Trumpet Behavioral Health

I learned a lot about ABA from TBH. The BCBAs appear passionate about their work. However the scheduling process is slow and inefficient and BCBAs are expected to pick up the slack. Upper management are never available to speak with parents when parents have difficult questions about insurance, payments, schedules, etc. and instead will email whenever it is convenient for them. 

The BCBAs were moved from salaried to hourly positions once the pandemic began. The BCBAs were still expected to perform at the same level even without pay. The BCBAs are allocated 10% of their billable time towards admin and office work. So for me with only 2 active clients I got about 15 minutes a day for admin and office tasks and you may only get that time. On some days emails can be checked and responded to in the 15 minutes provided, but on most days they require more time and attention it order to give a quality response. If you can't complete your tasks you can ask senior bcbas for help, but they are also struggling and don't really have the time to help, and if they are helping they most likely aren't getting paid for that time. 

TBH utilizes Google drive. They have many resources for BCBAs. They also have too many spreadsheets as an attempt to track and document team on boarding, client progress, clients quality assurance, hr issues, etc and with all locations being able to access the spreadsheets at the same time Google drive becomes very slow and inefficient while you're in the field. It is quicker to connect the work provided  dell laptops to a wired internet connection while at home than to use the mobile Hotspot provided. Which means more time working without getting paid. They strongly encourage you to do admin and check your emails during overlaps with clients as a way to get around paying you for your work. As a result many RBTs don't get the quality feedback and attention they deserve from the bcba. 

Scheduling is slow and inefficient. In my onboarding the bcbas were told that the family is contacted by a team of people first so by the time they get to you you will need to review the parent handbook and begin the parent interview. However this never happens. When I speak with the parents they tell me I am the only one who has ever reached out, so the majority of the meeting becomes signing papers and explaining ABA.  Patients are unaware of their scheduling changes and it is expected that the bcba communicate the changes. Example: BCBA is in an overlap from 3pm to 6pm (indicated on central reach scheduling platform ) and a scheduler will email the bcba (at 250pm) and ask that bcba to inform another patient their session at 4pm that day is cancelled or changed in some way... well how can the bcba do that? I am not constantly checking emails. 

(I don't think doctors or plumbers ever have to deal with these issues, so I don't understand why BCBAs do. We are professionals. We deserve to have our time valued. We need schedulers and office staff who will reach out to patients about scheduling changes and answer their general questions.  We need upper management to be visible and present during busy times. And if that can't happen we need to get paid for the work we do including calling patients).

If it weren't for the RBTs and BCBAs I don't know if I would've stayed as long as I did. 

I did not feel prepared to succeed in my position at all. I completed the online training and completed the competency assessment (which was very quick) and suddenly I was given a tablet and scheduled to work with children. I wasn’t technically certified as an RBT yet so I thought it was strange, but figured if I would be shadowing for a while it would be okay and maybe that was normal. However, my expectations were not met and I felt that it was unethical to work with clients who are paying for these services when I am not qualified or properly trained. In addition, the equipment I received was never properly set up because tech support could not set it up in time for my appointments with clients. I also did not receive any guidance on how to set up my device to actually use it to collect data during shift. I felt ill equipped when working and had to use my personal phone to collect data on clients rather than the equipment provided. I think the company needs to put more emphasis on training new employees before rushing them to work independently. They also need to ensure their new employees are provided proper equipment that works in time for appointments, otherwise what is the point in bringing a tablet that does not work? It makes it look as if the company only cares about making money rather than ensuring they are providing quality work. I only received about 2 hours of shadowing before I was left to work by myself with clients, which concerned me. I felt this was not the right position for me and it was a major disservice to the paying clientele to have me pushed to be on my own so quickly without any guidance. I think there is a lack of communication and organization on the management that could be improved when helping new employees adjust to working there. Another major concern is the safety consideration when it comes to COVID-19 transference. I did not feel safe working in the household when clients (parents) are not required to wear masks. Another concern is the level of professionalism from staff. When I did quit, I did so in a professional manner and expected the same treatment. However I did not receive a professional response back or receive any further information about whether there was anything else I needed to do on my part when I asked. It seemed that the supervisor was upset/angry and did not want to respond back and just left me hanging intentionally. This lack of professionalism confirmed that I made the right choice in leaving because of the type of work environment that was exemplified by someone who represents the company. I most likely would not have enjoyed working there. This is just my experience and hopefully this helps future employees in making their decision to work here.

I’ll start with some of the very few pros. My favorite part was the kids and the families. You really do become like family and it’s very rewarding watching how much the kiddos progress over time. Some of the therapists and clinicians were great and some I became good friends with after working there for quite some time. Unfortunately those are the only pros. I started December of 2019 right before the pandemic and that messed up a lot of things. I didn’t get much hands on experience or training with a majority of sessions cancelled because of the pandemic and was thrown into sessions and direct therapy all by myself. All of my sessions moved to in homes during lockdown which was not ideal because all of the homes I went to were really dirty and I didn’t feel comfortable in a dirty place especially while trying to work. Pay isn’t great and there are rarely any benefits. I remember them saying we would have to put in PTO 6 weeks in advance but families would cancel the day of and we wouldn’t get paid unless we did a cancellation session which wasn’t worth it. Sometimes they’d cancel for a whole week and there would be no pay. Schedules were messy. I would have one session end right at 4 and another client coming at 4. The parent would always be late and interfere with my other session. It would not give me any time to set up for my next session. Which made me look unprofessional unfortunately. Not to mention it took me over a year to get my RBT certification. I was scheduled for my exam the day I had the most sessions when they should have been canceled. I didn’t get any instructions on how the exam process works. The exam was at 6pm and the doors to the Pearson building was locked and I was stuck. I couldn’t retake my exam till 6 months later which was ridiculous. Driving to some of my in homes were a pain because some were really far(I had to drive almost 30 minutes with the highway for one of my clients). There is no reimbursement for gas. Some sessions were great some were not. I still have scars from the kids hitting me or biting me. Which I was aware of when I applied but it still it takes a lot of patience to deal with it. As a company Trumpet lacks professionalism and they simply don’t care about their employees. That’s why there is a huge turnover of therapists. Please consider another ABA company. 

     I have been an employee with Trumpet for just over 7 years. I started out as a Therapist in our Arizona Locations, and moved up in the company  in our Operations department. Since day one, I have always felt a sense of purpose with the work we do for our kiddo, and (for the most part) never felt unhappy to go to work. 
     Throughout my time with this company, there have been multiple chages in leadership (3 I think so far) and each CEO and Leadshership team has been the right fit, for that moment in Trumpets life. Our Current CEO is also a team memeber starting as a thearpist, and moved up thoughout the years, so he is very well rounded in the field of ABA, and knows on a personal level how each job works within the company, which I feel makes him a great resource to all staff. Not only is he knowledable, but is one of the most easy/accessable CEO I have had the pleasure to work with (along with all of the Executive leadership).
     Trumpet provides great training for our Clinicial staff, RBT supervisions and continuing Education opportunities for Clinician. There are great benefits and a wonderful Team Memeber Relation program which provides center parties, snacks and drinks along with other reinforcers that each individual center appreciates.
     The one thing that I think could use improvement is compensation. Overall, I believe pay is fair according to locations (could alwalys improve espeicially with the rise is livings costs); however extra pay such as milage, is not up to par, which is one of the reasons why I  unfortunatley have decided to leave.

Overall Trumpet Behavioral health is a challenging, Fun, teamwork orientated company across the board, and I encourage anyone who is wanting to get thier foot into the door of ABA, to consider Trumpet Behavioral Health.


Overall I enjoy my work but the interviewer lied to me about benefits and job information. the HDHP medical plan is the least expensive I have had on a job in years! However, I was told directly in my interview there are paid time off accruals, paid holidays off, and that my position would be center-based. We do not get paid holidays but if you are on a Guaranteed Schedule Program you receive your regular weekly pay if the center is closed for a holiday or other reason out of your control. You accrue PERSONAL days, but no paid time off, and when you take a personal day you are not paid for that day and you are NOT guaranteed your full regular weekly hours. You are prorated. So if your normal hours are 30 hours per week and you have a personal day off, you are guaranteed pay of 24 hours for that week (you lose the 6 hours for the missed day). Your big reward is you do not get a write up. You do accrue paid sick hours throughout the year so if you get burned out just wait for a headcold to roll around and you can get a break without losing pay. Also, there is no center based or in-home based after all, you work where they put you. There is also almost no support or communication between therapists, so if you are sent in-home for a session you go in blind usually, and if there is anything you need to know about what the family specifically expects in home or particular behaviors you should know about there is a good chance no one will tell you. Also new and credentialed RBTs do not get much on the job training.

I have worked for a couple of very similar companies doing in-home ABA as a BCBA, and Trumpet is by far my best experience.

I work in a newer location, so there is a lot of responsibility with supporting growth of the region. I see this as a positive experience, as I get a lot of freedom for creativity with developing my management style and gaining new skills rather than just case management. They also easily agreed to my salary requirement, plus options to earn bonuses.

We work in a huge area with few staff, so we drive A LOT, but we are compensated for drive time. As a BCBA/case manager, I am alotted a good amount of time to supervise staff in sessions which is helpful to the quality of services.

The upper management and other supporting staff are very friendly and communicate frequently. Things get shifted around and change quickly as it is a growing organization, and it can be confusing at times to understand who is responsible for what. It takes quite a bit of effort, time, and technical ability with all of the different network systems they use to really work efficiently.

We have frequent online conference meetings for communications across regions and CEU events. Upper management are experienced clinical directors with great skills to share and very supportive and encouraging. 

I have to agree with other reviewers here that the scheduling system could use some help. The schedulers do the job, it's just the way the company has things set up makes communication between staff and schedulers SO SLOW. 

The company provides generous budget for everything needed to support the staff and client needs and nice office space. We will later be opening a clinic, and I am looking forward to continued growth of the company and my role in the organization.

I started at Trumpet totally entry level with a little experience working with kids. It took a lot of getting used to, but I was excited and happy with my new job. Around September 2017 they started making changes to the Trumpet policy. They always say "clients first" and I guess they really mean it when they try to get so many kids services without having adequate staffing. When I first started I had two clients at trumpet for a total of 10-15 hours a week once things started getting finalized. And it stayed that way for a good 5 months until I started getting a bunch of new kids a lot of hours (which is good!). The problem is that Trumpet has a high turnover rate, so new therapists get assigned to new kids, and when that therapist leaves there becomes more kids than therapists available. I personally have a client that has only had me as a therapist for six months when kids should have at least two therapists. I have also had lots of Clinicians and Associate Clinicians moving from client to client, which makes it hard to keep programming the same and communication with them even more difficult. Some kids have been put on the back burner, sitting with mastered programs and no plans for new targets, and still no communications from clinicians to therapists. In my opinion, Trumpet seems to only care about the money, not the kids or their employees. And did I mention time off requests must be made about 2 months in advance? Ridiculous!
All in All, though, working with the kids is awesome. I love working with them and getting to know the families. it's not the right job for everyone, but if you're up to a little challenge, I think you'll come to love it as well.

- we are not paid during this pandemic, they only sent us a link on how to file for the colorado unemployment. 
- even though the government imposed a stay-at-home order, the management still kept the center opened for therapy sessions, despite the rising number of coronavirus cases in the state. they only closed the centers after weeks.
- yes, they closed the centers but they are still conducting home therapy sessions EVEN DURING THIS PANDEMIC. 
- they don't care about their employees, just their clients. 
- when clients cancel therapy sessions, there's nothing you can do about it. they won't do anything about it too and they wont pay you. I had one client who cancelled all therapy sessions in a month, and they didn't even bother to find me another client. that means NO PAY FOR ME THE WHOLE MONTH! so inconsiderate! 
- they pay you minimum wage for your online trainings and shadow sessions (even if you already have a physical contact with the client)
- people there, mostly the RBTs are like high school kids, they always gossip about the new hires. they look at the new people with a "what are you doing here?" look. which is so disrespectful. they do not welcome you and think that they are "higher" than you because they've worked there for a long time already. 
- THEY GIVE YOU LESS THAN 10 HOURS PER WEEK. 
- don't even bother going inside their break room. there are no tables where you can eat, no tv, and no chairs! they only have one couch that fits 3 people and they have like more than 20 people working! and when you go inside their break room, there is a person lying down on the couch, which means no space for you to sit. 
- the pay is not worth it. a kid can do anything to you, spit on you, kick you, anything. but they only pay you that much?

This company used to be great. They cared about clients and employees and now it’s obvious they don’t. They only care about money. CEO is condescending to employees and if he finds out you disagree with his decisions he feels the need to justify why he made those decisions. This field is all about having different opinions and perspectives but he doesn’t want individualization. They release new policies and procedures at least monthly if not more often and expect everyone to do the same thing for all clients to make it easier for home office. Clinical recommendations are not listened to. Feedback is not truly taken even though they say they will because it doesn’t agree with what leadership wants to do. They never asked if anyone was comfortable to go into peoples homes before forcing this change. Scheduling is an absolute joke and it interferes with our ability to do our job effectively but it’s easier for them to do it their way even though it takes us longer and requires us to go through more steps to get stuff done. In turn this requires us to work longer hours to meet billable hour requirements and all the admin stuff. PTO is not really PTO and no matter how much PTO you use or how many days the center is closed you still have to meet your billable hours because they have to make sure they get their money! So concerned about deadlines and serving more clients that they have lost sight of making sure people are qualified and properly trained. They’ll hire just about anyone and provide them with only about 1/3 of what training used to be like. Then good luck because you’re thrown to the wolves and have to hope for the best. You have no work life balance and 45-55 hour work weeks are pretty common.

Trumpet used to be and has the potential to be a great place to work. BCBAs are awesome. They’re all very knowledgeable, supportive, and ethical. If you plan to advance in the field it’s a great place to gain experience. Unfortunately, the corporate side of things is terrible and makes it not worth staying. The corporate office which includes scheduling, HR, etc. is located in Colorado which makes communication very difficult. There’s maybe 1 or 2 schedulers for every trumpet in the country which is insane. They schedule clients at times that don’t even make any sense. There is absolutely no communication about when sessions get cancelled, changes in availability, etc. I can’t begin to explain how many times I had requested off months in advance and my clients had no idea that the session would be canceled. They didn’t even get a phone call the day of. As an RBT, I was the one that would end up communicating those changes which I didn’t feel was my role. They make you request off like a month in advance so they can “plan ahead” but don’t end up finding coverage until the last minute. For a part time job with no PTO, they expect a lot from their employees with very little incentive to want to stay and perform well. If they put time and effort into keeping current employees it would lead to more satisfaction for employees and clients overall but instead they hire anyone, provide minimal training, and then throw them to the wolves and overwhelm them and it’s a continuous cycle. It’s obvious that all they really care about is making money at this point.
