behavioral unit, Orthopedic Floor, Observation Unit, and find this place as a great place to work. We also work with Nursing students from UNLV, Nevada State, Roseman School of Nursing, Arizona School of Nursing and Chamberlain School of Nursing.  Stressful but staff worked as a team. Had 2 great Managers from the past that worked hard and did their very best to managed our unit and had great working relationship with all the staff, we were very happy and content under their managements, too bad they both have to leave, so for now we have new department leaders at Medical Surgical Unit , Nursing Director and Nurse Manager. Hoping for safety, better and more patient satisfaction.

Spring Valley Hospital is a great facility to work at. They are part of the valley health systems which include 5 medical centers that serve the Las Vegas community. I have been employed by Spring Valley for the past 3 years both as a sterile processing technician and currently as a surgical technologist. Every staff member of the hospital are all orientated towards the same goals which include patient care of the highest standards and to make their facility the hospital of choice for their community. For me the most enjoyable part of the day is going to work knowing that I am apart of a team that is able to help transform and save lives while working with my friends. Spring Valley would definitely be mine and my family's hospital of choice for quality care.

I loved working at SVH as an RN until covid hit. We were well staffed. Coworkers were helpful and friendly. There was unity and teamwork. I always felt supported by management. But now, and I'm sure its the same story at every hospital. We are always short staffed on every floor because so many nurses have quit (ptsd probably?) Management gives incentive pay of $500 plus time and half to pick up a 4th shift but everyone is so burned out from the circus that covid has created that no one wants to work extra. Nurses are often floated to staff other units. They try to stay within patient ratios but don't be surprised if you get an extra patient. Lots of new grads at this hospital. I'm sure it will get better as more staff is hired. I'm trying to stick it out cause I used to love it here. Benefits are pretty standard per industry average

The interim manager (because there is no real manager) in the ICU makes decisions based on favoritism and lack competency. It is very stressful to work for people who are struggling to figure out what is it that is required of them to do in the managerial role. One day the rules are like this, the next day the rules change, then the day after the rules change yet again. It is a complete chaos and to make themselves feel like they are doing something they keep writing people up. The turnover here is unbelievable, people come and leave when they see the anarchy that is in the icu. If you have a concern or a request, your voice will never be heard. If you figure out how to be they favorite, they will let you get away with a lot. RNs, look for a job elsewhere or wait till they hire a real manager.

Usually very busy nights, but staff worked together to get the job done.
My high risk skills were enhanced.
Management was amazing, they were always behind you, they were visible on the unit and throughout the hospital, they were always doing things for us.
I loved my co-workers, we were a team, we worked together.
Hardest part of the job was when we had bad outcomes.
The entire atmosphere was enjoyable, the building was beautiful, the rooms were large and beautiful and having nice new equipment that was kept in good working condition was a plus.

Unfortunately, even though a new management took over the hospital, this place is still a mess. I would have to agree with what others are saying that to management you’re just a number. They even got rid of the on call pay just because they needed more money going into their pockets. They keep hiring nurses in the ICU with VERY little to NO experience and expect them to work with critical and high acuity patients! They don’t even take into account how unsafe that would be for the patient! The director doesn’t even do a thing nor lift a finger to address issues in the unit or with the staff. The low morale at this workplace is a result of how the management treats the staff.
