The People Concern

This is a great place to work. Doing the job isn't the problem. The clients are not a problem. Most of the employees are on top of their work as well.  The issue with this job is mostly the incompetent NP and MD.  They create unneccessary problems for everyone when it could be avoided if they themselves do their job correctly and CONSISTENTLY.  Because of the nature of the work and their titles, I feel that instead of being accountable for their mistakes, they deny ever making it and have staff doing the most ridiculous things to try and resolve it for them while they stand there, watch, and continue to delegate tasks that don't make any sense. This ruins the workflow for all staff and creates a very toxic and stressful environment where it is difficult to complete your work on time.  Then, they start pointing fingers toward staff because the problem was not resolved when it could have been avoided altogether had they not made the mistake to begin with or took matters into their own hands to resolve a problem that they created.  This is a CONSISTENT and DAILY problem and that is why there is a high turnover here.  An example: The NP will tell a client one thing and then when the client brings it up, the NP will deny ever saying it.  Then the NP will have staff running around trying to resolve it all day while the NP continues to delegate tasks she does not want to do.  The NP will do something wrong several times after being told, continue to do it wrong, and then act like this was the first time she heard it.  She will also continue to give the wrong information 98% of the time to everyone.  She contradicts herself all the time.  I've heard complaints about the director being micromanaging but she is reasonable to a degree.  This place would be so much better to work in if the NP was more accountable for the things she says and does.  There are no consequences for her actions and I believe that is what drives employees away.

If you’re planning on becoming a licensed clinician and ultimately looking for a leadership position you can start at the entry level (clinical case manager or intern) to work your way up. There is a lot of support for those that do the work and have a good attitude. Not much different than any other non-profit.

If your goal is to be a private practice therapist  avoid this place. Go find a private practice to learn how that all works. There are very few supervisors there capable of supervising therapists for private practice even though you will be able to get your hours signed off easily. There are many licensed supervisors that can help you develop sharp clinical skills as well as become a strong social worker however. 

If you don’t have a Master’s degree you might be able to put some time in and, with a little luck with the program, you might land a leadership role. Don’t expect to be making the same as the Master’s level people. They really try to be culturally diverse/inclusive in their language yet it is difficult to ignore the irony of the gender/ethnicity/economic status/education level for those in leadership. Life experience can easily be assessed to count for more but that is not the way it is there yet. 

There is opportunity there. They are trying to solidify their culture and it’s a work in progress. The client contact can be hard and depending on the program you might not have the support you need to thrive. Given the randomness of the program you’re applying for a three star rating is justified. Hey you could luck out and be applying for a four or five star program. However it is more probable that you’re applying for a one or two star program due to the high turnover. Good luck.

It may sound strange, but working for LAMP (which later became The People Concern) was once a personal goal of mine. I love this city and the community it serves, which is why I have always dedicated so much of my time to both work and volunteer service. When I first arrived, everything appeared connected, supportive, and mission driven. However, over time, the reality behind the curtain became difficult to ignore. I witnessed new employees being assigned some of the high acuity clients with limited support, only to be blamed when challenges inevitably arose. Rather than addressing systemic issues, responsibility often seemed to fall solely on the case manager. On my first day, the CEO spoke about starting his career as a case manager. It was an inspiring story. Unfortunately, from my experience, it sometimes feels as though leadership has forgotten many of the realities frontline staff face. Favoritism, inconsistent accountability, and unequal support can undermine the very mission the organization claims to uphold. I still believe deeply in serving this community. My disappointment does not come from the work itself or from the clients we serve; it comes from seeing how easily the people doing that work can be overlooked, burned out, or blamed for problems beyond their control.

I joined this organization inspired by its mission and community focus. Unfortunately, my experience did not align with those values.

The workload expectations often extended well beyond the standard workday, with a high volume of responsibilities that sometimes felt like the work of multiple roles combined. There was a strong emphasis on availability outside of regular hours, including early mornings and weekends. Work-life balance was very difficult to maintain, and expressing concerns about that wasn’t always met with understanding.

In my time there, communication felt inconsistent, and internal processes—especially around staffing changes—were not always transparent. Several team members experienced sudden changes in role or status, often without clear explanations. This led to a culture of uncertainty and, in some cases, diminished morale.

While there are staff who care deeply about the work being done, I found the overall environment to be more focused on optics than genuine team support. Constructive feedback was difficult to offer without fear of being seen as negative or uncooperative.

This may be the right environment for some, but in my personal experience, I found it challenging to thrive professionally or maintain peace of mind.

There’s a reason this is viewed as one of the top homes in the country. It has such a large number of staff and such incredible funding, making your job a lot easier. That being said, during COVID they became very understaffed, and that’s caused them to hang on to some people who would have been fired in an instant 3-4 years ago. Pay is definitely better than other homes, but any job in this field is underpaid, considering the work we do. For a Catholic company, they are very accepting of different types of people. As a transgender person they have been very accepting of me, however their Catholic insurance has been horrible to me. Administration depends on which area you’re working in, overall are generally flexible and understanding, but some definitely have issues, mainly with communication. Residents are generally treated well but no place is perfect. Raises are given annually and a few cents here and there when funding is increased. However I didn’t receive a full raise when I was promoted. If you want to change jobs there’s lots of different opportunities to switch to. 

Love this agency for the most part, they do great work. However, the leadership doesn’t get held accountable and can be very shady and strange. As someone who worked side by side as a leader in a middle management role, I saw first hand how unstable some of the leadership is. It’s daunting when you’re trying to do the work, support clients and the frontline staff, but then have to juggle a ton of made up drama that leadership decides is pertinent. Then if you try to report a leader for their behavior to HR it seems to get swept under the rug, whereas frontline staff are easily held accountable for much less. Middle management is probably one of the toughest roles at this agency. Frontline staff don’t get paid enough and without a clinical (mental health) master’s degree there’s no room for advancement. The clients are amazing, and this agency attracts really cool humans to work with, I made some great friends here, but ultimately the stress of working under an insane director who couldn’t be held accountable for her actions was driving me to burn out so I left. But the benefits were decent, and it’s very easy to get your clinical license if you can stand it long enough to do so, they are very supportive of clinical staff in that way.

If you’re considering working here, I strongly advise you to proceed with caution. The leadership at this company consistently displayed unethical behavior, putting their own interests above both clients and staff. Decisions were often made behind closed doors, with little transparency or regard for ethical standards.

Client care suffered as a result. Staff were expected to manage large caseloads with minimal training, inadequate supervision, and virtually no administrative or emotional support. Burnout was common, and management’s response was typically dismissive — if they responded at all.

The workload was overwhelming, especially given the lack of resources and the unrealistic expectations. Instead of providing solutions or relief, leadership placed the blame on staff, which only fueled the already toxic culture.

Turnover was constant. New hires rarely stayed more than a few months, and those who did were often left picking up the pieces without recognition or compensation.

There are better places to grow professionally and make a meaningful impact. This company talks about values, but they do not walk the walk.


My experience at The People Concern was disappointing and ultimately unsustainable. In my opinion, the work environment was defined by constant micromanagement and leadership that often felt passive-aggressive rather than supportive. Instead of empowering staff, supervision frequently created added pressure without providing clear guidance or real solutions.

I also felt there were situations that came across as ethically questionable or inconsistent, which made it difficult to feel confident in the organization’s direction. The turnover rate during my time there was extremely high, and it often felt like staff were burning out faster than new team members could be trained. This left remaining employees overwhelmed and under-supported.

For the level of responsibility and emotional labor required, the pay did not feel competitive, nor did it match the intensity of the work. Overall, I left feeling that the agency needs significant improvement in leadership, communication, and employee support before it can truly live up to its mission. Especially wellness center. 

The Chiefs are egotistical and have horrible attitudes. They don't care about the overall well-being of their staff just the clients. There is a lot of favoritism and racism within the company. Management shows a total lack of respect for the Directors and Program Managers. People are handed management positions with little or no experience managing people. People are promised and then given jobs without the opportunity for others in the company to apply. There is no real checks and balance. Staff from the top all the way down are thrown into their work with little training and are penalized when they are not performing to the protocol. Pay sucks across the board and does not meet the industry standard. Very high turnover rate. Workplace culture is horrible. Staff in certain departments are allowed to not speak to clients. The clients are difficult to deal with but the staff is what makes it even worse. I had to leave due to the high level of stress and anxiety this place created for me.

I must begin by saying working with the homeless isn’t the first job anyone should take fresh out of college. The population is draining and good boundaries are essential to balance your home and work life. My colleagues and friendships formed were perhaps the best part of this job. If you can stick with it you’ll learn so much but like most non-profits the work load is unrealistic, the pay inadequate and caseloads overwhelming at times. The upper management lacks transparency at times and is so over worked themselves they aren’t much support. Training isn’t great you’re thrown out there to sink or swim. Supervision was excellent and informative. Low morale and high anxiety. Turnover is very high which is why the files are a mess and the clients are generally hostile. If you’re looking for a job in which you feel rewarded…this isn’t the place. In my two years I learned a lot so it wasn’t all a waste.
