Tampa General Hospital

Tampa General is a great place to work, depending on your manager. The floor I worked, Surgical-Trauma had an incredible manager who was understanding, skilled, patient, kind...the works. The rest of the team on that floor was great as well.

The patient load was heavy...trauma patients are no cakewalk. 4 patients could feel like 8 sometimes, and many patients...typically the most difficult ones, are there for weeks or even months. Meaning you may get that patient multiple times. This sometime caused anxiety. You never knew whether you were walking into a good, or bad, night at work. One thing though is that the teamwork is incredible on that floor.

Team meetings weren't great, as they were always scheduled either in the morning from 8-12, or in the afternoon from 1-5. Working overnights meant either having a 16 hour day, or coming into work at 1 and having to stay until the next morning. They were quarterly though, so can't complain too much, just a bit of a drag, especially if you were in the 1-5 group and had to work that night.

Company-wide, not a bad place. Plenty of opportunities to learn, move around, etc. In the year I was there I received free BLS, free ACLS, and had the opportunity to spend a day down in the ER starting IVs to gain some more skill at them. 

Every month they hold a birthday party for all the birthdays that month with good prizes. Holidays mean a publix giftcard in the couple hundred dollars range. They have an employee clinic on site where you can go when you're sick and need antibiotics, need vaccines, TB test, etc. They provide tuition, I was able to go to school for free for 2 semesters when I was there (and it was prepaid, so I didn't even have to pay for it out of pocket first). 

Decent compensation...not great, but not horrible either. Middle-of-the road. Difficult to move up...you can move laterally easily, but moving up can be hard just because they have so many employees who have been there for years upon years. Insurance benefits are good, they offer a lot of little ways you can lower your premiums. They also have a gym across the street that is super cheap. 

Parking sucks. If you work nights, you get an automatic parking pass to park in the on-site garage...but it costs you $10 a pay period.

If you work days, you have to park offsite (free) and take a shuttle in. You're put on a waiting list for the garage, but last I heard, it was at least a year's wait before you had any hope of getting a garage pass.

Also..don't work Gasparilla. Just...don't if you can help it. Working Fourth of July and New Year's is pretty cool though, as you have a great view of the fireworks.

Cafeteria is open to midnight, and the food is ok. During the day the selections are much more diverse. A little expensive for hospital food though. An entree, 2 sides, and a drink will run you about $10, and you don't get an employee discount.

I recently had the opportunity to work at TGH Corporate, and I must say that my experience was a mixed bag. While the company does offer some benefits and a decent work-life balance for medical staff, it falls short in several crucial areas that make it difficult to recommend.

Let's start with the positives. TGH Corporate does provide good benefits, especially for those working in the medical field. The healthcare packages and perks are commendable and can be attractive to potential employees. Additionally, the work-life balance for medical staff seems to be well-maintained, allowing them to manage their personal lives alongside their professional commitments.

However, the same cannot be said for IT workers or other non-medical staff. From my observations, these individuals often faced a toxic work environment, characterized by high levels of stress, poor communication, and an overwhelming workload. It seemed as though the company's focus was primarily on the medical side, while neglecting the needs and well-being of its IT staff and other departments. This discrepancy in treatment created an environment of resentment and frustration.

Moreover, TGH Corporate has a concerning habit of gatekeeping talented individuals. Instead of fostering a culture of collaboration and nurturing talent, the company appears to be more interested in maintaining the status quo. This stifles innovation and growth, leaving capable individuals feeling underutilized and undervalued. It's disheartening to witness the potential of talented employees being squandered due to the company's lack of support and encouragement.

Another significant drawback of working at TGH Corporate is the issue of compensation. Many employees, especially non-medical staff, reported feeling underpaid for the amount of work they were expected to do. The compensation packages offered to these individuals simply did not match their workload or the industry standards, creating a sense of dissatisfaction and leading to a high turnover rate.

In summary, while TGH Corporate may have its merits in terms of benefits and work-life balance for medical staff, it falls short in crucial areas that impact the overall employee experience. The toxic work environment, underpayment, gatekeeping of talent, and neglect of non-medical staff are issues that need to be addressed urgently. If you are considering a position at TGH Corporate, particularly in the IT or non-medical departments, I would strongly advise you to proceed with caution and thoroughly evaluate your options.

Food Service is garbage, most of what you find is packaged and refired if not done in bulk - typical corporate fashion. Back of House, management is ineffective in managing the employees they hire (scheduling is never an issue, a good note) the problem lies in WHO they staff - temp workers - they had to keep hiring new temps to replace the full time staff that leave, quit or get fired. Temps are lazy, petty, constantly on their phones and do NOT WORK, the full time staff HAS to train the temps themselves otherwise nothing will get done and management refuses to teach any of them basic sanitation procedures nor do they replace the staff they fire or have left. Forget about accountability (one of their hallmarks of their core values) none of upper management resolve issues and everything is on a Progressively Escalation policy in terms of discipline. You can be fired on a 2nd offense if you had another incident similar to the 2nd and all other offense count as objectively separate - but really - they look at that too and determine if they wish to keep you which escalates your infraction from a minor offense to a serious one. It is literally a LIE and the quickest way to be terminated if you think you have leniency because of this policy. This has gotten people seriously mad as more full timers leave in droves and temps come in by the truckloads. Favoritism is even worse, really big department - none of the help or support and maintaining machinery is even worse weeks or months to repair a 3rd party's own machine. Overall, not a great place to be if you intend to work hard and expect help getting trained and knowing what you need to do. Nobody will help you.   

First, I have nothing bad to say about the organization. They are wonderful caring people and will go above and beyond to help fellow TGH family and the community. Unfortunately, the cost of living in Florida, especially the Tampa area, is ridiculously inflated. The wage I received while working for TGH just simply was not enough to live on a single income. I had always wanted to work there and I tried to make it work, but even searching over and hour from the facility for housing that I could afford was met with defeat. So, I am writing this review not to criticize TGH, but to give anyone thinking of replying a honest and realistic view of what you may encounter. As a full-time nursing student with a demanding schedule and limited availability for things like OT the wage just was not enough to live in even meager conditions. The hospitals and other facilities in the area should and need to revise their pay scales to match the cost of living in the communities they serve. This is one of the reasons that nurses, PCT’s, and other disciplines decide to pursue travel opportunities instead. In the end, facilities pay out more to agencies to bring in staff, when if they would just pay their employees a fair wage so that they could live in the communities they love and serve their budgets would not be so stressed. TGH is an amazing organization and even though I was only there for a brief time I would more be than happy to return if I could afford too. 

I worked in the HR department at TGH for 2 years. I can honestly say that TGH has a very special company culture that embraces ALL people. I personally always felt welcomed, cared for, & valued as a team member. It really does feel like a second home to me. I found that TGH places high importance on work-life balance & they respect boundaries. It is so difficult finding a company who does that.
No HR department is perfect, but based on my lived experience, TGH is definitely making positive process improvements & changes. Some of these things are longer-term goals (such as reducing paper/waste) & simply do not happen over night. 
Newer employees do park off-site & I've seen a few complaints about it on here, but TGH is on Davis Island, which is already tiny to begin with & they have thousands of employees.....What do you expect? Other large hospitals have to do that too, so it's not uncommon. It comes with the territory.
TGH's HR department is definitely growing a lot these days, & evolving into a stronger team who can keep up with today's recruiting demands- not an easy task by ANY means. It is a very busy workload & it is certainly not for everyone. 
TGH truly is a huge advocate for growth & career advancement. They offer tuition/skills reimbursement, which I highly recommend! They really do invest in their current team members.  I can honestly say that their company culture truly reflects this. TGH even inspired me to take the next steps in my career to branch out into something other than HR! I am so grateful for the time I got to work at TGH. 

When I worked there, management had their favorite employees and had no problem showing everyone else who they were and how hard you had to kiss butt to keep up with those employees.  It was never about how well you did at your job, but how your job was perceived.  If the manager did not like you, it was perceived that your work was not up to par with those who were well liked by the manager.  Additionally, this was HOW you were rated when it came to your review for your raise.  You could present all the numbers in the world as to how you helped the company, but if your manager disagreed with those numbers because he perceived you didn't do well, then you received a bad rating and did not receive any compensation increases, like those he liked.  It was horrible knowing you could this hard and get nowhere in the company.  More unbelievable was the lack of desire for the managers to allow you to learn anything outside the scope of your job... Heaven forbid should you be able to assist others with their job should they be backed up and you have nothing to do that day.  The culture was not conducive to growing and/or moving up in the company, unless the manager loved you.  I would not return to work here, even if they paid $30 an hour.

Work begins quickly with most employees beginning at one of the five different Food serving lines serving breakfast items, and arrive with name tags and in clean uniforms which must be personally cleaned.  After a couple hours or so when the crowd dies down, employees, Chefs and supervisors gather to discuss the lunch/dinner menu at the non-commercial food stands, which changes daily.  Most of the costumers come down to the Dietary center to eat, but patients also make orders threw the hospital's catering department.  As such, balancing orders between the catering staff and the people standing right in front of you can be the hardest part of the job.  Servers can also get overwhelmed when particular customers (dealing with more serious problems) find any issue with their food.  It is very important to keep a positive and calm demeanor under these circumstances.  Management is especially focused on presentation and ensuring that patients and customers alike are well cared for because of this.  Employees are issued a hospital food card of $50 credit per week for their meals.  Attitudes among coworkers are usually a mixed bag, ranging from quiet and reserved to talkative and interpersonal.  Overall the Dietary Center in TGH operates like a restaurant.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The hospital was excellent, but the pharmacy department had significant operational and morale issues that made the work environment difficult despite the valuable clinical experience.

The most stressful part was working in a chronically understaffed environment where the workload was unrealistic and expectations stayed high regardless of staffing, coverage, or operational issues. It often felt like employees were expected to absorb constant pressure without adequate support.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environment was high-stress, reactive, and heavily driven by staffing shortages and constant operational pressure. Morale was often low, communication could be inconsistent, and the culture frequently felt more focused on maintaining output than supporting employees or creating a sustainable work environment.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A typical day involved nonstop workload, constant multitasking, staffing shortages, and trying to keep critical responsibilities covered while priorities continuously changed. Most shifts felt like operating in survival mode just to keep workflow moving and patient care from falling behind.

Worked here several years, over time it has become toxic and you can tell no one is happy on the Talent Management side of things, employees constantly complaining about their manager/director & lack of leadership. Employees overworked & Lots of favoritism goes on for promotions, people getting paid more than others that have worked in the organization longer in the same position, people who have been in the department less than a year getting promoted over those who have been there multiple years. Lots of politics going on within HR, so if you have time to be BFFs with your manager in & outside of work and be their “yes man” then this department is for you! It’s gone extremely downhill since I was hired, leadership doesn’t listen/do anything and it’s gotten to the point someone should bring it to the President/CEO. If you’re looking for growth, don’t come here either - they are never willing to work as a team (even though it’s one HR team) and never willing to cross-train their own employees. Would rather outsource. 

Management is pretty "hands off" until it comes to customer satisfaction reviews. Teamwork depends upon the cliques you are or are not in. Coworkers are allowed to be extremely lazy or the most hard working nurse in the unit, not usually any in between. And that includes ancillary staff.

The hardest part of the job is finding your niche and working hard for the patients that are in the unit/hospital to be taken care of and finding the support to do that.

The most enjoyable part of the job is the job itself and the learning that happens daily. Your patients are what you make of them; as is your environment. I have learned more from my patients, families, Jr doctors (residents), and my favorite attendings than I did in nursing school.

It is a tough place to work, but completely worth the time, energy, frustration, and effort. If you have the brains, backbone, and desire to make a difference even for only one patient then this is the place for you. Put on your learning cap and enjoy the diversity you will find at this hospital. I know I will never forget it, long for the days that I talked to "that" doctor, saved "that" patient, or taught "that" family about what was going on with their loved one.
