Texas Department of Public Safety

Meets and deals with the general public in professional and courteous manner; answers general questions pertaining to applications. Determines the legal needs and requirements of driver license and identification card applicants. Screens application forms to ensure applicant qualification. Performs basic check of physical driving capabilities of applicants by evaluation during observation and interviews applicants. Inspects motor vehicles for safety prior to road test, observes applicant during road test, independently scores applicant's abilities, and informs applicant in person of pass/fail status. Collects appropriate license fees and prepares receipts; ensures and accepts accountability that monies received balance with receipts issued; captures photograph of applicants, their signatures, and their thumbprints. Checks accuracy of original, renewal, and duplicate license applications, driver education certificates, school attendance forms, insurance documents, registrations, and notarizes forms; ensures source document data input to basic state records is correct to prevent future master record changes; and verifies and scrutinizes documents presented for authenticity. Administers and grades written and oral driver examinations. Screens application forms to ensure applicant qualification; prepares data cards and instruction permits; administers oaths as necessary. May travel as required to work in other Driver License Offices and/or to and from Headquarters for training, ,may set up, close, and program office machines in preparation or close of day’s activities. Prepares daily bookkeeping reports or bank deposits.

I coordinated with city, county, regional and state agencies throughout the State of Texas on developing terrorism-related training and exercises from 2002 until 2009, recruiting, and coordinating with the Texas Engineering Extension Services, National Response and Rescue Training Center to meet FEMA Consequence Management of Terrorism Grant program requirements.  During my 7 yrs I assisted, coordinated and brought over 500 exercises ranging from Tabletop, Functional, and Full-scale and well in excess of 1,000 free training courses throughout the State of Texas.  Almost every city, county, regional and/or state agency participated in one or more of my terrorism exercises.  In the later years I ultimately ended up being the person to coordinate on state-wide functional and full-scale hurricane exercises.  My average day consisted of calling local, and/or regional emergency management offices or agencies to offer them the opportunity of participating in one of my exercises and in return we would provide them multiple classes for their first responders that they then would apply their learned skills during these exercises.  I communicated with emergency management, public health, law enforcement, fire departments, mayors, judges and regional councils of government. There wasn't a single local, regional or state office or agencies that I did not and one time or another in 7 years speak to meet or get them involved in either my terrorism or hurricane exercises.

The weslaco district is ok but Too much micromanagement starting with the major and all the way down.. if ur a brown noser or are an interdictor then u have it made. U could make mistakes and they will cover you. The harder you work the more you get screwed. The lazier u are the easier u have it made so choose wisely. Very easy job over all just real stressful. Supervisors will counsel you for the littlest thing possible like insubordination. But the director always preached about "the department is not about numbers" yet weslaco district is ALL about numbers. Make sure you arrest enough drunks, and ticket speeders, seatbelt, and stop lots of CMVs because if not you WILL get a bad evaluation. So the insubordination starts with our major because he knows this very will but wont do anything about it. The brass forgot what it was like to be on the road, they have been behind a desk so long that they will hammer you for any little mistake. Some coworkers are awesome. mcallen has the worst supervisor and troops. Rio Grande city troopers on sullivan city will pull u over for no reason and make it up so watch out. So will edinburg. Other than that, the job is easy. Just work crashes and stop cars all day. You have a take home car. Also alot of wreck dodgers. I suggest go cve because those guys go to the POE undock there computer and go home. They do 5 inspections in 3 hours and claim 6 hours. Everyone in the valley knows that but they wont do anything. All they say is as long as you get ur inspections done. The inspectors at the poe bust there behinds on the inspections and the trooper gets the credit. Very unfair.

I joined DPS, specifically the Highway Patrol, early directly after the military, and initially, it was a good job, despite the fact I was away from home more with DPS than I ever was in the military. A good Sergeant and leadership and make or break the job and the promises of advancement are not what they seem. The schedule we worked around the Houston area was 2 weeks days, 2 weeks nights, one weekend off a month, which would usually be your long weekend. I participated in a handful of promotion boards to only find that the candidates had been "Pre-selected" prior to the board beginning. So, if you are someone who enjoys spending time with family, and not devoting all of your free time to DPS, you most likely will not be selected for promotion, as they know who they want before you step foot into the interview board. The department is very political and has many clicks, and reminded me of teenage girls in a locker room gossiping, most of the time. The job will wear you out. It will kill your marriage, it almost killed mine, but I was able to get out in time before it caused more damage to my family. It is no mystery that the DPS Highway Patrol turnover rate is crazy high. I think only about 20 troopers from my recruit school still work for the department, and mostly because they are now supervisors. Again though, the job can be fun, with great leadership, but unfortunately, there is still toxic leadership and those who are toxic being promoted into leadership positions. I wish you the best if you decide to take the oath and be a Texas State Trooper, it is a prestigious path to choose, but just understand what you may experience. 

I arrived at work at 7:45am to prepare and organize the CDL driving tests scheduled for the day.  My supervisor was very understanding, helpful and a good listening ear at any time.  I was honored to have her as my supervisor.  I preformed driving tests for classes A, B and C commercial drivers license.  I met new people everyday and heard new stories and achievements made with each person testing.  Knowing how much is on the line to pass this exam, makes the testing process very stressful for the examinee.  Before each test, I would conduct a inspection on each vehicle used to test. Checking tires, lights, air lines, and preforming air brake testing.  I gave clear specific instructions prior to starting the exam.  I would talk with the person testing, and make sure they know I was there to pass them and not to fail them.  The very nervous examinees, I would give them a little advice every now and them, knowing their nerves was getting the best of them.  I would mentor them and put them at ease through the entire test.  Not everyone passed, and at times I had them pull over and call a trooper to come and get me with the examinees instructor to drive the truck back.  I had to watch out for the safety of everyone else on the road, the examinee and myself.
I would help when needed in the office renewing, changing and giving a new license.  I also helped conduct the Class C driving tests as well.

I worked as the PBX / receptionist at the Texas Department of Public Safety.  My day consisted of answering and routing calls to various departments.  I duplicated crash reports and sold them to the public per request.  I maintained various spreadsheets and data to compose my end of the month reports.  I filed crash reports.  At the end of the day I did the bank deposit.  I learned a great deal about public safety and various organizations.  Our management team was the best I have ever worked for,  I learned the most from watching them at work.  The way they handled different situations that arose and their decisiveness in executing the decisions they made.  Their integrity is impeccable. The hardest part of the job was trying to get the public to understand i worked for the Highway Patrol and not  the Driver License Division. My desk was the very front of the office which is what the public saw first.  I enjoyed working to help people.  The only down side to my job was there was no room for advancement .  They implemented a new phone system which decreased my call volume by 70 percent and also implemented the Texas CRIS system to where crash reports were available for online purchase.  My job duties decreased dramatically and I needed to find a more challenging position,

DPS is your typical state/government job - low pay, rude customers, long hours, and constant change/instability. It seemed like policy changes were thrown at us every couple of months, meaning that employees and customers were always confused. 
Scheduling and hours were HORRIBLE! You come in super early and work until you're told you can go home (mandatory overtime). Every week, your schedule changes - sometimes you come in at 7:20 a.m., others you come in at 9:30 a.m. You never know when you will get to leave; it's always based on the number of customers who are waiting. You stay and work until the last customer is gone, and they are allowed to walk in up until the second before the posted closing time.  
Pay was definitely not in line with the cost of living. There is room for advancement, but it's really just a title change and small pay increase; you still do the same tasks and work the same terrible hours. 
One positive thing is that health insurance premiums are covered (for the employee only, not dependents). Dental insurance is offered for a very small fee. I was definitely appreciative of that. 
I met a few good friends there with whom I still keep in touch, most of whom also left the department.  I gained some experience and learned a few lessons during my tenure with DPS, but that is one place I would not advise anyone to work for unless they have no other options.

I was a License and Permit Specialist III. Overall the best company I’ve worked for. I was promoted after one year of working there after testing and passing exam. I worked with many different cultures and learned so much about those cultures. I started at the San Angelo office and they are BY FAR the best office out of the three I worked at. Everyone there is friendly and they all work as a TEAM. They are more like a family than colleagues. If you wish to promote quickly I would say you need to be at a bigger office like a huge city or a mega center. The reason I say this is because smaller offices the jobs you may want to get to are already filled and those people don’t plan on leaving anytime soon so it would be a long wait. You can transfer to any other office after a year with you supervisors approval of course and they are extremely helpful with that process. More mentally draining than everything because you have to remember a lot of details such as documents that they accept, forms, military details, and much more. Not physically demanding at all. 4 out of 5 stars. 

Let me start off by saying that my opinions do not reflect the overall demeanor of the entire organization. In fact TXDPS is an excellent provision by the state of Texas. If you ever have the opportunity to work within the organization. Pray you don't get assigned to Columbus, TX! Wendy Schmidt was my manager. She made my life a living stressed out nightmare. And I am convinced that she tampered with documents and did things just to make it seem as if I was inadequate for the job. Document would come up mysteriously missing from my packets I'd submit. She'd argue up and down it was my fault for not looking at details, but I knew that something fishy was going on. Still to this day I feel like something really strange was amidst when I worked there. I felt harassed constantly concerning my job performance. Little things too, for example she claimed I yawned to loud. Wendy Schmidt is not nice, and if anyone reads this from her district, I hope they investigate her and Stacey Alley. I am long gone from the state and quite frequently even the country, but it is a memorable time in my life having to put up with such a weird set of people.
