Pros: 
Very good benefits. Colleagues are very kind and welcoming, and there is a lot to learn on the job. If you are there long enough you can really gain a strong understanding of what works and does not work in a health care system in regards to quality.

Cons: 

This is long, but let me try to help you understand what you are in for if you are strongly considering this job.

First off, I invested A LOT in this job. Including moving to a completely different location, buying a car, paying travel expenses, among other things. It was a career-changing position I accepted, I assumed it would be treated as such while I worked there. 

Anyway, going into the role itself:

There is NO work-to-life balance. As my boss put it, you have to kick off the ground running. Pretty much since the first day I started working I could tell that this job was more than I was expecting. 

When I first applied to this role, I assumed (based on the job description) that they just wanted someone who has had experience working on projects, and can communicate with other departments, and basically work together as a team to solve company issues, and present the findings to the higher-ups. That was just the surface, there is a lot more in the job description than they tell you, ask for full details on what you will be doing (it is about a page or 2).

Here is a list of a few things I was not aware of but did what I could to make work: There is a lot of secretarial work that is involved with the job, such as being a fast typer in meetings and marking down all the data in a very short amount of time; filling out patient safety injuries (such as falls) prior to the start of the workday, an hour to 2 hours prior (8 AM-5 PM is the workday, the actual time is 6:30 AM-6:30 PM, on a good day, or 5 AM - 10 PM on a bad day, all exempt). Developing hospital quality committees, which I think was a great way to learn a lot about how hospitals function, but something you should develop an understanding of after solid exposure to how a new entity works, something you do a few months into a new job, not a few weeks in. There were other responsibilities I was not aware of, but was, of course, willing to learn how to do, but was never given a real chance or any guidance on how to go about them, just thrown into with the hopes of making a basket. 

I also, unfortunately, started in the busiest month of the year (because it was the start of the new fiscal year). So it was incredibly difficult to reach out to my supervisor, or other colleagues for help on how to do assignments because they were so frantic and busy. This caused delays in my work, uncertainty as to whether or not I was getting things done the right way, miscommunication with my supervisor (who was incredibly overwhelmed and overworked), which lead to hesitancy on whether to ask any questions at all for clarity because I did not want to frustrate her any further. This, among other things, made it a very tough environment to work in. 

This eventually led to my termination shortly after starting (about a month), which was stunning, especially after the amount I invested in to move there. This was a termination I think could have been avoided entirely if there was structured guidance by my superior, proper shadowing on how to do my job (which I was told I would get but never received when I started working there). Starting in a time that was less busy and frantic (which was not my fault), and an understanding that it takes time to fully understand how an entire hospital entity operates when you are new somewhere. Which includes knowing the number of quality committees there are, and thoroughly understanding what they all do; the QAPI policy (which is needed in QI of course, but something that takes time to fully understand, and I never really got), leapfrog (again common, but something that takes time to know.), and finally PI projects (which I was never given a chance to work on, on account of all the other stuff, which is very disappointing).



Guthrie is horrible. Robert Packer Hospital anyway, I have been in healthcare for literally 8 years and worked different kinds of healthcare and you’d think working at a hospital would be amazing and professional but it is not. It is not at all. It was horrible. I was bullied by co-workers and they allowed it because she’s worked for them for 28 years. That doesn’t allow you to bully someone for their sexual orientation and being a guy period. If you’re not a woman you’re nobody. Nonetheless bully someone at all. Everyone was nasty and rude to me. They were just mean. The managers even held a meeting with us new care partners and told us “ with what you guys have dealt with since you started I would have ran off” basically admitted we started into some chaos, and we did. Anytime I went to them to report the things I wanted to stop they would act like I was inconveniencing them. Like I was the one in the wrong. Literally I have worked for smaller companies with less drama this is supposed to be a top 100 hospital in the nation? Yeah right. They allow bullying. They treat you like trash  and it’s insane. Then I got let go by my manager and her only words were “you don’t seem to be fitting in” you’re right I’m being bullied and dealing with it everyday. All the nurses loved me they said I was amazing at what I did. And the patients loved me. The management are bullies and they conspire with the employees and are all bullies. I was a victim but it’s okay I am glad I am out of there. Robert Packer Hospital is HORRIBLE. It’s all about drama and cliques and if you don’t kiss their butts and join their cliques they will find a way to get rid of you or fire you. If you’re considering leaving your job because you think Robert packer is going to be better turn away now 3 of us left jobs to go there thinking it was a great thing when in reality they screwed us over. Now we have to find new jobs. And none of us even knew each other. They will do this for NO REASON. horrible horrible place.

No individual task is particularly difficult. 
The sheer volume of these tasks is untenable. 

Guthrie can not afford it, but there needs to be more people and each one needs to be paid more. This is at the lowest level. If anything we could trim the fat at the C-level downward. The increased pay is not just for the fact that the world is evermore expensive, but there is a real brain drain at Guthrie. I spent a couple years applying to get a Guthrie job, and finally got in mostly because I knew someone and because Guthrie was really desperate at the time. I get here and there are co-workers who say "I seen," and lack any vocabulary, spelling, grammar, and have a difficult time with basic arrhythmic. One can only blame the region for so long. There are plenty of applicants with higher education and experience that are passed over for those who will stay in that position longer. Turnover for patient service specialists or other roles would not be so high if that position were held to a more venerable standard, and then paid accordingly. There needs to be something to keep employees at Guthrie other than "it's better than a factory job." That factory job is not looking so bad in fact....

(I did apply for factory work for a while, but was able to chose time with my kids over the wacky shifts at said factory.)

A typical day included: interviewing patients, reviewing physician orders and verifying health insurance coverage to properly register patients for outpatient services or admission to the facility. Obtaining and coding diagnoses on physician orders and properly entering information into the database. Research CPT codes and charges and prepare bills and provide same to self-pay patients. Accepting payments on patient bills and issuing proper receipts.

A typical night shift was being a one-person department for a 12 hour shift (7 PM - 7 AM). In addition to registering patients, insurance paperwork from the previous day was reviewed and sorted for the billing department; the daily census for the facility and the attached skilled nursing unit was prepared; the cash drawer was reconciled, and the switchboard was operated in compliance with established communication codes.

The most difficult part of this job was working multiple shifts in the same week, (example: 7 AM - 7 PM one day, 7 PM - 7 AM the next day followed by a 3 PM - 7 PM shift)

I learned how to code diagnoses and apply correct charges and this is what spurred my interest in medical billing.

The most enjoyable part of the position was interaction with the patients.

Guthrie was my first ever nursing Job. I left nursing because of it . To start with the Nurse residency program is a joke. It has little to do with where you want to go and more to do with where they are really short  and need staff. I was fortunate / unfortunate  enough to get my offer for the  ICU. I regret ever accepting it. Lots of Local staff bullying people. If you're not one of the click you can forget getting any real support. Where on one hand it is well funded and staffed decently, the lack of nursing support is troublesome. Dr.'s and residents always helpful. if you ever report problems with staff to management or HR they are not  helpful and wont follow throw. When you start as a new Nurse forced to sign a 2 year commitment with no sign on bonus or reimbursement with a $5,000.00 dollar penalty if you leave early.(They will keep last check if you don't intend to pay.)  The parking is a nightmare . Out in a lot that you have to shuttle in from. Car was dinged pretty bad there while I was working. Security explained not there problem and none of the cameras worked. Had to use my insurance to get car fixed.Changed to uniforms back in Aprilish and expected to pay top dollar for cheap scrubs that cost 60 just for tops and get next to nothing in reimbursement. Finally gave notice and left . Overall experience made it so I  didn't want to continue on in the field.

Working as a physician at a rural Level 1 trauma center has been an immensely rewarding experience. The fast-paced environment, combined with the diverse range of cases, has allowed me to hone my skills and grow both professionally and personally. The close-knit team of dedicated professionals fosters a collaborative atmosphere, ensuring the highest standard of patient care.

One of the key advantages of this setting is the opportunity to handle a wide variety of medical emergencies and complex cases. This has significantly enhanced my clinical acumen and decision-making abilities. The hospital is well-equipped with advanced technology and resources, which supports efficient and effective patient management.

Additionally, the rural setting offers a unique blend of professional challenge and community connection. The sense of camaraderie among colleagues and the strong bond with the local community create a supportive and fulfilling work environment. The leadership is approachable and genuinely invested in staff development and well-being.

While the workload can be demanding, the experience and satisfaction gained from making a tangible difference in patients’ lives are unparalleled. Overall, working at this rural Level 1 trauma center has been a profoundly enriching experience that I highly recommend to any dedicated healthcare professional.

Great clinical experiences within a resource rich multi specialty clinic. Close and loving family-like relationships amongst work teams. Sweet rural community near Fingerlakes cultural offerings. 

No limit on max work hours for clinicians. No leadership opportunities for non-physician clinicians.  Leadership is 98% white male physicians, while half of providers are women, not white, and/or not physicians. Good salary, but offers half as much CME funding to mid-levels as physicians. Insensitive to the needs of working parents.

Espouses patient centered care but conducts no community outreach to ascertain patient preference or needs and takes no visible action on community feedback when received.  Offers no outpatient mental health services in a grossly underserved community and very limited inpatient psychiatric care, so primary care clinicians carry the extra burden of caring for these needs.

Leadership priorities and plans are not transparent. Talks "team" but practices an authoritarian power structure. High turnover in middle management. High proportion of travel staff in the hospital. Very solid and dedicated local nursing staff.

Guthrie is becoming more about the money and  less about every patient every time.  More like patient is just a number not a human. We  go with out needed supplies to cut the budget. This includes paper, gowns,vaccines, working equipment,  lab needles,tissues,hand soap and hand sanitizer.

Due to poor management training is poor,  rules do not get inforced, all are not treated equal, and Some never get updates on policy or work  flow changes due to lack of communication. 

Very unorganized, never prepared, always short handed, high turm over, lack of knowledge, pay rate is poor, hectic on some days and always very stressful. 
If you show you are competent or go above and beyond; the only thing you get is increased work load.

Guthrie has many great providers and services.
But unfortunately Sayre makes all the rules for doctors to follow and over all policies.

Ithaca clinic is not a hospital and has a very different culture than Sayre Pennsylvania.

Although, I did enjoy the job and the majority of the staff were friendly, those few who were difficult to work with made the days long, I would have loved to have stayed in that position had it not been for personal reasons and difficult staff.  Management was clearly aware of the issues.  We did have meetings about the behavior, unfortunately not much changed.  This unfortunately happens in work environments. 

One thing that made the job difficult was that once trained and started to feel like I was getting the hang of which patients were to be seen by which doctor, the doctors would change the rules without discussing with management.  It made it difficult to know the correct way to do things and make all of the doctors happy.

Otherwise, it was a nice place to work.  Most of the providers were very friendly and welcoming. 

I was not aware of the staff parking shuttle.  Had I been aware of this at the interview, not after I accepted the position, I may have accepted a different position at a closer location to my residence.  This position was a commute for me and then adding extra time onto it for parking makes a difference.  I feel this information should be disclosed during the interviewing process.

What is the best part of working at the company?
It was great at first but then they over work you by making you do your job plus the job of the managers buddy. So she doesn't have to management is horrible 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The fact that employees are allowed to treat other employees like garbage and management does nothing about it. The fact that some people are required to work and others are allowed to play on their phones and do nothing all day

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Absolutely horrible I've never worked for a company that allowed people to make you feel so small and worthless and management just sits back and watches extremely stressful and miserable

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
When I first started I loved the job. It was great until they hired new management. Now it is absolutely horrible. It makes you physically ill just walking through the door when you know that you were going to have to do your job plus somebody else's and get treated like a doormat
