The Boiling Crab

A work environment with personality. The people that you work with makes it a huge hull into staying. You come together and meet people from different styles and personality that it infuses you to change into a higher tier of yourself. You're constantly learning new things from each person, and from that you can do anything but love them. The hardest part of the job is dealing with customers. Everybody has a certain threshold of being nice, but when it comes to being hungry, customers can be difficult. Having to put on a smile while the customer complains about the wait time or the repeated burden of "Where's my food?." After working here, I realized that I am not the same person. I became more patient and understanding. Even though some customers lie or try to cheat the system, I always stay composed and try to fix the problem. The best part of the jobs; of course, are the co-workers. You go through so much things with them, that it creates a strong bond with each of them. Other than that, I like to experiment with each new table that I serve. Depending on the situation, I put a twist when I serve a table. I can put on an accent and pretend to be someone else, or have some jokes and gestures to lighten up the tensity of waiting hours to finally dine in. Because..being bland and a robot shows that you don't really care about your job or the customer.

If I could, I would recommend everybody to at least work in a restaurant for a part of their lives. People need to understand the food and hospitality business, also customer service.

My experience working at the boiling crab was very challenging , especially coming from someone who experiences mental illness. I experienced a lot of social anxiety there, and they weren't accommodating nor to my disability or to the fact that I struggle retaining information about the menu. The management team was very unfriendly and hostile they continued throughout my experience to favorite certain workers there, there was no communication, no teambuilding activities no solid, healthy work environment. It was mostly just hostile and unfriendly and unwelcoming to the point where I did not  enjoy work there , I dreaded going to work every single day I didn't get paid enough, I didn't get enough serving shifts, and when I did get serving shifts, it felt as though I was in competition with other servers to make tips.  Overall my experience there was displeasing and took an entire toll  on my mental health and overall well-being and not only is the food extremely expensive but the customer service is extremely lacking and the management team doesn't care about their employees. 

Working at Boiling Crab was very hectic and on-your-feet learning. The managers at this location were very communicative and interesting to talk to. It bothered me that the managers had told us it would take 3-6 months to move up as a server; however, the people i got hired with became servers much later. Even worse, there were people who were hired based on recommendations from friends that were already working at that location who were promoted to server within two months. The hardest part of the job is dealing with the stress from both guests, the kitchen staff, the managers, and other coworkers. Sometimes it doesn't feel like a team, but rather, everyone's trying their best NOT to screw up. The most enjoyable part of the job would be how good the food taste and talking to customers

During covid, we got a $2 raise in paychecks, and I don’t know any other restaurant that pays that much. Pre-covid, servers made $25-$40/hr in just tips. During covid, we made $10-$40/hr. Money was great overall. 

If you work at the Burbank location, there is obvious favoritism between management and a couple employees. These employees will pick up food and coffee for managers and will ALWAYS get their requested time off approved. If anyone else were to request time off, even months in advanced, you would most likely get declined. The “favorites” openly use their cellphones in front of managers and managers do not care.

Management likes to stand around and boss you around instead of actually helping. 

Everyday was fast-paced, never ceasing to keep going, but with a great team at your side the days did not seem so difficult. I learned to further my communication skills both with customers and especially with my coworkers and management. I learned how to handle demanding customers and work between deadlines that needed to be done. The management was the best part of the company, it felt like a family. The hardest part of the job was dealing with customers, but it teaches you patience and the ability to communicate in any situation. The greatest part was the team and family environment you get from working with each other.

It's not a bad place to start working and getting restaurant experience. It can get super busy and hectic during the weekends. However, management was terrible. Every manager has their favorites, especially the general manager. They make up rules as they go and change the rules whenever they want to. Also, very inconsistent with scheduling and how they deal with customer complaints. Tips weren't that great either since everyone pools tips and we would get parties of 20+ with no tip, not even instant gratuity. On the bright side, coworkers are great and are all hard workers. 

The atmosphere of the Boiling Crab was pretty friendly and welcoming at times. I worked a lot with the same coworkers so I was able to bond very well with those people. I am very good friends with some of them to this day. The pay is also pretty neat in exchange however for an excellent work ethic during operational hours. That is a given. It can get very busy very fast and sometimes it can be very stressful. They also demand a considerable amount of your time. They require 2 days out of the weekdays for work and your weekends are non existent. It works well for those with school schedules and they are very flexible in that regard. Overall excellent place to work. 

Just to clear things up, pay is pretty good for a restaurant job. While COVID is going on, they give you $16/hr instead of minimum wage, and all tips are shared with the front of house staff. 
But, they are really understaffed. I feel like it could be a good work environment if there were enough people. The people there were really nice, and most of the managers were great, but because I was doing the work of five people for one person's salary, I left. I hope they get more staff so their team isn't so stressed out.

A shift typically starts a little later in the day and ends late. All opening duties are completed before opening hour, vice versa for closing duties. The business requires excessive amount of teamwork in order for it to run smoothly. Co-workers are always considerate and is willing to lend a hand when needed. It's a small business, so it gets busy quick and it lasts throughout the day. This can cause delays to the operation such as computer glitches, orders backed up, complaints, etc., therefore it's important to understand and perform quality customer service.

If you are a college student, this is such a great job opportunity. It is flexible, good pay and overall friendly environment to work at. You can make your way up to a server and even eventually a shift lead. What you put in is the product of what you can gain from working here. With the help from management and fellow colleagues, you will grow your interpersonal and customer service skills as well as multitasking and working under stressful environments. They definitely train and prepare you enough to succeed in this job. I highly recommend.
