"Always assume positive intent" is this company's mantra. And they mean it. This is a supportive, kind, compassionate group of caregivers. Field nursing--in the patient's homes--is the definition of autonomy, so you absolutely must be confident and flexible. Unlike in the hospital, there are no administration-mandated scripts and no fetching of snacks for entitled family members (unless you want to). As a hospice nurse you are truly the eyes and ears of the doctor/NP. You have the time to listen to patients and to actually be a nurse--you know, what we went to nursing school to do: Foleys, pain and n/v management, wound care, etc. This company has an outstanding training program and managers who check-in with you. Plus your patients and their families appreciate you, and... wait for it: They even thank you.
Expect a lot of driving and the occasional unpleasant interactions with overwhelmed SNF nursing staff. Also, you have to be comfortable listening (meaning, you are not talking) to grieving patients and family members, and of course, with what dying and death actually looks like.

Hospice nursing is a tough job and management at this company does not value good staff. This is evident in the recent mass exodus of employees and executive turnover. Consequently, patients suffer from long waits and inconsistent care. This is heart-breaking to witness on the front lines... . Well-meaning clinical staff are crippled by incompetent, over-worked, cliquish managers—they are nice to your face, but only look out for themselves. I watched these managers consistently throw good nurses under the bus. Most of the best and brightest know this and have left or have a plan in place. Favorite case managers and coddled CNAs (presumably somehow embroiled in the recent unionization drama) are allowed very rude, insubordinate behavior while others are not even allowed to stand up for themselves. Most systems and processes are broken or outdated here. Best to stay away: Toxic.

VERY corporate - inconsistent direction from managers, if you are supportive of your colleagues and fairness you will be fingered and thrown under the bus - front line caregivers CNAs, Social Workers, Chaplains, Nurses are Mostly FANTASTIC (some use their personal opinions or beliefs in careplanning and some are snakes in the grass) - the company environment is unsupportive and a good ole girl network - one man in clinical management -no work life balance - employees are resources to be used up and and out - non renewable - lip service to work life balance and to "positive intent" not actually practiced - pay is not market value, the Care Synergy CEO is paid way too much for a non-profit organization (s) and the focus is how to get more done with fewer people vs quality of care - inconsistent quality of care to home patients vs facility patients and inadequate training for new clinical employees - in the end patient care suffers -

Worked with some of the best people at this job and feel blessed to have cared for the clients that I got to care for. Paper charting when I got there which is way behind the times, and when they switched to (only partially) electronic, it was a disaster with a huge lack of support from upper management who pushed for the change. Lots of room for errors with the charting and medication management. Lots of pushing from upper management to accept inappropriate admissions, pushing to change ratios for nurses to take care of more patients, pushing to take on more duties. Upper management did not listen to feedback from those in patient care. Very, very deep divide between staff who are in patient care and those who are not. I truly hope there is a change towards the positive there because hospice truly is such a meaningful place, and the clients and caregivers deserve to feel that all the time. 

Every hospice company has its pros and cons. The Denver Hospice's good aspects FAR outweigh the cons. It is truly mission based hospice care provided in the way a non-profit is able to. The leadership team genuinely cares about the team members and provides great support. Education of team members is a priority and the education department is superb. There is a focus on doing things the right way so you know that your job is not at risk from survey difficiencies or Medicare audits. The in-patient care center is amazing and serves the most vulnerable with the compassion and expertise they deserve. One of the best parts about working here is the job security; you will not be purchased by a large national organization that will undermine your hospice  mission. 

Hospice work brought out the best in my professional growth. I adored my patients, their families, and my co-workers. Even long hours in the office and on the road, being on-call 24 hours a month, and high caseloads felt bearable and purposeful with the support of the team. Over the last year, the team-oriented TDH community that I was proud to serve has shifted in a sad way toward profit-minded competition. Management's action and attitude has become skeptical and derisive. It's really surprising and sad. I hope they can learn to walk in the light again and bring more to the lives of employees.

The good - I have a wonderful clinical manager who really looks out for me and fellow co-workers, Patients do get the best care as far as equipment and supplies. It has been a great place to work the past few years. I have never worked with a better group of Co-workers that include CNA, RN's Social Workers and Chaplains and Dr.'s. Everyone has outstanding character and loves what they do.

The bad - Benefits are not good from PTO to Health Insurance. Pay rate is below market and now almost all staff is put on salary with no OT or OT compensation. New Management Company called Care Synergy has come and changed job culture and it has become a very challenging place to work with high caseloads and no compensation.

I learned the art of collaboration and the significance of diverse professional minds converging together to meet one goal 
The hardest part of the job was being present with folks loosing their loved ones in a gradual and sometimes most drastic manner.
The most enjoyable part of my work was providing support and been present with families at a difficult period in their lifves. I enjoyed offering reassuring prayers, scripture and encouragement to a dying patient. 
The culture at the Denver Hospice was sometimes accepting. But other times very demanding and failure by management to recognize the stress and frustrations of field staff.

I worked in several positions at the company.  The partition I started in had an amazing manager who looked out for the team.  Every other position I was in had no security and was shown little value.  I was "loaned" out to other departments and teams constantly and told not to worry that I would get hours.  Yes I got hours but also found conflict between departments I was working in.  Management showed little value of employees.   Co workerers were very enmeshed and gossipy. Management kept piling on work with no hope of getting help.

With the right manager in the company, can be very worth time.  Pay and benefits on par

I worked for TDH for almost 9 years and towards the end iit became very clear that I was simply an employee sitting my desk and not a valued member of the organization. I was easily replaceable, although my years of experience and dedication to the job and patients/family were always clear.

Hospice work as a whole is powerful and became my works purpose but working for TDH almost made me consider otherwise. It all comes down to poor management, pressure of numbers and the census, difficult team members and little upper management support.
