Typical day of work at Texoma Medical Center ER started at 1pm (I worked 1pm-1am). First, obtain report, make first rounds on patients. If no patients are currently present in my assigned rooms, make sure rooms are stocked for next upcoming patient. In the emergency room I was able to solidify basic nursing skills, more importantly I learned to think swiftly but cautiously in my assessment skills whenever a patient first arrives at the hospital. Time management is definitely a challenge in the emergency room due to never knowing what is going to come in through the ambulance bay or walk in the lobby doors. I have excellent coworkers, working as a new graduate in the emergency room; I was able to learn a great deal on time management and critical thinking from some of the smartest nurses and physicians around, some of these nurses being my previous instructors in nursing school. The hardest part of my job would be not being able to take bathroom breaks, drink water, or eat as frequently as I should due to the difficulty of finding momentary relief. This in turn leads to mental/physical fatigue which in turn can affect nursing efficiency. There are definitely those shifts where the emergency room is so busy that I would not be able to at least obtain a drink water for 6-8 hours at a time, but when you have sick patients, their needs always come first. Sometimes you just have to speak up and let your charge nurse know and they will do their best to relieve you, even if it's just for 5 minutes. The most enjoyable part of my job, was knowing that I was able to make a difference in a patient's care, and also providing patient teaching in a way that empowered patients to become more in control of their health.

Must follow specific method of work or sometimes by trial and error due to lack of defined information. Leadership is similar to military. No questions, only assumptions when judgments are made by leadership. In my experience of 4 departments (non-clinical), the poorest morale I’ve ever encountered in a work place. Management style is by intimidation, across  the departments. Management tends to be unapproachable (uninterested, lack of eye contact, unfriendly, unavailable, negative vibes, condescending comments, oppositional). No formal training for any job position where I’ve worked (job specific information is difficult to acquire and not in writing). Sick or vacation time is seemingly frowned upon. Responsibilities increase with no additional time or resources. Extremely high turnover. No recognition for non-clinical staff, despite patient compliments. Management has no care about employees as people.  Compliments are rare to extinct. Non-constructive criticism is plentiful. Communication is vague, if any. Don’t ask for clarification or insightful questions, otherwise you’re assumed to not know how to do your job. Once a year generic feedback, unless you make a mistake. High turnover. 

First I check emails to see if there are any new instructions on editing reports, etc. I check the list of surgeries for the day in Cerner and make sure they are already typed in Nuance. If not, I look for dictated reports and edit and copy to HIM and to the Nurse's station. We adjust our editing requirements according to dictator preferences that change periodically. Then I check priority work types and edit dictated reports. When the priority work is accomplished, then I to to my work type for the day; radiology, H&Ps, consults, etc. Periodically respond to emails by supervisors or other departments requiring stat reports. I work as quicklyl and efficiently as I can.

Management has been responsive to concerns. For instance, by the end of the month, most doctors will be using Nuance Dragon and the hospital will require fewer transcriptionists. They are informing us of available jobs in the hospital that we can apply for.

My coworkers are great. They all pitch in when needed and answer technical questions I may have immediately. Everyone gets along well. They are always willing to work my shift when needed.

The hardest part of my job is taking the mandatory courses; LMS-HealthStream modules throughout the year. Most of the courses do not directly apply to being a medical editor/transcriptionist.

The most enjoyable part of my job is knowing the speech dictation is edited with accuracy and the end user appreciates my efforts.

The med-surg floors are all switching to “team nursing”, which means the RN has 10 patients along with an LVN and tech. Although you do have help from the LVN with some meds, it is incredibly overwhelming having that many patients in 1 shift and I constantly felt like I was going to miss something or make a mistake. It is especially hard when your team doesn’t work hard to help you, which unfortunately was the case often. I’m sure other floors that aren’t med-surg are good to work on and I believe this is a great hospital. The benefits and pay were decent also. But, I worried everyday that I’d lose my license from making a mistake and I wasn’t the only one. I have years of experience as an inpatient med-surg RN prior to this and am pretty tolerant to the hard things the hospital setting can throw at you, but this is a position I couldn’t stay in. Hoping they’ll realize the team nursing isn’t working and switch back over but don’t see that happening soon due to money reasons. Be careful med-surg applicants!

Typical workdays are full of demands and deadlines and gossip. 
I learned that leadership doesn’t listen to you. I went to my mgr with a problem. Didn’t get attention. I followed up with going to my Director, no attempt to resolve problem. Then I went to HR. Still no response to the problem. The problem was being bullied. Just shut up and do your job. 
The hardest part of the job was respecting the leadership. The bad attitudes in the workplace was a direct reflection of the poor leadership. 
We were promised a reward for reaching a goal. We reached the goal. No reward. Then they wonder why we don’t work harder and faster. 
The culture is kiss up to 3 sisters. Be a favorite or reap the fruits of rotten treatment.
The 3 Sisters all work in the same area and two of them are supervisors. They have favorites and bully anyone that isn’t a favorite. 
The most enjoyable part of the job was making a difference in patient's lives. Caring and helping people who are in a difficult position and giving them a ray of sunshine even if only for a moment. My patience’s really appreciated me. 
That made everything else worth it. 

This is a hospital where patients came first and foremost If something was needed but it hadn't been ordered by the physician, there wasn't any hesitation to call and ask for an order. The work envirionment was very laid back and friendly. Work was done in a timely manner and management was understanding if something hadn't been done by the close of business as long as the task was completed the following morning...without exception. This facility doubled as a teaching facility for the nursing school so there were procedures and protocols to be followed but there was leeway given if there was an error by the student. This was a hospital that people chose to go even though there were 3 other facilities in the area that would have been able to perform the same services. This was a country hospital that was destined for greatness and became the preeminent facility that served North Texas and Oklahoma and received the accolades that normally were reserved for the "big city" hospitals.

It's an enjoyable job for the most part. My job here at the Behavioral Health Center is to monitor every patient on my assigned unit to make sure they stay safe by making rounds every 15 minutes to ensure that I know where every patient is at all times. I have learned a lot, such as taking vital signs, entering in computer paperwork, as well as responsibility. However, management and seems scattered a lot, in terms of the rules. It seems like everyone comes up with different rules, making it difficult to know what can and can't be done at times. Some co-workers are very helpful, whereas others, not so much. The hardest part of the job is when there is a full unit, making it difficult to learn all the names and keeping track of everyone at first.

There was a $5000 sign in bonus but also a one year contract. It is not worth taking because of how unorganized this department is. There is little to no real communication with the department management and the floor lead technician with the employees. There are a lot of slothful employees that tend to neglect their assignments and duties only to pass them on to another shift, which the lead technician overlooks and ignores. There is a lot of unfair preference and micro managing that occurs and it is very unprofessional. There is no real policy on employees calling in sick and there is no effort to help find coverage, many times a technician will find themselves working alone on a 10 hour shift. It would be wise to look into another hospital or even a retail pharmacy rather than this hospital. 

My job was totally awesome! I love computers & learning the computerized switchboard, then being able to assist callers, both outside and inside.  My associates were kind and helpful, so within a week I was able to be on a designated shift. The only negative point was management (Supervisor) would change and we would get someone that knew NOTHING about what we did or how to do any of it, but worse, did not want to learn. Mostly they said they wanted their own office (where we could not see them do nothing), so eventually they would leave. Hopefully there has been improvement since I was working there.

When I first started working there it was good. The upper management seemed supportive and cared. Then it changed and it was not for the better.  There was so much rotating over who was over the department, you never knew one day to the next what was going to happen.  They would get rid of good managers because they wouldn't let themselves be pushed around by inexperienced leaders with grandiose ideas.  You couldn't trust  your immediate manager at the end because they were in the pockets of other people....and they would not listen when their was major issues in the department.  I would honestly worry that a family member would end up more sick if they went to this hospital. 10 out of 10 would not recommend.
