I have worked at GWUH for many years. What has kept me there so long are the opportunities for education and the wonderful nurses. However, the corporate suite executives are unrealistic with their demands on the nursing staff. Specifically, patient flow is more a responsibility of the nursing staff than the physician staff somehow — even though it is only physicians who can write discharge orders. Pay increases are slow, as the CEO does not wish to have a “bidding war” with other hospitals. However, more money elsewhere is what draws the wonderful nurses away from this hospital. There need to be across the board hourly rate raises to retain good nurses and create loyalty. A lot of the “Gen Z” nurses don’t care as much about a 401k as they do an hourly wage that allows them to travel freely on their off time. The corporate suite really needs to hire a 3rd party specialist to help them understand how to connect with and retain nursing staff. There is a lot of distrust between the c-suite and nursing staff that was exacerbated during covid. A lot of the problems were there even prior to covid and I believe are related to a shift in nursing culture that hospital executives were in denial about for a long time. Nurses no longer really accept being treated like doormats, they expect more. 

I was a staff RN in this high risk perinatal unit where we cared for pregnant women during their difficult and problem pregnancies in the antepartum period as well as during the labor and delivery and post partum periods. Some of the infants born were able to room in with their mothers after birth, others were required to go to the NICU.

We also served parents who were experiencing normal pregnancies and offered labor-delivery-recover-and postpartum rooms for that experience. As one of the staff RN's I was well qualified, and thoroughly enjoyed, all aspects of this experience with these patients, both in their physical care and in the teaching and learning aspects of the process of birthing and caring for a newborn.

This was probably my favorite job and I would truly love to go back to part time nursing in the perinatal area, although I don't think I would like to do it full time any longer. PRN or part time would be perfect. It has been a few years, but I have thoroughly reviewed two recent text books on Maternal Child Nursing in recent weeks.

Avoid this place at all costs. Yes, it’s a decent teaching hospital but that is about it. Most of your co-workers are great but the hospital takes advantage of them. 

Management is awful and there is high turnover (people coming and leaving about every 3 months). On the PACU/Pre-op floor there is only one person who is considered full time staff. The rest are travelers. 

Every floor in this hospital is understaffed (some worse than others). The Pre-op floor usually has 3-5 nurses for 50+ patients which is extremely unsafe. PACU/pre-op floor manager is under par and rude. Most of the time floor admin have to step in and cover due to the floor being so understaffed. Additionally, people are being asked to do things that they are not contracted to do (work on certain parts of the floor they never agreed to work in). 

On top of that, several GI doctors left due to mistreatment by management. Everyone there wants to leave as soon as they get there. There are several mistakes that happen (there was a patient with the wrong identification band on them post-op). You are over worked and underpaid. Do not work here…

Through different committees, I learned the details that made my job more interesting and rewarding. In the Customer  Service Excellence Committee I learned skills to deal with different situations and defuse situations between patients and staff. I learned how to listen to problems, examine evidence, and reach solutions based on my findings. These experiences will eventually help our management to create policies to avoid these situation from repeating. In turn these policies will make us more focused in our work to better serve our patients.
In the Laboratory Safety Committee we worked closely with the Laboratory Safety Department, and our job was to evaluate laboratory equipment for safety and efficacy. We were also made aware of the many risks, both chemical and biological and will work close to our supervisors to enforce regulations to make our workplace safe and accident free.

I worked on the heart floor for twelve years and there were many opportunities to interact with the physicians, students, nursing students, patients, and family members. There was always something new and exciting happening on our unit and so many new skills and techniques to learn. If you showed interest in a technique or wondered why a patient had to have things in a specific manner, the gold team, heart physicians, would explain and some would even give to you their pager number to call them if there were any changes in their patient's condition during your shift. My favorite part about being an employee was the family atmosphere amongst those of us who had been working on our unit for years together. We had an opportunity to learn and grow, so we knew about each others' families and personal goals.

It has a good work environment in terms of interaction with co-workers and multidisciplinary team to care for the patients. However, the patient and nursing ration is high regardless of the acuity of the patients. Some patients are very sick and need more attention and care, but the nurse-patient ratio are not supportive for RNs to use critical thinking skills and provide holistic care for the patient's wellbeing. It appears many nurses are forced to work task-based nursing care. I come home from work and sometimes I worry about my patients and it stresses me out. The management keep adding nursing duties and responsibilities without upgrading their equipment. What this place keeps going, I think, is that your coworkers and their support keep you standing and doing your job. It's teaching hospital, so there is always an opportunity to learn, but often you simply dont have time to follow up with it for your own learning process at the same time.

They do not care about their employees. During inclement weather they always send the most ignorant hospital wide notification “we are expecting 30in of snow in the area be sure to make arrangements to arrive on time and cover your shift until proper relief has arrived”. Leaders most times have no clue what the policies are. Administration only follows rules when they are convenient for them. They drag their feet with anything that serves as a benefit to their employees. They don’t really want you taking the allotted two 15 minute breaks so don’t think you’re going to combine it with the other 30 and get an hour. They are way too comfortable with fooling around with employees pay and calling it a mistake. They expect employees to be robots. The pay is good but the turnover rate is extremely high. So high they had to start offering bonus incentives to get it down and it still doesn’t work. I could go on but I’ll stop. 

A typical day at work is getting all the vital imformation i need to assist my patients at the beginning of the day from staff in charge. learning new ways to help my patient and to be apart of a team player. without management assistance doing thing in an orderly fashion to assure the safety of my patience when making quick decisions. Being surrounded by a very cultural enviroment which allows me to learn about different people and their background. hardest part of my work is finding dedicated people who's trust worthy and do things according to the company standards and not get into their feeling but be fare to patience and employees. Feeling like family to employees and patience. celebrating b,days holidays, and accomplishments and achievements laughing when feeling like crying, and support from staff. coming together at the end of the day for a common cause. to help people.

Very dangerous place to work as an RN. Terribly understaffed throughout the hospital on a daily basis. I would never go here myself or allow my loved ones to get treated here. Experienced nurses would never stay long as they know their licenses could be in danger. I am very nervous everyday I go to work as I already know it will be understaffed and dangerous assignments will be given. I am currently looking for a new position elsewhere away from the bedside after my experience here. I pray every day before coming into work because I am very scared. 

The turnover rate is outrageous. Nurses are leaving within a year of being there. Any day of the week your nurse may have 3 months to two years experience only as any nurse with real experience would know not to stay as it’s dangerous trap. Do not work here

The head persons that work to create a good relationship with employees, I FOUND ZERO PROBLEM. 

The internal department in Radiology was the problems. And the day   to day department functionary work tolerable and expected. 

Where the problem truly existed, for me formed a culture  that made daily routine from scheduling of outpatient, a major problem area. And the supported areas from the ancillary division for Radiology. Non existing, This includes scheduling for outpatient and transportation of in-patients. George Washington Hospital has good people that work there and those that try their best to keep a strong force together, are working within guide lines that aren't always reachable. So all together, they do their best under the circumstances.
