The Boston Home is a nationally renowned and forward-thinking center for care of people with progressive neurological diseases, mostly Multiple Sclerosis. It's really loved by the people who know it and residents are happy to be here because there is a lot for them to do, a supportive community, and excellent medical care. There is also a day program and increasingly services for the public.

Staff are specialist in their field, kind, friendly and there is minimal turnover. The leadership cares and is involved and on top of things -- it's a remarkably well-run place. 

Medical professionals, students, and researchers come from all over the country and world to collaborate with The Boston Home and learn the best ways to care for younger people in longterm care, people with MS, etc. It's an innovative place that puts the resident and his or her independence at the center.

There are a number of staff training opportunities during the year (and a fun and elaborate employee appreciation week) as well as support and recognition that working with people with progressive disease can be stressful and hard.

If you are great at what you do and are positive and love people, this could be a great fit for you. Patience, kindness, and honesty are key qualities for the people who work out well, which means they are really nice people to work with. The campus is beautiful and has a lot of parking and is near the Ashmont T station.

People see residents in wheelchairs and always ask if it's depressing to work here, but it's the opposite. Residents are inspiring and when you see what they can do through the extra effort of The Boston Home (like paint watercolors or zip around the building and grounds independently in a customized wheelchair even if they are paralyzed from the neck down), you appreciate every day of life all the more. The philosophy and focus on living a meaningful life here applies to staff as well as residents.

It's the best run place I've ever worked.

My job was housekeeping. It was my first time working in housekeeping and the popular phrase there was are you working hard or hardly working? lol, how true it was since it was always hard to tell. It will feel hard at times and for long periods doing nothing afterward but walking around till there is something to do again. It was an ok place for those with no work experience. good to work there for a while to build up experience then transfer or find a workplace somewhere else. Glad I was able to find a job and my boss was awesome and kind to me there. some of the coworkers who were there a long time not so much.  I worked 9 months part-time weekends. I could have stayed but I wanted out and another job thinking anything was better than this. I wasn't used to dealing with people's attitudes and their impressions stayed but the residents were very kind and helped me to continue long as I did.

We like to call ourselves a Wheelchair Community even though we are licensed as a skilled nursing home. Our 96 residents really do call this HOME and while they all are paralyzed and wheelchair dependent, together with our staff they have recreated a life worth living with new interests, new friends, reconnections to old friends and interests, and family life that is not based upon caregiving 24/7. Our staff turnover rate is less than 10%, We had a perfect DPH score and most of our managers have been here for 10 years or longer. Wonderful doctors who listen and are available. Lots of opportunity to use your creativity. We are a teaching facility with students from a variety of disciplines and are dedicated to promoting excellence in the care of persons with MS in all settings. You really can make a difference here.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The staff were very supportive and nice as much as the patient they were always graceful and more importantly respectful.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Not being able to finish a task in the timely manner that I wanted.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The staff wee nice and warm very supportive of each other and would go beyond to help and welcoming you.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A typical would be arriving at the nursing station getting your assignment, locate your patient and start working. Some patient like to be up and running as soon as 8am in an early shift.

Residents of this facility are all dependent on wheelchairs for mobility and require moderate to max assist with care.  Staffing levels reflect those needs.  Lots of support staff and engaged families. Not a lot of admissions and discharges so you get to know residents well.  Nursing students and therapy students provide additional attention to residents and opportunities for you to share your knowledge and skills.  Lots of attention to continuing education for staff.  Staff always have good quality medical supplies accessible.

What is the best part of working at the company?
I loved the residents and staff. What a hard decision to leave but my health comes  first. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Very busy role but always gave my best effort to do the best that I could.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Very family oriented. Everyone always asking how you are especially the residents.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Education, orientation and rounding on units to see educational needs

I worked at TBH for 3 years and unfortunately it was my time to go. My typical day would consist of responding to residents, greeting visitors, faxing and filing. I met some great people there and till this day we are still friends. The residents always put a smile on my face due to how strong they were, I have also witnessed some deaths but those who lost the battle are in a better place. The hardest part of this job was making sure you're covered and all appointments were scheduled on time and the patients made it to every appointment.

I love the Boston and i enjoyed every time of my work there . They helped me when i needed them the most. But unfortunitely due to the change in my life and family size i have decided  to move out of state . This is  what causing me now to look for another job. It is a very good and educative skilled facility to work at. I will be glad any time to go back to work for them if i decide to move back to Massachusetts.

When you can help a resident when they ask you for something and your able to help them once you find out they can have it. Being able to put a smile on their faces make me feel like a completed a double shift. Just to see them smile makes me feel happy and I love to work with people that have an issue and I can help them.

Co- workers, and management take care of themselves. They don't thoroughly address co-workers mistreating fellow co- workers. They turn a blind eye, just pretend to help. Nothing will change, stressful work environment, because of poor HR hiring, and handling of passive-aggressive behavior.
