This company can be fantastic to work for if you are able to be available when they want you to be, never say no, and get along with the patients' families. 
Your hourly pay does not compensate you for driving, and you will be offered cases that are farther away than your 'promised' driving radius. Occasionally, you will be offered compensation for that. You are not paid for orientation on new cases once you have spent the first so many hours orienting at the company. 
If you are on good terms with your schedulers, who frequently work like handlers, you can have a great experience. I definitely recommend being friendly with them, and helping them out when possible. The schedulers in the Mount Laurel and Egg Harbor offices are all very friendly and willing to work with you as much as they are capable. If they are short on staffing, and you are willing to take a shift out of your availability, it goes a very long way in building good relations with them. 
All in all, the company is fantastic to work for, and I am more than grateful for the chance they have given me. It has been nice working for a company founded and run by nurses, as their focus is not just on the best treatment of the patients, but on supporting their nurses to the best of their ability. Many of us in home care have run across problematic cases, but luckily with Star, I have not only had very few, but they have worked to back me up, support me through the situation, and to make sure that I was treated with fairness. 
I am looking forward to when the company becomes electronic, as hand written notes are tedious at best and cramp-inducing at worst. However, if this is the most you have to complain about, the company is pretty good!

I started with Star in November of 2020 so I’m still fairly new. At first, I wasn’t sure this was going to be for me. After a couple of months I became more comfortable and I absolutely LOOOOVE my patients and their families. The scheduling team does an amazing job at finding cases that best suit you and your abilities. The management and overall staff at Star is amazing! I enjoy not feeling pressured into taking other cases. If you ever have any issues with a patient/family the staff will listen to your concerns and make the proper adjustments—-This is a huge difference in comparison to working in a hospital setting. I started with Star because I needed the flexibility and thankfully, the company has been extremely accommodating.

The only con I can think of is the fact that Star is in need of more nurses. This is at no fault to the company as the nursing shortage continues to increase. As someone working 40+ hours, it’s hard for me to balance home life and work life if I work overtime. While there’s no obligation to pick up shifts, I have a helpful nature and will sacrifice my home time to help cover shifts (I know, I know). I’m hopeful that in the future the shortage will not be an issue. 

Overall, Star is a wonderful company with great nurses, staff and families. 

The positives I will give is the flexible scheduling and they will give you the days off you ask for. Thats pretty much it.  Almost every case I've taken is 30 minutes away so of course it takes a toll on my gas. The second you agree to pick up extra shifts they take advantage and either always ask you or add those shifts permanently to your schedule without asking. They used to always give me extra shifts but  for a few months I started declining them because I was burnt out. Now when I ask for overtime I get maybe 1 or 2 extra shifts when I know the patient needs nursing.  The staff definitely plays favorites. You don't get a raise and theyre hiring new nurses and giving them higher pay then nurses who have been there for years. Also if something happens and your shift gets cancled for whatever reason, its very rare they will try to find you another shift. No PTO, health insurance is expensive, they only pay for 4 hours of orientation and after that whenever you orient you dont get paid (and you usually orient for a least an hour). Honesty the reason a lot of us are stiff here is because we get attached to our patients 

I have worked at this company for last 7 years and I think I like to retire from the company. The director is the most supportive person I know and the staff are very courteous and professional when it comes to introduction to clients and management of nurses' schedule. If you care for a long happy nursing career, Star Pediatric Home  is it! I definitely recommend to annyone! I have referred so many of my nurse friends and colleagues and they are working as happy campers with care and support appropriately they deserve. I learned over the past years of working at Start Ped. HCA, I have a home as a nurse to come and be cared for and remembered for! I am grateful for where I am thankful to Star Pediatric Agency!!

Star Pediatrics used to be a great place to work but of late, I am noticing more Physical Therapy tasks are sneaking into care Plans. I know there are shortages in Nursing, Respiratory, Physical, Speech, and Occupational Therapy shortages, however, why are Nurses now being delegated tasks meant for another profession. 
I called my malpractice insurance and they indicated I should not do tasks like putting a small child in a standing table as I could be held liable performing tasks I am not licensed to do, even with training. 

The best way I guess an agency can ask Nurses to do another licensed professional's task is contact New Jersey Nursing Board (I already did) for guidance, devise a training program and get us certified.  If that happens, we should be getting a significant rate upgrade, which Medicaid will have to cough up (I called to check) and then I will perform the task after the doctor sign the care plan listing "standing table" or other non-nursing task as an intervention and part of the goals to complete.

I've been with the company for a couple of years and here is what I've gathered: 

PROS
1. The flexibility in creating your own schedule is the best part
2. The schedulers really work to try and get you your requested days
3. Someone is always on-call, so you can talk to someone, including a clinical manager at almost any time of any day
4. Most of the staff in the office are kind

CONS
1. They give everyone different pay- which sometimes does not correlate to the amount of experience you may have
2. They say that you get a yearly raise, however,  this is false. It is very difficult to obtain 
3.One can say, that they are cheap. No incentives, no bonuses, rarely any gifts for nurses week or holidays. You will be unfortunately mislead if they state that they will provide such.
4. Staff plays favorites 
5. Pre-COVID there were no events for the nurses to become acquainted with one another 
6. No pay for orientation and training


So, it's not the best but it's not the worst. Take this information as you see fit.

They say they have all these cases so you go there and do their tests and fill out their paperwork. Then they demand all of your paperwork before they will even consider setting an appointment for orientation. Took weeks to even get orientation and it lasted the whole day. Your not allowed to park in their very small parking lot so you have to worry about getting a ticket or getting towed. At the end of the day you have to fill out another test and then do more paperwork. The one case that was promised to me was given to the girl sitting next to me. We were told to just keep calling and ask for work. I did that for 6 months then was told they have a brand new case for me. Three months later they said sorry, we don't want a new nurse going out and that was with me calling at least once a week. I guess they felt bad because the next week they offered me a case in the heart of Newark. I declined and haven't heard since. What a waste of time.

Star Pediatric allowed me to begin working as soon as I got my nursing license which was great. They have set me up with cases that are conveniently located and I have gotten along well with the patients and their families. Everyone in the office is very friendly and welcoming, and there is always someone to answer any questions that you may have. They do a hands-on classroom training which is helpful, but so far with my experience, client families have been well-versed in the patient's care and have been willing to teach me, therefore I have learned a lot while on the job. Depending on the case, you may be busy the entire time or you may not be. They still do paper charting which can take some time but it is really not that bad. I have taken a part-time position with another job and will continue to work with Star just because it is so convenient for me.

I told them at my interview that I wanted to work Full Time and I haven’t since I’ve been there. All they’ve been doing is sending me out per diem to homes for nurses who are on vacation. Sometimes they want you sent somewhere quickly without orientation. I love home care but your schedule is not steady. Another employee said they changed her schedule out of nowhere. I had to get a second job.  Either the parent or your scheduler will change when you work. Not to mention it’s rare that you work at a home close by. At least 30 minutes away is what I worked. If you have bills to pay, I would not recommend.

I have worked at several other home care agencies and by far this is the nicest group of people to work for and with.  Very welcoming , caring and down to earth knowledgeable staff.  
I really enjoy working with the families and the one on one patient care.  I have worked in a hospital setting and although I miss the fast pace I truly enjoy the special attention I can give to a child.  
The hardest part of the job is if you are not flexible it could take a bit to get an ideal schedule.  The more flexible you are the more work you will have. As a home care nurse of 6 years I can say I am grateful to work with an amazing team!
