Structural Technologies

Each day I manager the manufacturing employees, the purchasing team and conducted business opportunities with vendors.  I would constantly troubleshoot any challenges the team had and find solutions within the team.  I traveled to meet clients and address their needs.

I knew nothing about the industry when I first started.  I learned how the business worked.  I adapted a positive safety culture.  The CFO taught me all the ins and outs of the accounting principles and how the company operated financially.  

The management team is a hard group of dedicated and loyal employees.  We worked together to try and improve upon the shortfalls and challenges within the company.

The hardest part of the job was trying to meet logistical and material needs without having any true MRP system.  Many times, the lead times are short and you are constantly shifting the team on the fly to meet the demands of the projects.

The most enjoyable part, by far, is the people, the team itself.  The company had its' challenges, but the dedicated group of people helped to fix it.  I feel another enjoyable part was, taking something that needed improvement and making the improvements happen.  It was a very hard task, but the results were worth it.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The processes in securing the work can be on a long sales cycle, and it's easy to start missing details.  The hours in the field can be long too, but it's a lot of O/T.
Several divisions within the firm sometimes work together and other times go solo.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Culture is very quality oriented.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Depends on the type of role with the firm. 
Field work is 8 to 12-hour shifts. Strong safety procedures and quality workmanship.
Business Development is finding the work and securing the sale. 
Management is scheduling, pricing, contract review, and problem solving.

The Jacksonville office of Structural technologies has very inept and insecure management where upper management does not rein them in.  Even when confronted with violation of industry norms, failure to proceed with erroneous direction constantly put your position at risk.  Management acknowledges it is a hard place to work.  The reason though is that middle management is inept and forces subordinates to create poorly performing components because they insist that it all be done their way and for the most part incorrectly.  While the product itself is conceptually good, the implementation is flawed because of poor middle management.  If you are electrical, do not take a position because if you try to do it right, you will always be walking on egg shells.... they do not understand automation and insist they are smarter than everyone else.

I arrived when my team arrived, although I did not have to.  I ensured everyone was doing good, had everything they needed, gave the fist bumps and showed them I was there. Throughout the day I handled any challenges that arose.  Conducted meetings with vendors and additionally sat in and led scheduled staff meetings.

I learned everything about the civilian side of business.  Budget, P&L, operations, safety culture. Additionally, I learned about materials such as cast and machined metals, plastics, etc.

Management, which I was part of, was involved and engaging.

Everyone did their part to try and make the team succeed.

If you get injured on the job, file it right away and get legal help. They will brush off any permanent injury you may have attained instead of getting you the proper medical coverage. They hire prior felons and drug users and force you to stay in the same hotel room. They also force you to ride with another driver instead of paying for your travels. It can take years before you are promoted and they offer no training besides whatever training you can maybe learn from your foreman. Little pay, excessive work, unstable hours, no life, and no appreciation.

Structural is in a field with constant demand and as such you’d expect great job security. That isn’t the case. The company spends an inordinate amount of time on internal meetings and has a bureaucratic approach to conducting business that is infernally slow. 
Expectations are that new employees will simply learn how to navigate their “revered” upper management and process with no training or mentoring.  

Techs are gone almost 8-10 months out of year. Have to use vacation to come home. Pay is good for techs. The shop is a grim atmosphere. Managers only worried about their bonus, no team atmosphere, and bullied into doing things you’re not ok with. 3 shop managers in the last three years and the one that has stayed is only out for himself and no help at all. He will call you after hours to talk to you about work and “I friend” you if you stop answering his calls and look for a reason t fire you. . Not worth your time for the headache you will have

We work hard as a team,to make sure that all task are finished in a timely manner making sure that safety comes first.I provide fork lift assistance when needed as well as any other task I see called for.I enjoy the way that everyone comes together to help one another the most about my current job.Over all it is a great job unfortunitely I have to move on to another job because the job is scheduled to be completed early september.

this has been a good job for me I had the chance to expose myself to other company workers working at the same site. Sharing our experiences. Doing jobs on the military bases that require higher pay Davis Bacon. Get to learn new things from other fellow workers. The hardest part of the job is applying fiberglass under the ceiling where you have a scissor lift with 30 feet of fiberglass.  The most enjoyable part is the travel to the nearby island every week fly out monday and fly back friday.

Set up and routine maintenance on D.O.T. Traffic control work zones using channelizing devices; Cones, flags, barrels, signs, message board, barricades, arrow boards and truck mounted scorpion crash trucks.
Prep and install carbon fiber to secure up concrete structural repairs.
Install post-tensioning cables to support concrete structures.
Chip and sand blast away concrete to make repairs as needed on concrete structures.
