I worked for Still Hopes for 3 years PRN. I always felt appreciated, and always felt like my concerns were heard and my suggestions were listened to. My typical day varied as I was trained in several areas. Generally I would work the floor and pass out medications. I enjoyed all of my coworkers, we were a family. Management always came around and asked everyone if they needed anything and how they were doing. The most enjoyable part of the job was my coworkers. They always kept it fun. The patients are generally not very demanding. This was a good job that I enjoyed to work at a few times a month. I even got a surprise raise. I liked that our raises were yearly because they are not like that everywhere. The pay is competitive. The health benefits (which I did not qualify for as PRN) were better than any other nursing job I have had. I only left this job to be able to work more overtime hours in the ICU I work in full time. They even reached out to me when I turned in my notice within 5 minutes to ask if there was anything they could do to change my mind, which made me feel important to them. This place is 1 in a million and it is a GREAT place to work and I say that coming from 4 years of rehab experience in 3 different rehabs and 2 different hospitals.

Overall, I LOVED working for this company and anticipated retiring from there. After almost 9 years with this company, I made the difficult decision to leave and pursue a different career path. The last change in management is the reason I left because they chose whose back they wanted to have within their department and that’s not a way to manage. The lack of communication, especially on time sensitive matters, was the worst I have ever experienced and when you would try to address it by providing a suggestion for more effective communication, it got brushed under the rug, like almost everything did if you happen to be friends with the boss. They would pick and choose who to apply the company policies to if you reported to them. Nothing was fair and across the board when it came to “being a team”. The residents, however, were the ones who motivated me to come to work. They were all AMAZING individuals that quickly became my second family. I would say the company as a whole is great, but management, at least where I worked needs major improvement.

I work with individual clients,most of them still live in their homes. my clients need help with daily activities like walking up stairs, bathing, cooking or administering medications. I also take some of them on outings like the grocery store or doctors appointments.  I also work in the skills unit on campus, the dementia unit and the assisted living unit.
I've learned that although people are diagnosed with the same illness, it effects every differently. I love my management team! They are very fair and easy to approach. My co-workers are easy to get along with and I believe one reason is because management treats us so good. The hardest part of this job is when a client passes away. The most enjoyable part of the job is getting all the hugs and kisses and thank you's from my clients and just knowing that I have made a positive difference in someone's life.

Still Hopes is a great place to work. Management has been very flexible with my PTO requests and understands when I am sick. They do expect me to give a 3 hour notice if calling out, which isn’t horrible, and I have the option of finding my own coverage and not being penalized for call outs.  It is a different culture than other places I’ve worked in that they actually care about the residents and the employees. They want to provide the best life possible to their residents. No place is perfect but they do their best and better than any company I have worked for as a nurse. The team work is good. Those that aren’t team players or dont fit the culture weed themselves out quickly.

time pressure to get everything done and extra work added and having to be house supervisor for hours until they showed up

stressful. management did not back nurses up just looked out for selves. not respective to new ideas that would help improve the environment or care

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
report then med pass then charting wound care dealing with new admissions/ pt/ot and list goes on

I have learned a lot about the medical community working at Still Hopes. I work hard and steady all day.  There is no lag time. I work between four  units representing the administrator.  I set-up meetings and take minutes from many of them.  I do lots of scheduling of meetings, spaces and catering for those meetings. I maintain lots of files and confidential information.  I also the licensure for all these units. 

The most enjoyable part of my day is working with the nursing staff.

this company cares about its employees as well as their residents. there is always a sense of family and community. residents and staff work with each other for the benefit of the facility. the wellness programs offered are unbeatable with a 5 star gym on sight that is employee friendly. the staff development coordinator consistently provides continuing education programs so that the staff will be on top of all the newest treatments and therapies insuring the best trained staff to provide for the residents.

Pay is not competitive for the area.  I was hired into a position 5 more per hr with little experience. DON spends her days watching camera footage from all shifts.  This is what I found to be the most degrading thing.  This type of behavior causes such a split between staff and management.  Either someone is paranoid or the staff is so horrible they have to be micromanaged.  Very toxic culture.  Management approachable.  If they want a better reputation increase pay and support your staff because other facilities are doing it.  

Fun workplace! Very involved w/ community and relationships w/in the facility to include resident/patients, their pets and families! Culture is kind and welcoming. Hardest part of job is the training. Need designated program and trainer for licensed area. Second shift nurse is a bully and not helpful, but one person cannot make a bad facility. THIS IS A SPECTACULAR PLACE TO WORK I love it here

start off at $10/hr with no tips, but being around residents can be fun and rewarding. really good food, restaurant staff care a lot. difficult to work your way up in company or switch to different job positions in other areas (such as marketing, human resources, etc.). be ready to work hard. "fine dining" can be hard to get used to as well. also be prepared to deal with residents occasionally being rude, impatient, etc.
