The Christian Broadcasting Network

I was a member of the television crew as a on call staff member for a year and a half.  I will say the pay for freelance/ on call's is decent 15/hour. But what I quickly noticed was that there was clear bias among the management. For the first few months when I got hired I rarely if ever got called and priority went to other on calls. When I was called in, I never truly felt comfortable there even though I am a Christian myself and CBN is suppose to be full of Christian employees. I can't really explain it but there was just an awkward tension in the air and it just never felt Christian like to me. Granted, there were a few very friendly people who DID seem like nice people  and who were Christian like.

But honestly, the thing that ticked me off an made me walk away from the on call position was the bias and favoritism among management. During my year and a half at CBN, I showed up 98% of the time I was called and no one EVER told me I did a bad job or anything. Many times I directly mentioned that I was looking for something full time and my goal was to hopefully get hired full time with the production staff. But they hired a young lady nearly a year  after I started as a on call. The old men in management instantly showed bias towards her ( I am a male). So naturally, they overlooked ME and gave her a full time position. The really bad part is they NEVER even tried to let me know about the position. They knew from the outset they were going to give her any full time position that would come up and leave me as an on call.

 I also encountered plenty of former employee's who mention bias and favoritism in management, random layoff's etc. It's sad a "Christian" company does some of the things it does here.

I had a bad experience as a NOC (Network Operations Center) Tech I. A normal day consisted of living in your email inbox, filling out reports, and monitoring the network infrastructure for alerts and escalating as needed. I had no previous IT experience, but had multiple certifications that prepared for me the job. I thought I would do well.

Without going into too much of the dirty details, I was told from the beginning that a training program was not in place and they were using me as a means of formulating one, specifically I was a "guinea pig". Being passionate about IT but not having any practical experience and not enough sufficient time for one-on-one training prepared me for failure. They developed a training curriculum more than half-way through my training period. My team was very strict and unforgiving no matter how hard I tried to correct my mistakes. It was a very awkward situation and they realized 90 days in they needed someone with experience. By the end, I felt confused by their ambiguity and was never told directly why I was let go. 

Each department in CBN is different, even different departments within IT. I would only recommend joining CBN IT with previous experience unless you start at help-desk. In their defense, the NOC team was small and very busy (I enjoy hard work), but I would have thought more grace would be given, especially from a Christian company. You just never know sometimes. 

Be prepared to work hard. Don't let the initial friendliness fool you. Every inch of your work from how well you troubleshoot to how well you listen and follow directions will be scrutinized and evaluated then re-evaluated by your manager and your team.

CBN has a great environment, as long as you're making them money and you're getting results. I worked there for 6 months, and all I saw was a lot of delegating and finger pointing for problems that arise. The IT department is underwhelming, and that's putting it nicely. They're not interested in problem solving, they're just punching in and out like a 24/7 prayer center is a 9-5 job. They don't work weekends or evenings, and 2nd shift is left to deal with the unresolved problems. This must be a punishment from God, because they also peddle a prosperity gospel, and decree and declare things done "in Jesus name." However, it's empty promises given to people. Thousands of people call for prayer, and they train their agents to basically lie and give people false hope. This tarnishing the name of Jesus and giving people an unnecessary stumbling block to the gospel. They're lying to people, because according to CBN, as long as you say you're a Christian, you're ok with them. They claim that their number one goal is to share the gospel with people, but which gospel? Management is ignorant and stiffens up at any change. They are more than happy to send people to another area or department, because they don't want to deal with conflict or complaints. False happiness, none of it is real

Don't work here if you truly love the Lord, and want to actually see any fruit of your labor. The only fruit I see at CBN is rotten.

There were pros and cons here. Met some really great and hard working people and management treated us like people by working around any personal conflicts that they could and this was appreciated. I do believe most of management had good intentions, but our department and surrounding departments just did not run efficiently. There was a lack of communication between managers of different departments about due dates and this led to consistently barely meeting or missing deadlines. When this would happen, instead of trying to improve efficiency and hold realistic expectations for deadlines, managers would just ask for people to work overtime. Witnessed several managers from surrounding departments using spirituality to try to get people to work more overtime which felt manipulative and wrong. I do believe most people meant well here, but there are some issues that management refused to address. The pay is much lower than similar roles at competing companies and we were often asked to take on many extra responsibilities without any compensation. The stressful work environment from too many responsibilities and trying to meet impossible deadlines had many people searching for new jobs. I do think they are overall a good company so I hope they will address these issues and improve. 

Wonderful place to work.  The people who help make up the company provided a safe and friendly atmosphere.  Management was for the most part in touch with those that reported to them.  Always had an open door policy.  Believed in team work and a unified front.  The hardest part of the job was making sure that all deadlines were met in a fast paced environment.  The most enjoyable part of the job was knowing that everyone band together for one common purpose and that was to serve the partners and meet the needs as they arise effectively and efficiently.  In my almost 21 years at CBN I have learned that people from all walks of life are loving, caring, considerate and most accommodating.  I have learned that you can have a family outside of your own biological family.  I have learned patience and understanding is truly a  virtue. (smile) And, that  sometimes doing a service is more  rewarding than a take home pay. (But it don't hurt to have the  money).

Upper management runs the department   through threats, intimidation, and fear. A simple mistake or disagreement on how a situation is handled  gets blown out of proportion and you get written up for it.  This includes getting yelled at by multiple supervisors with threats of being terminated and them not forgetting about what happened but use it to hold over your head in the future.  You can’t even explain or stand up for yourself when scrutinized without getting shouted down.   This explains the extremely high turnover rate for such a small department. Therefore, this forces officers and dispatchers to work mandatory overtime which burns them out and getting leave requests disapproved, even when put out months in advance.  There has also been certain levels of corruption swept under the rug due to favoritism.  Overall, good people get treated poorly here which is sad for a “Christian Environment.”

Managed a great team of supervisors, trainers, and partner service representatives. Went into work each morning and met with the Vice President, Director, and others on the management team. We discussed daily business activities , operations, and had frequent meetings regarding goal achievements, personnel decisions, new training initiatives. 

It was a pleasure working with all of my co-workers including the out of state branch of the organization. Our management team and its team members were cohesive, everyone on the same page, and everyone working together to reach the organizational daily and monthly objectives.

The hardest part of the job - there was none. Enjoyed every aspect of the job.

The most enjoyable aspect - the people, we really became a family.

This is So NOT  a Christain environment. Pay is not enough for all that you have to go through... It's such a fake and judgemental place. You can be the most loyal and dependable  employee there and never complain, Not to mention one of if not the best performer in your department. But literally the first time you want to express how you feel and they don't like it. They will go from giving you hours to cutting them to little to no hours and then let you go without any notice.... But will tell you....that they don't have any work for you. When in fact they have already hired someone to fill you're spot. If you are a creative person and one who would address issues, when you are feeling disrespected. All so that you can have an healthy work environment. This is I repeat this is NOT the work place for you. Nothing about most of the people or this place is Christian like.

Imagine all of the worst components of working in a call center, and then add the factor of this being a PRAYER based call center. 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, representatives take calls from all over the country. Specifically, the workers are expected to pray for the callers. Numerous prayer requests flood in. Workers can take as many as 50 to 150 prayer requests per shift ranging to the harmless blessings for a person's well being, to the harrowing domestic situations, cancer patients, suicide attempts, etc.

It is intense and emotionally taxing, but management expects you to take it all in stride and basically churn out prayers like an automaton. Unless you are capable of being insensitive to those in need, and simultaneously being verbally abused by the more entitled members of society, I would recommend looking elsewhere for employment.

I have worked with CBN for over 2 decades in the Prayer Center (24x7 contact center). I lead teams and a typical day is spent supporting team members, conducting and attending a chapel, strategizing how to achieve the best morale and productivity from our current resources, how to grow our staff count, and finding the best tools and processes so we can work in excellence and feel great about the work we do. I collaborate with an awesome leadership team and, in my role, have a lot of freedom to structure my tasks, meetings, and schedules in way that balances the ministry and my personal life. (Not every role has that level of flexibility.)
