As someone who has no problem speaking their mind, I'd love to tell you exactly how I feel about The Behavior Train. 

I had an overall wonderful experience working at The Behavior Train for nearly three years, and I mean that. No company is perfect, and there is always room for improvement, but I’m giving a 5-star rating anyway, because I’ve had a lot of jobs, and the Behavior Train tops the list for me. Buckle up and I’ll tell you exactly why,  including both the strengths and the weaknesses:

Leadership was very high-quality overall, and genuinely interested in our opinions as staff on various issues large and small. There was overall open and friendly communication that built a foundation of trust. They even brought up financial breakdowns in staff meetings sometimes to talk about where the money goes, which I thought was awesome in terms of transparency. 

My bosses made me feel valued as an employee, and I know for a fact they worked hard to create and sustain a great team culture. I remember we had a work group chat solely focused on encouragement and shared positivity to support one another. It was used frequently. The Behavior Train excels at choosing good people. And the leaders really do model the behavior they wish to see, which is great leadership to me. 

The work itself was rewarding, given the impact on clients’ progress. It is difficult if you are not suited for it, as you must have great patience, flexibility, etc. I think my supervisors did a great job of training me and helping me to engage in cases involving multiple stakeholders - the client, the family, the other services providers (PT, OT, SLP). I liked that the people I worked with were interested in trauma-informed care, working in an interdisciplinary clinic, and would listen to me if I brought up an ethical concern. They really did care about the whole child, not just making money off a service. Being a family-run clinic started by parents instead of venture-capitalists probably makes a difference here. 

The Behavior Train worked to bring in health insurance and better PTO systems while I was there - they were always making improvements. The onboarding and training process was good, too, involving shadowing and working with another, more experienced technician. They took care not to ‘throw you to the wolves’ so to speak, if you were brand new or not yet confident in handling cases with more severe behaviors or aggression. This was just another way that I felt cared for and seen as a human being, not just a cog in the machine that was expected to meet any and all demands placed upon it.

Another important point: The BCBAs were very responsive and extremely supportive, which I have heard is not always the case in every ABA clinic out there. If I needed help, I would get it. If the case needed changing, it would happen in a reasonable timeframe. 

The pain points? In my time, the company was smaller but expanding rapidly into multiple clinics. This involved its own challenges and high administrative workloads (which could cause little things to slip). While the pay was decent for our area, it could have been better, but industry-wide factors made it challenging to earn a higher income without more accessible financial support from health insurers. It was not really a company issue, in my opinion. We were in a lower cost of living area, anyway. I just think the profession as a whole needs higher pay - hazard pay, essentially. And regular inflation adjustments never hurt.
 
The cancellation policy also made it difficult to get consistent hours at times, though leadership did offer some non-clinical work where possible, which was good. I think the job role should be restructured to reliably, as a matter of course, involve more non-clinical time, but that is again an industry issue, not a Behavior Train issue. I remember how, at times, it felt a little impossible to do required paperwork and clean/close the session with certain clients, like those who were new, did not have independent play skills yet, or struggled with high rate attention seeking behaviors that could compromise their safety if not watched at literally all times. 

Another area for growth included having ever more resources for mental health support or Employee Assistance Program (EAP)-type services, which could help with burnout prevention, especially in such a high-demand role. Even just being encouraged to use hotlines or chatlines and being provided the information for them can be helpful. Keep in mind, this could have changed in the three years that I have not been working here, though. Scheduling with guaranteed short breaks between clients would have also been pretty incredible, but scheduling is a logistic nightmare as it is. We did have short lunch breaks at one point, but we advocated for longer ones, and ultimately got longer ones. Managing caseloads to make sure they are balanced was something the bosses did care about for sure, but there might room to finesse this even more with more regular examinations of workload volume, case intensity, injury tracking systems for staff, etc.

All in all, here’s my take from my experience: The Behavior Train is a well-run, compassionate organization that values employee input, listens, and actively works to improve the work environment and the services it offers. I highly recommend it to anyone passionate about making a difference in clients’ lives, and not to be corny, but I’m really grateful for my time there. They even gave me a reference for graduate school :) I will always be glad I got to work at the Behavior Train.


The best part of my job here was relationship with co-workers. It truly felt like we were a family and we always had each others backs, especially with high acuity clients. I also loved working with the clients, it was very rewarding to see hard work pay off. What I did not enjoy was the overall treatment of our entire clinic staff by the management. There were several meetings I remember with the whole team plus management where the concerns of the techs did not appear to be heard or received. Instead it felt as though concerns regarding pay and scheduling were minimized in favor of discussing other aspects of the job that the techs were not as concerned about. I also was told I would receive a raise after the probationary period, which I never received. Additionally, hours were never guaranteed due to client scheduling cancellations. 

The clients, techs, and BCBAs are great and supportive. However, the ownership of the company gives the place a poor review. Upon hiring you are told of raises during time periods and after becoming certified, but when the time comes they give you the run around and avoid it as much as possible. They are passive aggressive to staff, and become offended when presented with constructive criticism. When faced with constructive criticism by staff members, they lie and put blame on the BCBAs who do everything in their power to support staff to make up for the poor ownership (proof of conversations documented). They allow certain clients to be late frequently to avoid conflict with parents which puts stress upon clients and staff. Also, if a job posts states “drama free work environment” big red flag. 

TBT is a company that genuinely values its employees. As a BCBA and parent-owned organization, not influenced by private equity, TBT is deeply committed to creating opportunities and fostering a supportive, family-like atmosphere. My experience as a past employee was incredible—TBT opened doors for me that I hadn’t even imagined, and I was consistently impressed by the quality and dedication of the team. TBT sets the standard in ABA by building an exceptional environment for both staff and clients, and they expect top-notch care from their RBTs. I wish more ABA companies would follow their model. If I return to my home state, TBT would be my first choice.

This has been the best place I have ever worked! The ownership and the management are both wonderful to work for! They have great culture and values! They always help in any way they possibly can. Your hard work pays off! Seeing your clients grow and succeeded is so rewarding! A great place for you to grow as an individual as well! I have learned so much from working here and it has impacted my life for the better. This company and the team I worked with will always have a special place in my heart!


if your looking for a fun and supportive work environment this is for you! management did NOT lie saying how supportive the entire clinic is of each other during the hiring process. the BCBAs were amazing at my clinic, even as i was struggling mentally they had my back and were able to adjust my caseload to accommodate! i loved this job so much and it was very difficult to leave. i still keep in contact with many of my coworkers. i loved that work did not feel like a chore, everyone was always smiling and excited to see each other. client wise all the staff were happy to help if i was ever struggling with a client or had questions. everyone was well educated on ABA as well! 

My BCBA supervisor was FANTASTIC and the team I worked with was supportive and had my back. I loved getting to work with the population and see the growth the kids made. This was my favorite job and it helped me prepare for my career in special education. Like any job with multiple levels of management, there was a disconnect between the owners and the local office staff at times, but the huge majority of the time was a positive experience. 

There is a strong correlation of favoritism within the workplace. You may be fired without being talked to as to why, or have a conversation of the situation that may have taken place to present your side of an issue. There is also not enough hands on training for those that are new to the field. If you express that you are uncomfortable with a client and do not feel confident in working with them, it is ignored. I did not enjoy my time at this place of business. 

Overall, TBT Monroe is an amazing and supportive place to work. The job can be difficult at times, but the support from supervising staff make a world of difference! I will say a con is the pay isn’t great and when a client cancels, you don’t work. They do try their best to give you your minimum hours when cancellations occur, but it can be difficult! 100% worth it though to see the amount of impact you make on the client’s lives

If your looking to get into the ABA field, The Behavior Train is THE best place in this area to work for without a doubt. They never once made me feel compromised ethically. You also cannot beat the company culture. Everyone looks out for each other and just generally enjoys working with one another. It is a warm, supportive work place that you just don't see a lot.
