The Centers

It is important to understand that the facility I am currently working with is a behavioral hospital. With this, a typical day at work is full of crises, which generally lead to several calls for other staff to assist in calming and de-escalating patients who are acting out-of-control behavior. In this job, what I have learned among others is endurance - being patient with people who are going through tough and rough moments. The management does not care about the workplace pressure, which the lower level personnel face each day. They are a collection of extraordinary workers whose dedication, team work spirit, and commitment to the patients and the organization are simply obvious. The hardest part of my job is when the staff are ordered to place a patient in seclusion. The most enjoyable part of my job is the realization that I am helping a person to achieve his/her highest level of functioning within the general population. In summary, it is an interesting experience caring for those who cannot, under normal circumstance, care for themselves because of their disabilities.

Having a hard working coworkers made the job bearable.The workload became overwhelming and there was no raise given.There was favoritism and sexism from the supervisor . The supervisor also was controlling and advised us to ask permission when having to use the bathroom or to get a doctors note. The supervisor was also absent  alot (come in late or leaving early). She would say she is salary so she can flex time. However threatened to write staff up from coming in at 8:02am and had everyone in the office sign a verbal write up. She would also have inappropriate meetings in her cubicle instead of her office and we could hear private conversations when other staff shared their thoughts and concerns which created tension in the office among staff. She also gossiped with other staff about other employees.

Management is company minded, employees are a distant 3rd thought.  Long hours expected from management and clinicians preferences have no bearing on work schedule, many are forced by management to work 4 ten hour days. Since working no one has recieved a raise.  Upper management is very unstable there has been three clinical directors in a year and a half.  As a result paperwork, policy, and procedures change regularly, at times weekly.  The main focus is on productivity.  Burn out rates are high, hence having five superiors in only one and a half years of working at company.  Benefits have high co-pays and you have to wait a year for dental benefits.

typical day visits to school and home.Love my clients as  well they did. they waited for me.Still when I see parents they let me know how much they missed me and that how much I help them. I learned how to write specific reports..Workplace it was normal,always the  jealousy from other departments..the hardest part was having a Supervisor that did not know what she was doing, she had no knowledge in the matter. she was always asking for help and at the end with a bunch of lies the Centers fired me.After I left most of my co-workers left.Administration did not give me an opportunity to express myself because she was there.The hardest was was to deal with difficult parents.For me I enjoyed working with the clients and see their progress.

A typical work day would start by receiving report from the previous nurse, then making my rounds before giving the doctor a summary of the findings and report received from the nurse. I was new to psychiatric nursing, so working here allowed me to understand and deal with the various personalities we encounter each day. I managed at least 25-30 patients a day along with 1 LPN and 4 mental health techs. The hardest part of my day was trying to complete the non electronic notes on all patients by the end of the day. The most enjoyable part of the day was to see patients who came in mentally unstable or under the influence of substances, are able to go home. Their appearance are of a normal person.

Efficiently completed clerical work such as Q15 documents on each patient under care, incident reports disciplinary notes charting inventory vital signs and other various healthcare documents. Displayed an understanding of the basic concepts of safe supportive nurturing therapeutic human interactions. Actively supervised and administered therapeutic recreational educational and group activities. Facilitated experiential learning and therapeutic activities for diverse clientele. I learned  de-escalated  interactions when needed utilizing proper verbal and non threating techniques. The hardest part of the job was harmful behaviors to self and others. enjoyable part was free lunch.

I was responsible for maintaining the well-being and security of the clients and help them to reduce the effects of their mental illness and substance abuse. From time to time I was doing the transportation from the Center to other locations or vice versa.
I never had any problem with my co-workers, it was always pleasant to work with them. I really enjoy working with such clients, they need help and I love helping people. Unfortunately at that time we had problems with the management, bad management, so sometime this caused us problems to do our work properly, too many times the clients were neglected. The rate of employee turnover was very high.

I enjoyed my time at The Centers. The staff became as a family. Had the position not been eliminated, I would have chosen to retire from there.The client care is exceptional, but the clients need to be able to depend on a consistency in employees that was not afforded. Due to budgetary constraints, many positions were not refilled, so the hardest part of the job was absorbing the duties of all the staff that were either let go, or left for other opportunities. The most enjoyable part of the job was feeling that you made a positive difference in the lives of the clients/patients.

The workload was unbearable and lack of work life balance 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
There was lots of talk about creating a great culture but it fell short. Upper management was very detached from the rest of the organization.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
The days were nonstop. Priorities changed daily but you were expected to get everything done despite the overwhelming workload

The best part about this job is the people that I work with, they were patient, and willing to teach you if you are willing to learn. It is a great place to start a career. It can be difficult to move up in the company to gain supervisory experience if you are wanting to move up not higher levels of the company. It is great to gain hands on knowledge of mental health diagnosing and crisis intervention in the inpatient hospital. It is rewarding to be able to help people and their families in crisis and see them learn more about themselves and their strengths. It is a very fast pace environment.
