The Washington Trust Company

Washington Trust sounded so promising, with so much room for growth. After facing lay-off from my company of 16 years, I resigned then started at WTC. Initial classes were very promising but when I started up at my branch they were expecting a veteran banker, not a trainee. There was never time for training and I was prevented from taking some of my required classes and receiving important training. Finally, in my final month I was called into my managers office and yelled at for not being fully trained and being behind in my classes (that my supervisor had not allowed me to attend). My supervisor sat beside me quietly and didn’t say a word. I was told then that maybe I wasn’t a good fit and she was concerned for me. By the next day at work, my supervisor was avoiding me. She signed me up for the classes, which she emailed to me and then sent me to work with customers and their accounts even though I had no experience yet. I spent the next month stressed out of my mind trying to teach myself everything. On my last day, after I had just helped a customer open up new accounts, I was called back to the office where they acknowledged that I was a hard worker and no, hadn’t made any mistakes, but still fired...then had to finish out my shift which was another 4 hours. It was a horrible experience.

Not every branch/managers are equal. Some branches are worse to work at more than others which is why there is so much turnover. The training is not what it could be and the new hires are usually in over their heads leaving the others to pick up the slack while managers stay in their offices. Many branches are short staffed, and in desperate need for bankers. Not a great track record with external hires either for upper level positions. You have to jump through many hoops to get promoted. If you're looking at this as just a job to have, then it's fine. If you're looking to advance your career (and aren't interested in being a branch manager) then look elsewhere. Good luck making enough money to pay rent working in retail banking unless you're a branch manager. There are some good aspects too but I don't think they pay bankers enough for what they do. At least the job security is there and the schedule is predictable. 

I only worked at the bank for a few months but found it to be stressful and not the best environment. You are expected to learn a lot at once in the training, and then when you are thrown in you find others are frustrated to work with you as you don’t know as much as them. Some managers are great, others are not, but if you are looking to change bank branches or go to another department you need to go through your manager, so if you don’t get along you may find it difficult. The pay is not worth the amount of work that you do, as you will be doing much more than tellers at other banks. Branches are often understaffed and it can be close to impossible to get the work done that they expect of you as you will find yourself doing the job of 3 people. There is insurance options and a 401k but you pay into it not the company. The job stability is there but ultimately the downfalls of the job outweigh the pros.

I have loved working for the Washington Trust team over the years.  I have made many friends over the years.  I have loved working as a team with my coworkers.  We all work together to get our responsibilities done before the bank closes at 5:00.  Everyone gets along and helps one another out.  The hardest part about my job is that we are often short handed and we are always doing extra work to keep things going on time. This creates added stress. The best part about my job is the time I've spent with my co-workers, both inside of work and outside.  I have seen weddings, births, and also sad times.  We are like a family.

The Washington Trust Company was a very big part of my life for seventeen years.
We were always very busy our typical day was usually fast paced.
I have learned a lot from Loan Operations Department and Our managers well some were tough to work for but other got the job done also.

Well over the years we had a big turn over but i had no problems with any of them, I'm pretty easy going.

I absolutely enjoyed working on Loan Documentation and Discharges on Commercial loans.

Adept in managing accounts payable; calculating payroll, wages, and payroll taxes; running checks; reconciling bank statements and general ledger; posting cash receipts; balancing accounts. Proficient in creating spreadsheets and forms; entering data into computer. Knowledge of stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. Well organized; detail-oriented; dependable; conscientious. Computer proficient.

Great Company, wonderful and friendly people to work with. A goal oriented bunch that considers customer's satisfaction a collective responsibility in their delivery of premiere service that yield results for their customers and stakeholders. Customers satisfaction at Washington Trust I believe is what gives purpose  and meaning to employees to do what they do every day.

It’s not what you know or how hard you work. It’s all in who you know and who you are friends with there. If you don’t play the game, you’ll fail. Unable to talk to HR about issues without them going to your supervisor. Cannot apply to internal jobs without letting your supervisor know first which creates animosity and can prevent you from moving forward.
