A typical day at work is answering calls and transferring them to different departments. What I learned is there are circumstances when things do not go according to plan and you have to adapt. For example the elevator was broken and there was no manager available to inform the employees what needed to be done. I decided to take the key from the other department and opened the emergency exit stair case. I was given a lot of complement for making this quick decision. Management is inconsistent with their decision because they will make a policy and then switch from the new policy back to their old policy. 
  Workplace culture is friendly however, people need to communicate more regarding company policy. For example there was a meeting held to inform employees regarding minors under the age of eighteen need to be accompanied by an adult upstairs. The employees who attended the meeting did not inform their coworkers and management never sent an email to inform everyone regarding their new company policy.The hardest part of the job is getting administrators and management to follow through in informing people updated policy. Also what gets to be difficult is the changing of policies from old to new then back again. The most enjoyable part of the job is people get along and enjoy each others company.

I found this company to be completely driven by controlling, fear-based management from the supervisors, clinical directors all the way to the head of the company.  Therapists are required to maintain ridiculous high caseload numbers, coerce patients to return weekly whether or not it is necessary for their mental health. They are concerned with keeping high retention rates, you are overloaded with documentation requirements and their greatest concern is the financial aspect employees and patients bring in for them.  There is absolutely no regard to therapist burn out rate and constant threats that no one is irreplaceable is always looming should a therapist seek guidance from a superior  Patients as well as therapists lives are literally at risk all day everyday as they have no security system in place when working with seriously and persistently mentally ill patients and firing the is what happens to the therapist that dares to mention this ginormous problem.  If you care, at all, about yourself and your clients and have integrity and a sense of ethics regarding clear right and wrongdoing this is not the place for you.

Jewish Board was an ultimately unfriendly experience to anyone below mid-management, even within the HR Department. Promotions were not as frequent in comparison to outsourcing vacated jobs to new staff/employees. As more senior/experienced managers left Jewish Board, their successors were brought in with little to no training and/or experience for the particular demands of their new role. Over the last three years before my departure Jewish Board has restructured/RIF'd 3 major programs and is looking to shutter one of their biggest social outreach sources in Westchester by Summer 2018.

Ultimately it is better off for new workers in the following fields (Direct Care/Residential Care, Social Work, Care Coordination, Case Management, Nursing) to avoid going to Jewish Board unless they have a master's at minimum. That alone will ensure an Employee receives a disproportionately high salary regardless of their role.

This job and position is just unrealistic. Your daily responsibilities include home visits to clients home /phone contact , documentation. Weekly staff meetings, fire alarm checks, group and individual staff meetings. Several  Monthly, quarterly and yearly  deadlines ,  Quarterly deadlines such as service plans. Management is the least bit of understanding. Every day we put out our life on the line to provide services for the client in addition to staying on top of the millions of deadlines and making meetings. We provided services and care for our clients more than an a police officer care for the citizens, more than some doctors care for their patients.

When COVID hit staff was allowed to work from home for a short period of time. The work from home opportunity was taken away when management felt that staff was not doing work at home. Despite the pandemic and workers testing positive for covid in the office, staff was demanded to report back to the office. 

And the pay? Forget about that too. (Thumbs down). 

Although I don’t like to bearer of bad news. The cons outweigh the pro. 

You would need to have excellent self care skills in order to survive this position.


I was assigned eight to ten adolescents who were seen twice a week in individual therapy. They were seen once a week with their family. I worked closely with their psychiatrist as most of the children were on medication for Schizophrenia or BiPolar Disorder. I had the responsibility of taking the adolescent to a New York City hospital if they were having a psychotic episode. We had weekly meetings with the entire staff working with the adolescents to discuss concerns and their progress.

I had the luxury of having supervision by experts in the filed of Family therapy and group therapy. In addition, there was weekly supervision with the psychiatrist on psychiatric disorders and the Head on Social work to discuss the individual sessions. There was four hours of supervision per week with each expert in their field. We also went to the main office where we took two courses in the mental health field a semester. It was four courses a year for three years.

A typical day at the Jewish Board Mental Health Clinic was fast-paced, managing schedules, resolving issues, and supporting dedicated therapists and clients. I learned to prioritize tasks, adapt quickly, and foster communication among staff. Management provided clear expectations, and the workplace culture was collaborative, with a shared commitment to client care. The hardest part was balancing the demands of a busy clinic, but the most rewarding was working alongside compassionate therapists who truly cared for their clients and seeing the positive impact on the community.



During my employment at Neptune Family Services (NFS), I have learned that strong leadership and a supportive team of co-workers is critical not only to an agency's success, but it contributed immensely to my own growth as a social worker.  It is because of my team that I have been able to properly serve my clients and achieve an optimal outcome for them.  The hardest part of this job is dealing with intense situations that can sometimes arise in child welfare cases, however I have been able to overcome these hurdles through guidance and assistance by my director and fellow staff members who are always approachable and willing to offer their advice. Management at this facility, serves not only to keep the supply of copying paper in abundance, it also keeps us organized at the same time helping to create a positive work environment.    
The most enjoyable part of my job is working with the children.  I completed my concentration in children and families and feel that working at NFS provided me with invaluable experience in this field.

The agency allows for continued education (CEU's), many training's and includes Jewish holidays. 
However the agency is so large that depending on the site/population you work in there seems to be a difference in access to resources.

Depending on the location/site there is great workplace culture but at some locations there is a lot of micromanagement, lack of appreciation for staff who are on the front-lines with clients and  disgusting office culture where those in certain administrative positions do not listen to workers about client's needs, make impulsive decisions, and do not allow room for career advancement/growth if you do not serve their interests. The pay is a little below average, the more longevity you have with agency then the better salary. 

Overall this agency is great to start out with, especially if you are new to social services. There is a lot to learn and working within the community is extremely rewarding. Beware of bad managers and know your rights as an employee at the start.

Jewish Board of Family and Childrens services is a very good company in helping people with mental illness and homeless. JBFCS we also have social workers and DSP as well. They offer outside therapy to adults and children of all ages. They have a Family youth intervention that services the community in all 5boroughs in New York. In the residential sites we help clients of all disabilities and serve those with daily living skills and how to get back into the community. JBFCS also helps clients with mental problems whether they are from birth or from problems that they have come across in life. Our job is to help clients regain their confidence and the trust and ability to cope with every day issue that they may encounter. JBFCS is an agency which offers many many services to people of all ages. 

The management style/technics on the campus changes from time to time based on who is the program director is. Consequently, continuity is not maintained.
My typical day at work consist of receiving briefing from the AOD, Administrator On Duty on the previous shift. This enables me address to staffing issues and residents issues before I start my shift.  If the ratio of residents and staff is alright, then I have to focus on structure that also consist of activity on my shift. Recreational activities is very vital to the program to keep the residents busy and engaged. The challenging part of my job consist of documentation on AWOL and hospitalization issues. 
The most enjoyable part of the job is when I receive calls from residence parents commending me for making sure that their kids arrived home safely for their day pass or home visit.
