One of the things I enjoy most about St. Vincent Health is there is no such thing as a typical day.  My job involves a great deal of variety and I enjoy that.  As Facility Coordinator I am involved with many different types of situations including helping employees with various building issues, meeting new hires, and maintaining our Real Estate database.  One day I might be planning an event and the next day I might be in a meeting concerning building security.  

I have learned more at St. Vincent Health than in any other job I've had.  I've learned about Property Management, Badging/Security, Leasing, Utilities, Building Maintenance and Occupancy and many other things.  I am very lucky because I have amazing co-workers teaching me new things all the time.  They have been more than supportive and extremely willing to share their knowledge with me.  

I would say the hardest part of this job has been not having a clear definition of my role.  In a sense, I created my own space here at St. Vincent Health, even helping to come up with my own title.  I started taking on things for my Real Estate co-workers that they didn't have time to do because their workload was very heavy.  I took the initiative to take on as much responsiblity as possible to ensure that the day to day operations ran smoothly and that my co-workers knew they could count on me for anything.  

The most enjoyable part of my job is being hands on assisting with Property Management and being of service to all of the employees in our building.  Knowing that people rely on me is a great feeling.  People here at St. Vincent Health know they can depend on me for whatever they need anytime of day.  That has been incredibly rewarding during my time here.

St. Vincent Medical Group is a faith based medical company that offers many career opportunities.  The managers are very supportive and eager to help the employees when needed.  The doctors and nurse practitioners are willing to help nurses and medical assistance when needed as well.  A typical day starts with reviewing the appointment schedule to become prepared for the day.  Preparing for the day includes gathering supplies that may be needed, reviewing vaccinations that will be required for any well child checks, gathering information on the patients and going over the schedule with the doctor.  Throughout the day, the routine consists of rooming patients, obtain their vitals and medical history, relaying the reason for the office visit to the doctor, assisting with any treatments, and administering various medications/vaccinations.  Triage phone calls, communicating verbal orders to pharmacies and home health agencies, and obtaining prior authorizations from insurance companies are some of the many tasks throughout the work day. I have learned about vaccination requirements from the CDC and how to order from the state funded program.  I really enjoy the environment in which I work, my co-workers are great at working together to get the tasks at hand completed.  I especially enjoy being able to help the patients succeed in healing or improving their health.

A typical day at work includes building new charges, researching procedures / supplies to make sure they are being charged / coded compliantly, audit accounts to make sure the the departments are charging and documenting correctly.

I have been with St Vincent for almost five years and still learn something new every day.  For example, today I learned that we are able to import patient charges to a charge sheet template on the companies Intranet which will in turn automatically post to a patient's account

I absolutely adore my manager.  She is one of the most thoughtful, caring, and giving people I have ever met.  

I think the hardest part of my job is lack of training.  I was never trained for my position but expectations are that I know my job.  Fortunately for me, I've been in the healthcare industry for many years and all of my previous health related jobs have help greatly.  I am also a very quick learner and will ask questions until I understand how something works.  I also believe in taking detailed notes so that after my questions are asked I do not have to ask the questions again.

The most enjoyable part of my job are the people I work with.  My background is coding, auditing, charging, building charges, and education in cardiology, electrophysiology, peripheral vascular, and cardiovascular surgery.  I love training my departments on new procedures and I love learning new technologies.

The primary care center has really poor management. They have no type of organizational skills whatsoever. Nothing is ever communicated. Every week new tasks are added to your work load but don’t want to compensate for the amount of work. They tell you how to do your job but they themselves don’t have a clue on how to run the front desk. There is so much gossip and favoritisms which are mainly people that pick and choose what they want to do so the rest of the staff gets stuck with another persons work load. They allow clients to speak to the staff any kind of way and the staff gets reprimanded for it! You get no type of compassion if you have family/life emergency. You can’t take off if you don’t have the time for it. They mislead you when you apply for one job they use you to their advantage. When urgent help is needed management is never around, and are not well educated when it comes to questions about essential needs..(ex: insurance questions, scheduling, and more.) No breaks. They tell you not to use your phone while at work but 100% of the time they will try and communicate with staff through personal text messages.

Recently new management has made so many cuts that the atmosphere is very stressful.  There Is a hospital wide voluntary time off standard that has recently been put in place.  Which actually means the second it slows down everyone is sent home and you're forced to take a huge pay cut.  It's averaged to about $200-$600 a paycheck for the last few months.  In all departments, RNs, surgery, imaging etc.  Except for management, they seem to be just fine and without worry about paying their bills.  So, basically they have you running around like a crazy person without time to eat or urinate; it's not exactly the best atmosphere for quality patient care.  We were told we have to take lunch even when understaffed.  Therefore, if it's not busy when we first clock in take lunch. Or literally 30 minutes before you clock out you should take lunch then go straight home.  So, I'm looking for a new job because I'm starving, I need to urinate and I'm just too old to be stressed at work everyday.

Loved the people I worked with but the customers treat you like garbage and trash the store all day long. There's no room for advancement or promotion unless you are willing to transfer to another store. You find some really interesting things but you also come across a lot of soiled and rotted items that people think are ok to donate. I've had grown men throw temper tantrums over having to deny their molded donations along with grown women doing the same thing about something being 90 cents instead of 60 cents. Customers from the age of 18-40 seemed alright and friendly but the majority of customers there are seniors and they are the worst when it comes to getting any respect. And don't get me started if you forget to apply their senior discount even though we're not supposed to ask if they even qualify for it!

I work in a fast paced environment where staff need to work together to take care of the patients.  Flexibility is important as situations can change fairly rapidly.  I may begin my day in prep and be pulled to assist another procedure.  At the end of the day I may be asked to assist in recovery or again assist in a specialized procedure where not all nurses are trained.   Patient post calls are an important part at the end of the day as well as stocking supplies.   Working independently is also important when I assist in Bronchoscopy procedures as the staff support dynamics change in that area.   Taking call is also required about two times per month. 
The hospital also ensures we have continuing education via web based training.

Once they merged with St. Vincent, many jobs were cut even though we were extremely short. Patient care really declined do to less employees and more patients. Employees worried about their jobs, and upper management was rarely seen or available.  I worked there for many years and its a shame that it us turned into big business, not health care or prevention to help patients acheive optimal health.  All decisions made never jncluded the employees who deal with direct patient care.  The turn over is so bad that they have new nurses training new nurses, and doctors are not happy that their orders are not being implemented.

St Vincent Hospital is an okay place to work providing you find the right job. I enjoy the work I do, I just dislike to long drive to and from. A typical day at work for me starts at 6:30a and ends at 4:30p. I work on retrieving orders before patients arrive for their appointments. I ensure all necessary information is listed on the order and if required all necessary patient information regarding their health is included with the order. I learn something everyday in my job and I enjoy learning because it enhances my skills. I currently work with great managers and supervisors and they ensure that I have all the necessary training and tools to be the best at my job. I enjoy working with my co-workers and we truly work as a team. The hardest part of my job is getting the offices to send the correct information the first time around. The enjoyable part of my job is the feeling of accomplishment at the end of the day. I also enjoy having pitch-ins on a monthly basis to celebrate birthdays.
