Sterling Medical

The work environment in the Hopkinsville VA CBOC was fantastic.  Everyone worked as a team.  The director was great to her employees. She treated everyone fairly. She truly cared about the employees and listened to their needs and concerns. The entire team was dedicated to serving the veterans.
Most of the veterans always seemed to enjoy coming for their appointments to the clinic.
Sterling Medical pays generous salaries to the employees- at least for Nurse Practitioners.
There were ample paid days/ holidays off.
The only cons were:
1- the high cost for insurance and 
2-requirement to give 45 day notice for days off. I think this requirement was by VA and since sterling is contract clinic-it was therefore required by Sterling of the employees there.
I LOVED working at this clinic! The only reason I left was that I ws driving 70 miles round trip daily, and found a job closer to my home. But in afterthought, I have questioned whether the change was a good one. I miss the Hopkinsville team and also miss serving the veterans there.

A typical day at work was patient care and team work. Everyone was willing to help out and look out for one another. I learned while with Sterling Medical to speak with an indivudal if I have been offended., but never allow anything to affect patient care or patient an uneasy feeling that there was a clinical problem. The management on site was very kniving. It seems her goal has always been to turn co-workers against one another. The co-workers were fine when working together. We didn't mind taking critism from one another or another co-worker correcting something we may have not done correctly. Or explaining to one another what we weren;t sure of knowing. The hardest part of the job was keeping your name out of the site managers office for any little thing and not knowing when or if you did anything to be written up by your contractor. The most enjoyable part of the job was when all the co-workers were able to talk and laugh together at the end of the day once we got through a twelve hour shift.We were then able to relax and get to know one another.

Applied for a contract position and heard from a recruiter immediately.  However, their pay was quite lower than a competitor’s offering.  The recruiter explained why that could be and I felt pressured to make a decision and go with Sterling, but I held out.

Another person called me asking me what it would take to get me, and I told them I do not want to sell myself short and am awaiting another offer.  They then upped their hourly rate and offered a sign on bonus.  I still held out and told them I would not leave them hanging and would get back to them with the other offer.

I emailed both people about my newest offer seeing if they would meet it (because I probably would’ve gone with them) but they never replied.  Instead I received a rejection letter from the Indeed advisor.

Overall the people were nice and seemed understanding but I was quite put off by their decision to lowball my offer and then pressure me into another offer.  I also don’t find their lack of a response profession or becoming of a professional outfit.

The opportunity for employment abroad. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Sometimes the company has its expectations and the actual site has theirs   It can be stressful meeting two bosses expectations. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Sterling works with you from far away. Communication is all electronically. I didn’t see their environment; however, everyone is very polite and respectful when communicating.  There’s lots of documents to complete, sign and submit. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Sterling does not deal with you on a daily basis. Is the site where you are working. My site was the Air Force in Italy and the Army in Germany   Best job locations.  Great people to work with, well, there’s always issues,  personalities, and your own tolerance level,  homesickness can last if you don’t make friends

I wasn't even interviewed for this job!  How many people never got interviewed and just started working?  First, they put you through "training" that is so out of date and irrelevant that I felt I had wasted my time.  Second, contacting someone is difficult unless you bombard them with emails.  Third, any problem you may have is not worth fighting about because they say "we will fight for you" and then don't even care what you have to say.  They just don't want to deal with the problem (in my case a backstabbing coworker), especially being so far away from you and your job, so they just sweep it under the rug and blame you for their problems.  I can't even get unemployment, and anyone that contacts them will get a bad report.  I will not work for them or any other contracting company again.  Oh, and their flexible spending account is terrible.  You'd better have something to spend that money on, because you can't get it back!!  After I lost my job, I couldn't take the money out unless I had medical expenses that were "legitimate."

The work I did for the business that I worked for was very rewarding. However 1) the contract ended abruptly 5.5 months later with 1 year remaining; 2) we were notified by EMAIL on a HOLIDAY weekend; 3) We signed contracts saying they would give us a 30 day notice if the job ended and likewise we needed to give them 30 days. THEY GAVE US 21 DAYS! 4) The cost of their health insurance is atrocious! 5) A LOOONNNGG time between contract signing and actually starting! 6) The email term notice indicated that Sterling would be contacting us with final instructions within the "next week or so"...I have 4.5 days left....still waiting for that contact!
Typical day was phone conferences, etc. This was good.
Learned Excel! Management where I did the work was excellent! Sterling...well it left alot to be desired. There was no hardest part of the job.The most enjoyable was the fact I made a difference in quality for the people I was working for!

A typical day is to clock-in, perform tasks that are job descriptive while trying to perform my own responsibilities. Rely on poor equipment that the company refuses to upgrade after multiple attempts. Deal with poor, unorganized, unethical, poor leadership qualified manager. Co-workers are individualized and constant non compliance to policy. The honest hardest part is that I feel like the ONLY person here that puts out all around and gets nothing gin return and I have ZERO support. I use to LOVE coming to work when the leadership was a lot better and more organized, ethical, accountability was better, SUPPORT FROM MANAGEMENT with higher up assistance. But now, I develop anxiety because the leader has none of the proper qualities that a manager(supervisor) NEEDS to obtain for a successful staff and positive productivity.

It's difficult to write a fair review because I work remotely and have not been to the office or met fellow employees.  I would say that the ability to work from home and have flexible hours is wonderful. I have been disappointed by the lack of communication and training.  As far as training goes I was given several forms to read and the received my files.  I later found out that most of the forms given to me to read were not related to the my position and only found out after asking specific questions.  Also, I found out after having worked for 1 month that referrals had been stopped indefinitely and there was no way to know when they would start again.  I am a contractor and get paid based on the number of files/reports I complete.  Would have been nice to know that up front.  Lastly, I applied for and was hired for the position in June/July but due to the horrendous onboarding process I was unable to start working until November!!!

Review of numerous request for services per military personnel and families for requested procedures such as lifts or surgical intervention and transmitted once referral completed to Humana for approval.  Learned that supporting information was required and the more sent to Humana the more likely it would be approved.  Management was excellent in teaching and promoting for hard work performed.  Co-workers were always willing to help and were able to function in different aspects of duties(switched between active duty to retired and family member departments).  Hardest part of job reading some of terrible consequences that occurred to soldiers or family members.  The most enjoyable was ability to get approved needed service that may have been denied originally.

Monday through Friday work and  paid holidays

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Lack of communication requests don’t get answered for example when asking for a raise. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Work environment is stressful.  Certain employees get special treatment they get away with coming in late to work more than 30 minutes and taking multiple  breaks throughout the day for more than 15 minutes each time. They take longer than their 30 min lunch break. All this  with no repercussions 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
It’s whatever.  Dealing with other people’s mistakes is stressful and having to pick up their slack because they just sit there browsing the web or on their cellphones texting and making personal calls all the while ignoring patients that are waiting in line to be checked in or out.
