As with most community mental health positions, we tend to see parts of the community that most don't know exist, in turn, we also have the privilege to see some of the greatest transformations within our community that would otherwise be shadowed or stifled by the stigma surrounding mental health. This organization seeks to destroy stigma and does a great job serving our community. Those that are successful working in this organization are thoroughly vetted before employment and most of the interview process is surrounding your problem solving skills in various situations. Being able to truly meet someone where they are at in their mental health journey, requires more than textbook knowledge, you need compassion, to set bias-aside, and to genuinely  encourage others to see the benefit in being a part of their own recovery in an awesome person centered model. Sometimes their speed in recovery does not match the speed you would desire for them, especially if you are the type to want to see results ASAP. Patience is important.

I started work here six months before the Covid19 pandemic and throughout the pandemic, serving in a community, field based case management position, that had the opportunity to also continue services via telehealth. We were considered essential front line workers in our community and worked throughout. While we do great things for our community, sometimes the organization falls short on taking care of their employees, but to their credit it is most often times directly related to community funding, so they do not shoulder that burden alone. During the pandemic, sick pay was touch and go, unfortunately for me I fell victim to covid during the weeks/months that covid sick pay was not offered, so I went on leave without pay. I was fortunate to manage financially by other means, but I did see some colleagues choose to leave the organization due to the inconsistency that did not help when leave was forced due to CDC guidelines for quarantining. 

They encourage you to save your PTO for emergency illness, in lieu of actual sick time benefits (some employees here were grandfathered in with earned Emergency Sick Leave benefits, however.) You earn your PTO as you go, starting at 2.5 hours every 40 hour week (during the first year, increasing annually), with two VIP days a year, which is considered a bonus to use for holidays not recognized by the agency, personal time or sick leave. They tend to be more reactive than proactive when it comes to employees, case in point, requesting feedback usually happens after an event has taken place, such as multiple people leaving a department in a short period of time. However, I do see this changing, and it is a welcomed change throughout the organization. They have new, fresh talent and promoted within to meet these needs.

The most enjoyable part of my job has been watching my clients transform through their own work and determination, while also being given credit for the support and resource linkage I have provided. My team throughout my time here, has been stellar. Attitude is everything and knowing how to manage your time and utilize your resources usually makes the difference between being productive and struggling.

The hardest part of the job, is making time for self care and to not take work home physically and mentally. Self-care is different for everyone, but so important.

In your interview ask any question you want, you have nothing to lose, you didn't have the job when you arrived and it isn't guaranteed you will have it when you leave the interview. Ask them "How will hiring me, help solve a problem for you in this department?" Turn the interview into a conversation and you will be able to showcase your rapport building skills, versus a Q&A. This will also show you the kind of manager you will be working under. 

Overall, I do not think this is a horrible place to work, but I felt like it was an overwhelming amount of work. To succeed, you must be able to type and talk/provide interventions to clients at the same time. (There is no way around that). In addition, you need to have excellent (and I mean beyond excellent) organization and time management skills to be able to track ALL the paperwork and resource requirements for EACH client. You get to schedule and map out your whole day. This is nice because it offers a lot of flexibility and personal control in what you do on a daily basis, but is also means that you need to have a good amount of discipline to ensure you get everything done on your checklist. There is no time for slacking off and expect to always be on the go. There is a very big emphasis on meeting your numbers and meeting strict deadlines. This is not a job for everyone, which is why there is a high turn over rate. You either do super great at this job and exceed expectations or you don't stay here long.

You spend majority of your time out in the field, which means that you don't interact with co-workers on a daily basis. However, you do see them at random moments in the office, at staff meetings, or celebratory gatherings. Everyone is really nice and helpful. I liked all the people that I worked with. You do talk to your superior regularly and they are almost always available to help you. One of the pros, it that I feel like the staff was friendly and supported you.

A typical day usually consists of 15 minute checks on patients, picking up their food, washing the trays, making discharge beds, being apart of skin assessments, transporting patients to various locations and doing patient admissions. When not doing these things you're able to chill in the Milieu watching movies with the patients. The job itself is pretty easy and straightforward. If you're looking to build strong relationships with staff or even basic trust in co-workers or superiors for support, this is NOT the place! The majority of RN's treat you like dung on their shoe, they will bad-mouth you, each other and the patients any chance they get. The other PNA's aren't much better. One in particular is miserable so she makes other's miserable and got an RN fired in retaliation of her being required to follow new rules. One RN looks up all of the patients on FB so she can share it around and make fun or talk smack. The communication here is awful most of the time! RN's will "snitch" on you for petty things instead of addressing issues with you directly so you can fix it. There is no professionalism among staff, especially language with the RN's but if that happens with a PNA they will immediately report you. There is definitely favoritism across the board. The few nurses that actually do care have a great work ethic and are genuinely kind people but they are few and far between. The majority sit behind their computers and can't be bothered to interact with the patients, instead they gossip or look for things to complain about.

This was one of the least favorable job experiences I’ve ever had.  It feels like big brother is always watching you from the first day of orientation. Senior Management is located in the C Suite of the Conroe building and they never make themselves available, unless it’s by email (and usually only to critique your work, or ask you to help at another location). 

The truly negative part of the experience had to do with the culture though. Senior Management allows for zero flexibility with schedules. Salaried positions are treated more like hourly positions, minus the ability to gain overtime (or flex your schedule for that matter). Totally archaic way to manage. 

Everyone that works there seems so disingenuous and totally phony. Walking on eggshells everyday is the norm. The board needs to take a hard look at how this place is run. Human Resources seems to operate more like a corporate compliance department.  There is constant encouragement to report your colleagues. 

The caseload size is unbearable. Management hasn’t seemed to make the connection that overworked, burnt-out employees leads to resignations (not longevity).  For a company that’s suppose to care about mental health, they sure do miss the mark with their employees.



This was a chaotic place to work. I did much driving to see mentally ill people which was wear & tear on my car every day, but they reimbursed me for the mileage. Sometimes the mileage check got lost because I was new and the lady who does the check said I didn't fill my form out right. I had to track it down. But eventually got it so it was good in the end.

More about the driving. They will let you use a Tri-county car if you need to, so you don't have to worry if your car is in the shop from all the driving. Which is a big plus. You can still work because they will give you a car. 

One thing that bothered me. They didn't have enough money to pay every body all the time, so they would hassle people until they quit. Then they would leave the positions open until they could afford to hire new people again. So here's the bad part. You could do the work of two or three people or get a bunch of people that needed every thing done that nobody had done in a long time. It's not really what I went to college for! Unprofessional, bad management.

What I learned from this job is that I need a more professional work environment to be happy at my job.

I am a current employee and I love my job. It allows me to grow clinically and professionally as I work on my Masters and LPC. Working with the clients are great, and I like being able to set my own schedule. No micromanagement being that I work in the field which is great for me. I see lots of people complaining about the required monthly units for billable time with the clients. Although we are helping the clients this is still a business. How do we bring in revenue if we don’t bill? I always get my units each month and it’s not hard to do. If you spend a lot of time working with your clients, the billable time is easy to obtain. I am thankful for my job giving me an opportunity to work in a clinical role with just a bachelors degree. Most places want a masters or higher. Lastly, being able to make a lasting impression with clients and helping them achieve their goals is the biggest reward.

This job taught me a lot about case management, and scheduling. The most enjoyable part was helping clients that could not help themselves. I learned more about health insurance claims, medications and diagnosis.

The bad part is that they wanted you to mainly just talk to the clients about their mental state which would sometimes irritate them to talk about that every time that you meet, especially if they have been seeing over three different case managers in the past two months. Even if you sit with them and talk to them for hours you cant bill them for that time because you are not teaching any "skills" which is really messed up if you and the client have great conversations without talking about their mental illnesses.

The nosey HR lady will try to find anything to fire you for especially if their funding budget is low.

Overall, the job is not really worth it for the wear and tear on your car, but you meet a lot of great clients that you tend to become attached too.

The interviewers failed to mention significant job duties for this position. As a AMHS you must help fill out paperwork for public assistance, become a client rep payee and responsible for paying the client bills, or sit at the SSA office for hours, provide some transportation in your private vehicle( I did not take issue with this until I found out about possible bed bugs), inter homes or be around clients with bedbugs. The panel presented this position as providing life skills to the clients, which in theory it is, but failed to mention the rest. You MUST HAVE 80 units(1unit =15 min) a week and you have no control if your client see you or not.  I would work at this agency again but in a different role. I am not trying to sway anyone from this position; I want you to be aware of what you are signing up for, which was not afforded to me. I would have never left my previous employer for this role.

You will get a ton of experience when working here. It will specially help with figuring out if you want to go into the mental health field in the long run as well as go high up in your education. HOWEVER, you WILL be worked to the bone.  You get PTO hours, not days. You get a total of 2 personal days each fiscal year, plus whatever hours you manage to accumulate for your PTO. If you run out of PTO you MUST take LWOP. You will have caseloads that are 28+ people. If you are spanish speaking and they have a shortage you WILL get more people. The supervisors are really nice and my particular supervisor was really understanding of the burn out happening with her employees. You will learn a lot and make connections with these children. Come prepared to learn and work till you drop.

Huge turn around once the fresh out of college groups burn out after 6 months to a yr. Pay is lower than expected for what they ask in qualification requirements however the benefits are decent. There are opportunities to earn bonuses annually however individually we have little control of this. People on the same team are not always trained the same way leading to differences in applying standard expectations. You can report someone's wrong doing but if they are liked by management nothing will happen and you'll end up looking like the problem. Little chance for moving up within your dept because current supervisors can't move up either.
