St. Marks Hospital

When I first get to work, I stock my rooms and IV trays to get prepared for whatever may come through those doors and into my rooms. I do a team huddle with my hall partners, 1 nurse and 1 tech, we do a quick run down about when to ask for help and communicating what you need. Our managers like to check on us through out the shift to see if we need any help. Co-workers are always offering help when they aren't busy. The hardest part of my job is when i'm exhausted from going patient to patient and some are needy or some are rude and trying to keep a smile on my face and do whatever I can to make their visit as comfortable as possible. The most enjoyable part of my job is seeing that I made a difference in someone day or their life. Working on a code and to see that the patient survived is a fulfilling experience.

Most of the Leadership here absolutely do not care about the patient, starting with Admin.  Much of this  team doubled in the movie Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and no they were not the humans doing the acting in the movie, and yes they have calluses on their knuckles.    

Overall staff are very unhappy here, just ask the nurses working here, they will tell you the same thing. 

If you are a nurse or a CNA do not make your next move to this Hospital, read the previous post of the unhappy nurse working here, correct RN protocols are not followed through due to being grossly understaffed and overworked,  and corners are frequently cut.   Another fellow RN member was terminated and she still does not completely understand why, she swears because she was a long term highly paid RN.    Support staff also very overworked and under appreciated.

I worked at St. Mark's for almost two decades in radiology. It is my opinion that their CEO doesn't give a darn about patients, staff, patient outcome, or employee turnover, only the profit margin.  The director of radiology was really a piece of work. He threatened my job and my hours about my serving my time with the National Guard and/or reserves.  It was after one of these disagreements (and having worked there for 15 years already) that he made me cover my tattoo on my left forearm in what I call a childish act to shows whose in charge.  

I loved working at St. Mark's, and I had a lot of friends who either work there now or have previously worked there.  Most have moved on.

I would like to know how many doctors of bailed out of St. Mark's also.

I've worked for this hospital for about 3 years. I have learned quite a bit about how to deal with difficult sticks and working with physicians and RN's. However, the culture of St Mark's is not that appealing. Co-workers are quick to stab you in the back without blinking an eye and then turn around and pretend like you're besties for the weekend. Management is ok. They at least give you the impression that they're working on suggestions and problems, but they basically are just going through the motion to get through the day and nothing really changes.
Working at St Mark's will help new phleb's learn their skills and improve on their bedside manner, but definitely not a place you'd want to make a career.

When I would arrive at the hospital to teach a class, the room was almost always ready to go (furniture in the proper place, etc.). The hardest part of this job was when the furniture wasn't arranged appropriately, and I would have to scramble to move everything around. I certainly felt that I could go to my manager at any time and for any reason and she would listen and usually give great feedback. 

When I worked in Labor & Delivery, the other nurses were great and we really worked well as a team. There was always someone available to help you when the need arose. Most (but not all) of the OB/GYN's were easy to work with and had a lot of trust and respect for the nurses. It was a great environment to work in!

Excellent patient care from bedside nurses.  Sometimes short staffed, but working together the nurses and direct patient care employees made all patients safe, comfortable and patients overall gave good reviews when calling the day after surgery to evaluate their experience at st. Marks outpatient surgery  center.   Most enjoyable part of job was interaction with coworkers, direct patient care and interviewing patients on phone to obtain their medical history and do a nursing assessment based on that information that we obtained. Typically worked monday-friday 8:30am--5:00pm, also had all major holidays off,  sometimes did not get a lunch break until late afternoon.

Most of the new Administrators (many old ones left due to cut throat measures and intense scrutinizing running rampant) are horrible.  The new HR Director is garbage and is the staunch CEO's little puppet, the new Assist. Administrator that is over support service's another complete joke and is another puppet master of the CEO.    If you are wanting to practice at a facility where you have great equipment, and an Administration that is willing to spend money for proper staffing, run as fast as you can away from this Facility.    The place is all about making the HCA corporate office shine by bringing in the big bucks.  Focusing on patient care is completely a thing of the past at this facility!

Looked at schedule, worked walk in patients and/or covered the hospitals or both at times.  Good co workers.  We had meetings every Friday with an excellent Dr. who would teach us and take questions about how the lab was being run and how things were going and about ICAEL.  Went to surgery, Cath lab, ER and three hospitals for echo coverage. Did echo and vascular studies at two locations.  I enjoyed my job and still do!!

What is the best part of working at the company?
Most the nurses and CNAs are very helpful and want to help you help patients. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
There was a 17:1 patient ratio for aides on a critical floor which made it impossible to take care of patient safely 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
management seems to not care about the needs of aides and most nurses have a seniority look on things and refuse to help answer call lights for their patients when there’s multiple going off

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Running around trying to answer call lights and begging other staff to help with patients who need more than one person in the room.

A typical day for me at St Mark's is seeing all my co-workers eagerly working and helping, with a smile.  I have learned that people have feelings, and when that are sick, they trust the hosptal staff to make them better.  Trust.  My co-workers are people i love working with and glad we are on the same team.  The hardest part of my job is getting attached to some of our older patients and then they expire.  It's hard to see the families go throught a loss of a loved one.  The most enjoybable part of being an employee of  HCA/St Mark's is we make a difference, in our community and in people lives.
