The Iowa Clinic

They claim to be physician owned but the doctors aren't involved in the process of the clinic. They stay in their office and only come out to complain. They expect the directors and managers to handle everything even though they have no clue. Job duties are not fairly distributed. Little training, many changes with the same quality expectations. Upper management doesn't care about you, they only care about the money the providers are bringing in. No employee value creating a high turnover. Horrible, negative culture that is emotionally, physically and mentally exhausting. They have cameras they claim are for security reasons but have reported they watch for cell phone usage and employees not being productive. The hourly staff barely get a lunch, constantly working through to catch up while salary paid employees enjoy an hr lunch every day. Constant changes with extreme lack of communication. Very little flexibility with schedules and employees were not encouraged to use pto. No recognition for hard work but constant attention to mistakes. Try to suggest improving the process and they'll be quick to tell you it's not necessary. They fire without allowing for improvement, you are replaceable. The truth behind the mask. 

The clinic its self is great, it’s just the pulmonary department specifically. That department drained my passion for TIC completely. Management there openly pick and choose favorites and if you are not one of the favorites, they will go out of their way to make sure your experience there is horrible. ( The turnover rate for front desk AND clinical staff is pretty alarming to say the least). Be prepared to be expected to do the job of three people while both managers are breathing down your neck reminding you that you are disposable to them. This includes but not limited to: helping patients in realtime while NEVER missing a phone call, also those task lists better be down to 0 otherwise you’ll never hear the end of it, and don’t forget the large amount of Prior Authorizations you will do and work for the outreach clinics that the providers travel to. That is a typical day. All of that at one time others the managers will complain about the one thing you forgot to do or didn’t have time for. The only positive thing I got from that job were friends and a Segway to a better organization. 

At least 5 levels of management watch the daily billing numbers. Employees are informed that they should take lunches and breaks, but if you do and your numbers drop, then you get interrogated about what you have been doing.  So, many employees don't take breaks or lunches or time off.  What good is PTO if you can't use it. No one to back you up if you do take time off. When you come back again management wants to know where you are with your numbers and how you are going to get caught up.  Much of the work is still on paper and if it has been computerized then it is clunky and ill designed because management never asked those using the systems for their input first. The number of patients, doctors, directors and managers have increased the support staff keeping the revenue flow have not.  We have consistently lost good employees because of these reasons. The doctors are good, but even they are pressured to see more patients, do more in the same amount of time and charge, charge, charge.

Was a great experience at the CBO when I started and was eventually permitted to work from home, however it's a very unstable workplace. New leadership at the beginning of the year resulted in a loss of 20% of the office: half fired, half quit. I quit after being given customer service responsibilities on top of my already full workload. Extremely unappreciative management, who was fired 2 weeks after I left. They fired a person who had worked for the company 30 years. How they can keep a straight face when they say "we care, it shows" is beyond me. They roll out software changes with no training and IT does not care one bit if the programs don't work. They don't want you talking to your coworkers. They want smiley robots. Supervisors tattle to management and stab you in the back when it comes to annual review. Very disappointing and discouraging place to work.

Hardest part of the job is the lack of respect from leaders. The most enjoyable part of the job is when I was out supporting end users. Culture is small bonuses instead of respect, communication, collaboration, active listening and least of all leadership accountability.  Deskside with users and remote access, to set up desktops, laptops, peripherals, install      software, and troubleshoot problems. 
Using communication skills to coordinate with vendors and end users to resolve technical issues with equipment, software, and remote access. 
Providing regular maintenance for front-end users including replacing computer equipment,  and components, remote troubleshooting, and updates. 
Documentation of procedures, inventory, and trouble-call resolutions. 
Troubleshoot issues via help desk communications, phone, email, or text.

As a former provider, I was initially drawn to The Iowa Clinic’s promise of patient-centered care and strong clinical collaboration. Unfortunately, my experience revealed a disconnect between those ideals and the reality of leadership priorities. Patient needs often took a back seat to administrative goals, and concerns raised by clinicians were frequently disregarded. It was disheartening to see dedicated staff struggle without adequate support or acknowledgment. Leadership lacked transparency, and meaningful change felt out of reach. While I worked with many compassionate and capable colleagues, the organizational culture did not foster the quality care or teamwork that initially attracted me. I hope The Iowa Clinic takes a closer look at internal feedback to better align its values with daily operations.

Huge patient volume sacrifices quality appointments.  The average established patient waited months for their appointments, only to arrive and have extremely long waits in the lobby, and exam room. Once the doctor actually came in, many appointments lasted only 5 minutes, People would exit the apponintment upset or confused as to what just took place. This was in a complicated  specialty office. In my opinion, patients deserve better.  If management wants higher patient satisfaction ratings, they need to take this seriously and address it. 

Intense work environment, they need to hire more help. Co-workers were great. The heardest part of the job was the difficulty of being able to follow through with patient needs/concerns in a timey manner due to huge patient volume.

Spends alot on advertisement to pursue new patients while unable to maintain current patient volume at a poor level of customer service. Five Star experience may be for their patients but not for their staff.  The payscales are lower than other local companies providing the same service.  Coworkers were wonderful but many had left or were leaving due to level of frustrations.  Management was unprepared. Lack of communication,. Instead of being proactive, always reactive to continuing issues that were arising. Worked there close to 18 years. When company was smaller patient care was the priority,  as it has grown, that has been replaced with the amount of money coming in being the bottom line.

The Iowa Clinic as a whole is a great employer.  The pay was fair, retirement amount is great-but takes up to two years to get a penny contributed, medical and dental insurance for a family was on the expensive side, PTO was average.  Each clinic within The Iowa Clinic has its own set of rules and policies.  It sounds like a good idea but then there is no support if a situation arises and your manager has the final say.  Communication and transparency within the department I worked at was terrible.  Seemed almost secretive and an unnecessary need to know basis.  There is a reason there have been consistently 25+ clinical openings for the past 1-2 years.  I had some great coworkers and learned a lot but I don’t think I would ever go back.

At the end of the day staff are just people that are expected to perform extra duties without extra compensation. If you try to vocalize frustration you are reminded how lucky you are to have a job. If you are not a Dr, your opinion and experience means nothing. There are many promises about career growth that upper management will never follow through with. Both a positive and a neg-active your manager is typically not there- they spend a tremendous amount of time in leadership meetings.
As anywhere you will work side by side with great co-workers that truly  care about patients but will ultimately get drained by a company that only sees staff as replaceable
