Summerlin Hospital

The facility itself is nice and the staff are hardworking. The workload is high, pt acuity is VERY high (higher than the other med surg units), ratios are 7:1, admin is very demanding and staff are running for the hills. The unit is mostly comprised of new grads (or RNs w/ less 2 yrs or less of experience) because the unit struggles to retain staff. Most of our pt's are post-op and require close monitoring and care so the workload is quite high. On many days you just hit the ground running. All of this wouldn't be so terrible if staff also didn't feel unappreciated. Admin is very strict and constantly nitpick for miniscule things however, refuse to address staffing issues. I have learned a great deal skills, and the staff truly care. The nurse manager is also nice (one of the best nurse managers I've had) and it is evident that she tries to support staff as much as possible. However, she is still management and has her hands bound by upper admin. Thus she can only do so much. It almost seems that our unit is held to an even higher standard than the other med surg units and therefor we have to cater to pts' every demand and we are regularly admonished for insignificant things. Staff morale is very low and people constantly talk about how they feel stressed/anxious and want to quit. It is a shame because I am willing to bet that in the next 6 months there will probably be another new roster of new staff d/t more people transferring or quitting all together. 

ER Technician/ Main Unit Coordinator (UC) and EMR Floor Cerner Super User. Multiple support roles – client and age specific care - Acute/ Sub Acute/ Adult/ Peds/ Mental Health/ Flight Assist. Culturally competent and HIPAA conscious. Main UC managing multi-line phone system (large call volume) with multi screen VDT. Provided vital information to directors, supervisors and staff. Simultaneously maintaining alertness to : office tasks, data entry/retrieval, staff, visitors, and patients. UC duties not limited to: various electrical equipment use, specialized knowledge, 2 way radio communication, video surveillance, overhead paging for staff or code call i.e. STEMI; generating reports, charging accounts, monitoring other stations, fax, email, call lights, reviewing charts and coordinating with staff to input orders, preparing transfer charts, and de escalation. As Cerner Super User I assisted in implementation, training and questions of electronic medical records. Clinically assisted with Physician, PA, and Nurse procedures. Performed environmental organization, maintenance, hazardous asepsis, supply. Patient care such as: monitoring telemetry, arrhythmia recognition, 12 lead ecg, reporting changes in s/s, dictating, bandaging, splinting, ADLs, device training, and resuscitation.

You get a lot of different types of experience due to the diverse patient population

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
It is expected that you do multiple functions at the same time, to the point that it is not safe and you are set up to fail.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
It is for the young.  Take any experience you get and leave.  If you age there, you will be discriminated against.  Your wages will climb due to longevity and then you will become a target  as a newer employee will be less expensive for Summerlin Hospital

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
There is generally insufficient staffing by design.  If people call out on top of the inadequate staffing, you could be working with someone untrained to do whatever they are doing.  Management's priorities change everyday so you need to guess what is priority on any given day.

A typical day as a Traypasser includes taking carts upstairs and delivering trays to patients all over the hospital. From the 1st floor all the way to the sixth floor. There are four Tray passers total, around 5 carts per person. A day As a worker on the TrayLine includes completing the food tray and passing it forward. Trayline includes being on the dish room, breaking (throwing away leftover food from tray). Lightly cleaning the dishes and putting in dishwasher. Very easy job. Three breaks total. ( 2 paid 15 minute breaks and 1 unpaid 30 minute break). The best part of the job is interacting with patients, hospital staff (Housekeeping, pharmacists, nurses, cna's,warehouse workers), and your own co-workers in the dietary department. Overall very nice place to work. Fun events held during the holidays. Appreciation for Food Service Employee Week, events and gifts for us.

I think throughout the Las Vegas area the average RN to patient ratio is 1:6, and maybe a couple people will end up with 1:7.  I worked day shift on a med-surg unit and it was entirely way too much, especially for a unit with high patient turn-over. It's doable, but it's not safe. This was the huge thing that made working there such a drag and difficult to actually take breaks. For the first few months I was not getting my breaks. 
Also, some of the day-to-day practices are a bit outdated--still doing many things on paper instead of using technology. Also, a lot of the EMR processes to be outdated and not efficient or effective enough. 

Otherwise, the team I worked with was great! Everyone is really supportive, my manager was incredible. They are a progressive hospital and are thriving to make many changes in practices, which is always awesome! The most enjoyable part of the job was the team.  Also, we were able to self-schedule about a month & a half ahead of time--again, on paper, not online.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
I have not experience is stressful moment.  
At time patients are upset. And that hurts me to see them I make sure I hear them and I listen to their issue and I correct situation so when they leave the office, they are happy

Best place to work at.  Love coming into to knowing. I am able to help patient & clients 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Being very  a very busy person and active. I love it

Supervisors will use anything to diminish and demoralize you regardless of how good you are at your job.  Toxic coworkers are given the ability to bad mouth good employees to boss and completely destroy morale.  After they go to boss,  I would spend 45 minutes in office having to respond to false accusations.  
I was completely in the right but I was made to be completely in the wrong.

For three years My job performance always exceeded expectations with great evaluations.  New supervisors rolled in and evaluated me poorly in every metric.  

Every day seemed like it could be the day I would be fired for anything.

It was great to work there at one time.  I was glad to get out.  Even with a notice, my logins were disabled the last day I was supposed to work.  I was unable to work and couldn’t get paid for the time.  It was extremely mean and vindictive.

Busy from the moment I walk in. I learned things everyday such as what the roles of each chief of dept is. Management was very knowledable, however, showed favortism with certain providers depending if she liked them or not. Some rules were bent to cater to the providers she liked and didn't cater to ones that she didn't like. Work place culture was ok. Except alot of infidelities were going on within the employees and cause havoc within the work place. 

Hardest part of the job was  not being able to meet deadlines sometimes because the person you are working with doesn't show up to work or communicate that they wil not e able to complete their part to meet the deadline.  L love being mulit tasked and working under pressure. And being able to assist the providers with what they need in order for them to give the patients the best care

This hospital is constantly hiring, no one really stays for long after they figure out how back stabbing the O.R staff is, from the charge nurses to the technicians. I worked in CVOR Rm.10 I was set up for failure on a continuous basis, the Surgeons are total monsters to work with, they cuss you out and throw instruments across the room. Hostile workplace, the CV First Assist are incompetent in their skill set to the point it became a patient safety issue. The entire CV team is cutthroat and will sabotage your hard work and effort. If you want over the top stress (High School  Drama) then you might like working in the OR at Summerlin Medical Center. I couldn’t stomach the Toxic Environment any longer so for my sanity and overall health I had to move on, they have such a horrible reputation in the Las Vegas Region.

I would go to work not sure what to expect. I would be tasked with making pamphlets or bringing meals to patients. I would play games and do crafts with the patients.
I learned that I have to take the initiative when it comes to a volunteering job in terms of getting work. It was imperative that I come across as dependable and ready for any task I would be given.
Co-workers were nice, but I didn't get a chance to talk to them about anything other than work-related material. Overall, they were friendly though.
The hardest part of the job was probably mustering up the courage to go and talk to someone regarding questions about the job or asking for something to do.
The most enjoyable part of the job was being able to work with young kids.
