To start, I want to say that I loved the beginning 2-3 months of working here. I was able to become certified quickly through studying and being on the floor shadowing. The clients I worked with were wonderful and to say the least I will always have a soft spot in my heart for them. Once I started to hit 3+ months things started to go downhill though. 

The benefits weren’t even worth what they had made it out to be. Good technicians who worked every day would get no positive feedback even during/after consults. Not to mention when the company looked into why our devices weren’t working well enough for us to do our jobs, they decided that it wasn’t the awful low grade tablets that can barely run YouTube on them, it was the Wi-Fi that once doubled… nothing changed. They company tells you that if the program shuts you out, which it did daily, to use paper data and enter the data in once you were able to get into the program or just give it to your programmer to enter. Even though most programming technicians didn’t ever get their programming hours. 

The company had got bought out by another one and PTO became a huge problem, pushing most existing and even new technicians into the negatives (ex. -60 hours) which then you have to work out of because they expect you to work with no days off for months on end. To be able to get 8 hours of PTO back you would have to work 19 weeks without any days off. This is impossible and unrealistic for people in general. Not to mention the COVID restrictions they use now are very confusing and you’re never able to get ahold of anyone through the number they give you. The restrictions don’t include wearing a mask anymore, which became optional. They don’t require out sanitize a clients area after you’ve been in it with them. 

The technicians that work really hard and have been there for years get looked over for certain technicians because management has their favorites though they will always say otherwise. No one is on top of the hours needed of supervision and can take weeks for certain technicians to get the hours needed at the last minute. Certain higher ups have been known for not liking certain technicians and making it difficult for said technicians because of the way they may act/speak/treat them. 

The environment was okay if you stayed to yourself and never stepped up and said anything. Most technicians are cliquey which you’ll find almost everywhere but this was to the extent that data wasn’t being taken. There was more gossip then there was sessions being done. If you ended up not being liked then your life became much more difficult. Technicians would make you feel out of place, talk badly about you to others, and would make it so that you were outcasted. 

If you had a concern or a miscommunication with another technician then you might as well just leave it be. I’m the handbook it states to go directly to the person and speak to them about the issue but once you do that you automatically have become a “drama-starter”. If you try to take it to your upper management you should be careful of who you take it to because management is friends with most technicians in the first place. Being professional about these things is difficult because you might as well just keep it to yourself. 

I wouldn’t recommend working here because you will be burnt out quickly not only due to the job that is it, but because of the management, environment, and the technicians that are here. Kudos to all the hardworking and kind technicians and employees that do work here because you all are rockstars for sticking through it all. 

Coming into this line of work as a first job was made easy. There are so many support outlets for you to learn and grow. It's so easy to fall in love with this kind of job here. Topics are made well for you to understand with plenty of supervision. The leaders that you will come in contact with are great company and they whole fully mean well for you and your kiddos. The growth you see with clients is indescribable. If you want to feel fulfilled, this is a great job for you. 

Though, the staff has VERY prominent cliques. I'd witnessed many people being bullied out of the job, in fact. Working here feels like high school all over again. But if you treat it like what it is -a job- you will have very little encounters with this. If you walk away from the drama and not include yourself, they won't include you. It's easy to discuss certain matters with higher ups, though it is hard in aspects of drama. Some of these leaders are close friends with staff so it's difficult to know where work begins and where the drama ends. 

There are plenty of people there for you to learn from and grow a kinship with. If location wasn't an issue, I'd certainly work here again!  

BACA has been an amazing work experience for me. It has developed my skills as a behavior technician and as a future BCBA. I have had the privilege to work with multiple BCBAs in and outside of the company. BACA has given myself and many others the opportunities to train others within the clinic but also conduct parent trainings, work in home and transition clients to new environments. In the years they have been open they have developed into a company that really loves what they do and has put an immense amount of effort to ensure our clients are receiving the best care possible. 
With every company’s development there is expected bumps and learning experiences that have to be crossed. BACA has been able to grow as a company and offer great services to the community. 

I used to love coming to work everyday. The more I work at this place the more I hate it. Most of the lead techs don't do anything and suck at making the schedule. The management does nothing to those who call off constantly or are on their phones and just aren't doing their job. It is very frustrating for those who work their tail off and get treated no differently than those who slack off.  Some of the BCBAs don't know how to ask for help or say they don't know how to do something and reach out for help. They just make stuff up. Some of them treat the kids like they are dumb and don't add anything meaningful into the kids' programs. The pay sucks. You get $17 right off the bat with no prior experience or degrees. If you do have prior experience or degrees you don't get a pay increase. There are no paid holidays. You have to use PTO if you want to get paid for mandatory time off (holidays). If you are in supervision for your BCBA exam just expect minimal opportunities.

Lack of consistent hours due to cancellations/current covid policies. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
You will be working alone in the field through direct care as a Behavior Technician. Some supervisors (BCBAs) will respond to emails and calls promptly whereas others not so much. Its crucial that there is open and ongoing communication between BT and BCBA to ensure productivity and progress in cases.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Providing 1:1 direct care to youth experiencing mild/mod/severe ASD. Direct can look like child lead play while incorporating programs specific to each clients development and needs. Programs targeted can include verbal communication, independent living skills, social skills, gross and fine motor skills. Age appropriate play skills.

The teaching styles of the company and the way they perform their ABA procedures is pristine. It is very consistent and everyone is trained very well. Everyone follows through with their demands, and leniency is not an option. Normally leniency is a good thing, but not in the ABA world. With the kids, you have to be clear where the boundaries are, and the staff does a great job implementing this. They keep doing tasks until they get them right. I loved my BCBAs, but the clinical director was hard to get along with. She acted like she cared about staff, but she really didn't. I felt like we were the worker bees, and she was the queen bee. She had no sympathy or understanding. If you were rushed to the ER, the only thing she cared about was you missing work. If your car breaks down, you better find a way to get there even if you have to walk.

As a behavior technician you help teach skills to children with autism to help them in their everyday life. Each client has individualized goals that you are trained to work on. You learn how to improve areas of skill deficits in children's lives. There is support staff that helps train you with how to implement your job responsibilities. Training and learning is ongoing and the support is great. The technicians have high energy and have fun while teaching. The job can be hard when there are overwhelming moments, but looking back it is always rewarding. You get to have a huge impact on not only a child's life but the life of their family. There are other ABA center, but this centers has highly qualified individuals serving as senior staff to help train and there is a strong mission of serving the autism community. 

ABA therapy is more than just working with kids. We are teaching them life skills that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. It is an intense job that requires a lot of physical activity and patience. Although this job can be difficult, it is so rewarding. Hearing a kid's first word, watching them achieve something that took them forever to learn, and so much more. We are NOT a babysitting company - we change lives. BACA itself has such an uplifting culture. We support one another, celebrate the triumphs together, and understand the hard days. It is a fantastic place to work, if you are willing to put in the effort. BACA provides all training necessary. 

I have worked for many different organizations, both within the field of ABA and outside. To me, what makes BACA the BEST company is a balance of getting to support meaningful outcomes for our patients, an immense amount of support from supervisors/leaders, and being a part of a team that builds me up every day. I have felt with other companies that I either love what I do, or I love the people I work with, but never both. At BACA, both hold true! This work is hugely meaningful to me, and I could not ask to be a part of a better team. I look forward to coming to work each and every day!

This company's BCBAs and Management are standoffish. When beginning as an RBT at BACA, I had very little supervision from BCBAs for 2 months. There is a hierarchy of RBTs and the upper level RBTs do the work of the BCBA, yet the BCBAs still do not find the adequate amount of time to do supervision for their RBTS for proper training. They are neglectful in the sense of the priorities and best interest of the client. There is extremely high expectations  of the RBTs and not enough support. If you have a degree, you will still make $16/hr. even when showing competence and diligence.
