TRU Community Care

The management team does not know how to treat employees with respect.  They micro manage every aspect of the employees work life and try to manage their private lives.  All employees are given a script they must use when working with the patients.  (It is called THE DANCE and was developed by an old social worker at TRU)  It starts with “what is your greatest need today,” and moves from there.  If management finds out you deviate from the script you are written up.   Then employees have attend meetings on the proper way to communicate with co-workers and are given another script to follow (called The Coin Conversation) trainer told employees “if you do not follow this, you will not work here.”  Management started to require that employees stay late to participate in classes that will “help improve your life.”   Management does not like for employees to voice any concerns and quickly label those employees as “toxic.” 
Due to the poor management the turnover is off the charts with at least 3-4 people leaving every month.  The result is the caseloads run high as they are trying to constantly replace employees.  When I started 8 out of 10 people on my team were new due to turn over.   In addition to a high caseload employees are given a huge service area to drive.  I could easily put 100 miles on my car in a day.   The amount of documentation is ridiculous, as goes beyond Medicare requirements.  Again, documentation has to follow a template from which employees not allowed to deviate, or you will be written up. 
In my history of working, I have never worked for a company that is run like a cult.  Drink the Kool-Aid, let them micro manage your life, and you will fit right in.

I feel very grateful and lucky to work on a caring team with polite, kind, caring teammates and managers. Unlike other nursing jobs, here I've never been micromanaged, suffocated by rules, ignored, or treated less than respectfully. I'm regularly asked for my opinions, and I feel listened to and taken into consideration. My team is respectful and truly cares about our patient's best possible experiences. I got a nice hiring bonus, plus not just 1 but 2 lucky pay raises when TRU did a pay study and decided they weren't competitive enough.  I get paid holidays, fair PTO,  plus nobody ever denies my PTO requests just because they feel like it, (unlike past employers!) My co-workers are all real team players and we support each other. I feel accepted and respected here, plus treated like an adult who wants to do a great job, and trust me, that's not always how it's been at other nursing jobs. If I had one wish for this company it would be that more people like me who truly love patients and their people and who want to give them the very best care would join us..... for me, the only lack is more loving humans who truly care, who feel this passion to help others to join this great team!  I want everyone who works here to strive to be their very best. I think if you bring it they'll honor it.

There are many amazing employees who are committed to serving those at the end of life. Unfortunately , senior management has an agenda of micromanagement  and fear based leadership. They require staff to participate in communication workshops and "how to" seminars to prevent "non-toxic" communication. However, they don't practice what they preach. Favoritism and nepotism is common among this group. Several of the Vice Presidents don't have the personnel skills required to deal with staff. The constant turnover is quite difficult. It's a constant challenge of "you must" and "if you don't " that leads to staff burnout. Some at the VP level need to move aside and listen to the staff who are committed and bring forth ideas on how to make things better. I believe that there are those that are stagnant and have been in their positions too long. Move over and let those with compassion and enthusiasm  bring forth their ideas. If you don't, this cycle will continue until the organization fails. It's time for a change.

I have worked at TRU for several years and have found that like any organization, there are ups and downs within the organization.  BUT, this organization has gone through positive changes and it is amazing to watch all the staff come together and provide great care to the patients and families we care for.  I have worked for large medical organizations and have seen the same struggles within the larger organization that TRU faces.  There is employee turnover, but no more than what other organizations face in turnover rates.  People who choose to leave TRU have spoken about employee turnover, and the only reason it feels like a higher turnover rate is because it is a smaller company compared to larger health care organizations. I am a believer that a good organization is always a "work in progress", and TRU has been working hard to improve the already stellar care we provide, increase staff satisfaction, and to always look at becoming better than we were yesterday.  I highly recommend TRU Community Care as a great place to work!

I have worked at TRU for over 4 years. There are some very skilled and wonderful employees.  The mission of the agency is beautiful  and staff care deeply for the patients and families served. Unfortunately the environment at TRU is chaotic and dysfunctional.  Very high turnover (including senior management) and high patient case loads. We have had various things such as focus groups, consultants, design groups, and employee boards to help improve the culture, but nothing works because the root of the problem is not fixed. The problem is the CEO and some senior management. The culture is fear based and employees and some management are not able to do their jobs or use their talents due to micromanagement and poor planning by CEO and some VPs. This agency has so much potential but sadly things don't seem to improve.  I'm looking for another job because I can't handle the dysfunction anymore; so sad.

Most hospice companies within the Denver area are growing but this company is shrinking. What little management there is, is poor and they micromanage staff. They have no resources to assist staff and patients. They use their non-profit status as an excuse for their short comings in patient care. They have no communication within the company at all, even when being in the same office and is even more lacking when it comes to families and facilities they work with. I have received several emails after resigning from them, stating either they reviewed by resume and went with others or they would like me to apply with them. I have yet to receive a final check after almost a month of resigning from them. If you are looking to work within a hospice company or with a hospice company do not choose this one.

It is an honor to serve the community and care for patients and families. I love the mission of the organization and so many of the staff and wonderful volunteers.  Unfortunately the agency is very unstable and not lead well.  There seems to be a fear based, top-down culture. Leaders don't appear to get along or agree on the direction of the agency. There is constant ineffective change. The toxic culture is emotionally exhausting. Hospice care is already a difficult line of work; the agency should be more uplifting and take better care of staff so staff can provide the best care possible to patients and families in the community.

I worked for tru for a couple of years as a nurse case manager.  I would not recommend working for this company.  Very difficult to get work done in an 8 hour day and instead of trying to make things easier for the nurses, management adds more difficult tasks.  They also expect their nurses to once a month take call.  This is not easy when you finish work at 5 pm on a friday and your call shift starts at 7 pm.  If you have children it is difficult to balance work and home life.  The nature of hospice is that it can be an emotional job and my advice to management  is to take care of their staff.  Listen when they talk to you before they just quit because they feel they are not valued.  High turn over and burn out is common.

I worked for TRU on Hospice teams in the field for 4 years.  I found the training great and extremely thorough.  And my fellow staff were amazing.  Everyone worked hard and were committed.  The management was supportive and cared deeply about the patients, family and staff.  I think that health care is a tough place to be these days and of course you felt that at times, but there was always support available to me and understanding as we worked together to care for patients and families.  There are not a whole lot of opportunities for advancement in a mid sized hospice unless you want RN management but I was never afraid of losing my job.

I have worked at TRU for 2.5 years. Overall I find the work very rewarding. I have found that TRU gives employees the tools and knowledge needed to provide care and patient service to those in the community with serious illnesses as well as their families. What I love most about TRU is the culture of hard work and compassion which is needed to care for vulnerable populations. I feel like management (for the most part) listens to their employees when it comes to areas of improvement and I am not hesitant to share ideas or ask questions.
