The Health Trust

I enjoyed working at the Health Trust. It was a very difficult decision to leave the agency. I made some great friendships while working there. The agency as  a whole are very nice and care about the staff and the work they do in the community. The pay is above average for intensive case managers. The Intensive Case Manager position can be stressful at times, because you are managing a caseload of 20 clients who are chronically homeless with a mental health diagnosis Some clients are currently housed, and some are currently homeless.   Once you get to know the clients, you will love helping them and some of the clients will really appreciate you, which is the most gratifying part of the job. You will get a chance to understand the homeless population first hand, and you will make a real difference in the lives of people who need it the most. 

As a case manager, your job is to help them remain stably housed, once you find them housing. Hopefully, most of your caseload is currently housed, and you only have a few who are unhoused/homeless. Your job will include: finding landlords who will rent to our clients and accept housing subsidies from Housing Authority or Abode, which is a real challenge because some landlords had a bad experience with a homeless client, and will never rent again to homeless people again. Intensive case management is just that, very intense at times depending on the clients and their level of self-suffciency. Some clients need a lot of hand holding and others are pretty self-sufficient.  It's alot of work, but you get to manage your own schedule, which is one of the perks of the job. You are in and out of the office all day.

Many of the case managers left the Health Trust because of the stress of completing Medi-Cal documentation which required you to be in the office to complete the documentation.  It's not that the Medi-Cal is difficult to complete or understand, its just that it is very time consuming and deadline driven. It helps if you are licensed or  a ASW or AMFT. Working with clients all day leaves little time to complete Medi-Cal documentation with specific guidelines and criteria. I had to complete my  Medi-Cal documentation at home in order to meet deadlines. The Medi-Cal deadlines will drive you crazy, but The Health Trust is not a bad place to work at if you need a job, love helping people and you have previous experience with case management or working with clients with a mental health diagnosis.

I started as a part-time paid driver in 2007 with the Meals on Wheels Team, picking up meals for an assigned routes and delivered within a 3 hour time period each day I worked.  I learned the packing duties and was called upon to pack meals daily, especially after we moved to a different location, The Food Basket.  I had a delightful supervisor and enjoyed the monthly staff meetings where I received helpful information about safety and wellness. I also met some wonderful volunteers who also joined the paid drivers everyday.  

A new 32 hr. position opened up in February 2011 and I was able to split my day with mornings spent at the Food Basket and afternoons spent at our office in a different location.  I was given various tasks, doing client intakes over the phone, providing customer service, answering phone calls, ordering office supplies, and running the pet food assistance program.  I would occasionally deliver meals if a driver was not available.  During the holiday times I assisted with the gift drive and kept track of the gifts being sent out to clients by paid and volunteer drivers. I worked directly under our department manager at this point and she turned out to be quite different than my previous encounters with her.  She made the afternoons quite difficult for everyone working under her with her mood swings, unclear directives and unreasonable expectations.  Budget cuts from the state and county resulted in lay-offs in July 2011 and almost all of the paid driving staff was replaced with volunteers and my newly created position was ended.  The manager was let go about five months following the lay-offs.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The Health Trust has a poor leadership structure, often missing the chance to support/encourage/empower it's team.  A variety of unnecessary rules/standards prevented growth and interest in building the organization. Some of the programs operate so poorly, they were often the brunt of the jokes at county-affiliated meetings.  The organization uses a "business-based" program to document health-care related client care. It always felt like I was bringing a knife to a gunfight. Benefits package is mediocre.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Overall, staff are left feeling unsupported, in a hostile environment, and/or left unchecked.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I worked in the field, serving clients. My roll was fairly independent (a perk if you prefer to work alone), so long as my client's needs were being met.
You will often have to lean on other organizations within the county to educate you on best practices.

The department I was a part of clearly prioritized work-life balance, inclusiveness, and employee health. Management is very supportive of your goals and wants you to succeed. 

The work is purposeful and has a clear impact on clients. The only downside is that clients can cause some stress, but that is expected to a degree when working a public facing job and you get a true sense that management has your back.

Work closely with an accounting staff.  Handled multiple clients simultaneously with full accounting cycle, report preparation, helping clients develop and maintain accounting procedures and policies, budget preparation, grant review and audit support.
The biggest challenge was change management in the clients organizations. 
The greatest satisfaction I got was when clients appreciated the accounting, reporting and analytical help I provided them so that they could easily understand their operations and make decisions accordingly.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Poor management, being over worked, having to reach your units daily and tracking, manager hardly available when needed but always down your neck on your telecommute day.

Everyone is quiet and to themselves due to the massive work load.

Begin the day reviewing and returning emails and phone calls. Meet with clients and file paper work.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The culture and the work schedule flexibility. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The transition, they are closing all of their program services even after recently hiring new people.

This is the best part of the agency. They care about and trust their staff. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A typical day is busy but manageable.

It's a great company to work for. The pay is the best that I have found in the area for comparable jobs. 
My job consists of receiving referrals of chronically homeless individuals from the County, finding them, housing them, linking them with services and then working with them to keep them housed.
I find the management here very knowledgeable, kind and supportive. 
The hardest part of the job is keeping up with the documentation and the best part of the job is working with the clients.

The morale here has really deteriorated over the last few years. Mgmt doesn’t care about the staff or the clients anymore; they’re just driven by numbers and squeezing as much productivity out of their workers as possible. Most staff are new grads or have very little CM experience. The good ones leave for better jobs as soon as they finish their first year (if they don’t get fired first). And the workers who’ve actually been here for awhile are jaded, lazy, and/or just too incompetent to find a job somewhere else. Overall— hard pass, would not recommend. 

My days begins early.  The flexibility to come in early is great.  I learn about housing and needed services for the Homeless population.  The management works hard for staff and the community.  My work culture is supportive.  The hardest part of the job is the fear of the Homeless population to make change to be self sufficient.  The most enjoyable part of the job is a Client becoming housed.
