Let's introduce the pros of working for CHCS since there's not many. The pay is not necessarily bad, it's just not exactly equivalent to the amount of work and trainings that you do. There are benefits which is definitely a plus, but the insurance doesn't cover much and can get very expensive depending on your specific family needs. It is good experience. Everyone always told me "if you've worked for the Center, you can work anywhere". Lastly, it is very easy to befriend your coworkers because everyone is stressed and hates working there, so you all have something in common. Now let's get into the cons. Very poor management. The management was definitely the primary reason I quit working at CHCS. They listen to your concerns and promise change, but you are left with many broken promises. A lot of them are also very unprofessional and probably shouldn't be in a management position. If you do take a position at CHCS just remember that management will not have your back. Everyone fins for themselves. They also don't really care for their employees like they should. They are very short staffed because their turnover rate is approaching 50 percent and so the job is very stressful and it doesn't get much better. There are also a lot of trainings that you are expected to complete. Some of the trainings are online and some of them are in person. If the trainings are not completed by the deadline there are consequences. CHCS also makes it very difficult for their clients to become successful in their recovery because it is very hard to get in and get an appointment and if they are not keeping up with their appointments, they are put on walk-in status. Employees are always leaving for better opportunities and everyone is pretty much replaceable. I hope this helps for anyone who is considering working at CHCS. If you do take the position, do not work at the Zarzamora clinic, which is soon to be relocated across the downtown UTSA campus.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Coworkers. They are your primary  support and  only source for training. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Supervisors do NOT know how to do the job of the staff they supervise therefore they cannot provide adequate support. This is a long-standing trend at this company. This is the primary reason for CHCS’s abysmal retention rate. Some departments are down 20+ staff members. As the local MHMR CHCS should not be referring clients into the community for help but they have to because there are not enough frontline employees. Some departments have more supervisors than direct contact staff. This is a gross misappropriation of county funds and resources,

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Unforgiving, punitive, retaliatory and petty. 
The company is in a never ending episode of The Emperor’s New Clothes. When you alert leadership (at all levels) to problems at best you are ignored and at worst you get a target painted on your back.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Back to back clients, increasingly demanding work rules, a constant barrage of emails praising new programs and grants while core departments like children’s are sinking and unable to provide fidelity of services due to lack of understanding and support. Management directives are rarely consistent and there is very little support for situations that fall outside the norm; supervisors have neither the experience or knowledge to provide sound directives for crisis situations, especially in the children’s departments.

This is the worst agency that I have ever worked for. Deplorable management with Axis I and II diagnoses as they display paranoid behaviors when they feel you know more than they do. At times it was difficult to tell if you were working under the clients supervision or management as I was tempted to complete uniform assessments and incorporate treatment plans for management. Of the past four years of working with this agency I have seen great case managers get run off by management because of the case managers refusal to commit Medicaid fraud by working off the clock to complete notes at home. If you have any suggestions on how to improve the program then you are now an enemy because case management are NOT supposed to have any opinions or suggestions which once again raises the paranoia in management. The CEO is just as clueless as the management he has over the various programs as in his mind the clients are receiving quality services when that is clearly NOT the case. Mediocre services are being provided to the clients as Medicaid continues to be billed for maximum services provided. There's absolutely no room for advancement unless you are a bona fide brown noser by being a puppet for management and backstabbing coworkers and report back to management on coworkers whereabouts. Overall if looking for employment I would highly encourage to NOT apply with this agency because you'll find yourself running out the door faster than you did applying for employment there...

What is the best part of working at the company?
The Lar/Consumers , learning what working for the State is about and all the changes. Meeting new personalities and knowing you can be of service.  
Knowing there is a reason for this journey each day given.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Staffing is terrible and having to work under building conditions that mist do not. Not very clean.  Knowing that the staff higher up to Present SEEM to not care.  But at the end of the day one can not change anything and tomorrows  are the same.
But I have a responsibility to my Lar/Consumers and office I work in makes life so much better to over look other things forgotten. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The culture is written in black and white and is not a true bakance... so again it is what is written.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
My day begins rushed as Lar are asking questions before you cab even clock In. There is no true training here. I make the best with a smile,to go over and beyond to improve the customer service with the knowledge/ experience of years past. Listening and have empathy are best friends. Spanish speaking is easier while listening. Closing all with Thank you,  smile , and correct information for these clients ( Behavioral challenges) is best.
I like my position because I make a difference.

I got experience working in a healthcare setting from this job about a year and half. However, favoritism and nepotism is very blatant and apparent in the work environment especially for promotion. Benefits are lack luster and don't have flexible options and the buildings are old and worn down as well. Co-workers are great but shady stuff goes on around management level in regards to communication across all departments which turns into the blame game. Every meeting it's about clinical staff angry about the scheduling department regarding their ever so changing regulations that makes it difficult for patients to receive care and medications. You're helping patients but you're not really helping people if you catch my drift. You have to take days off for your mental health because everyone on the phone including clinical staff is yelling at you and giving you problems. Also, you do more than what you're paid for unfortunately but you learn some extra skills though. My energy was erased and dreaded going to work after my year mark until I quit last year so I can focus on school.

I appreciate being part of a company that values flexibility and employee well-being. Programs like telework and the ability to bank extra hours show that the organization understands the importance of work-life balance. Having the option to work remotely helps employees stay productive while also managing personal responsibilities more effectively. It also reduces commuting time and stress, which can make a big difference in overall job satisfaction and energy levels.

Another benefit is the opportunity to bank extra hours worked beyond the standard eight-hour day. Being able to save up to 24 hours and use them later is very helpful. It allows employees to handle appointments, personal matters, or unexpected situations without always needing to use leave. This kind of flexibility shows trust between the company and its employees, and it encourages people to stay engaged and committed to their work.

Overall, I feel that policies like these contribute to a supportive and modern work environment. They demonstrate that the company is willing to adapt and provide practical solutions that benefit both employees and the organization. I look forward to continuing to contribute to the team and growing within a workplace that values flexibility, productivity, and employee satisfaction.


CHCS, in general, is an incredible organization working hard to treat uninsured people with mental health issues.  They constantly work under increasingly difficult conditions as their budget gets repeatedly cut.  They look for creative ways to use the money they have to serve as many people as they can.  

One department in CHCS that tends to be somewhat overlooked is the Substance Abuse Department.  Substance Abuse is the step-child of mental health anyway.  During the time I worked in the Substance Abuse Department, the director was an incredibly hard working and strong woman who attempted to hold together the department and keep it a cohesive unit functioning efficiently and effectively to serve the clients.  We greatly increased the number of clients we served in all of the units under her supervision while dealing with budget decreases.

The administration made some major changes along with radical budget cuts from the Texas Government.  I am no longer working there, I'm sad to say, but their mission continues.  My heart remains with them and I'd like to think that one day I will return to work there.

I started my position as a Care Manager excited to serve families and their children. Within one week of working, I noticed that my immediate supervisor did not have any experience being a supervisor, as she went up the ladder through another friend/colleague who got her that position. She would micromanage daily, her emails were very passive aggressive, she would pile on work and expect it to be completed on her timeline. Leadership did not support the CM's; they were hardly available when needed and would be stuck on TEAMS meetings or in their dark offices all day. CM's would get in trouble for staffing with other CM's about clients. They did not appreciate any feedback we gave them, as they took it personally. They would pack your schedule with back to back appointments, hardly leaving you with time to use the bathroom. They did not interact with staff. The families I did have the opportunities to serve were amazing! The kids were great and interactive in their skills sessions. However, I would not recommend working at the Bandera Clinic, as they have lost almost 20 CM's in the last 2 years. That alone should say something about Leadership/Management. 

The Company itself is a great company to work for. I love what they do for our Community and for patients with Mental Health issues.The pay is great as well as the benefits. The clinic I worked for, the Management sucked. They were never in the office when needed. Too many "personal" problems kept them away from the office; or they just came in on an "as needed" basis using "meetings @ Central" as their excuse. If there was a crisis, and Management was not around, office staff better have taken care of it correctly or else. Management was VERY CLIQUISH and fake. They acted like they cared but went around talking about employees behind their backs. Case Managers were expected to do so much work within the 8 hour day-which was nearly impossible given the amount of patients they saw throughout the day and their Supervisor never had a kind word to say, but he sure knew how to cut them down for not meeting their numbers. And absolutely NO OVERTIME. If you can find a clinic to work for who has caring, level-headed, intelligent Management, this company is great to work for. GOOD LUCK with that.

Depending on the department you’re in it depends on the workload you have. The department I was in did not have a high caseload compared to others. Majority of the reviews are correct about CHCS. They do value clients over staff. Their system changes constantly because they are trying to make sure the billing is correct. The training sucks for the most part once you’ve completed training, good luck out there. There are so many supervisors but no staff. The department I was in my supervisor was nice, however I had to clean up after their mistakes constantly. After multiple complaints nothing was addressed. If you join this company document EVERYTHING! Every email sent, client interaction, discussion about a client with your supervisor, etc. my co workers really made the work environment so much better. The flexibility is amazing. Benefits are okay. You are micromanaged constantly and questioned about how you serve the client. CHCS is a great starting point, however don’t stay here forever.
