At this point in my career, the salary checkbox isn't the leading one to fill. I was looking for a company that also matched key core values of transparency, work/life balance, and mentorship -- both inward and outward. Tyson & Mendes has far exceeded expectations. Not only has the firm delivered on promises made during the interview process, I've been amazed by the consistency in leadership across different departments and the creativity in internal programs, team building and learning tracks for attorneys, specifically associates looking to advance within the firm. 

The support staff is second to none, and our team is full to the brim with talent, an A-team roster and a deep bench, the opportunity here is endless for those looking to deliver the best results to clients in the industry. In my previous role, I spent 8 years in client service to many law firms, now Tyson & Mendes' competition, and I can say no other law firm in the industry is doing what we are doing as a team with the best leadership in the business leading the charge.

This was by far the worst paralegal job I’ve ever had in my life.  I was given a mentor who didn’t like me so she never helped me. You’re basically left on your own and not given any guidance.  They work you like a slave for low wages. I never took lunches or breaks because I wanted to make sure I made the billable hours.  The number one complaint in the office from the staff is that we were overworked and underpaid. I would add to that under appreciated by most attorneys. 


The office manager is a joke and picks her favorites.  I was harassed by a male employee and all they did was move his office down the hall.  What is worse is that the office manager never even informed HR about the harassment.  I only informed HR when I felt that the office manager was trying to downplay the harassment. 

There are so many things centered around alcohol. I’ve been in recovery for two and a half years. I really don’t appreciate being forced to things like a “Champagne Toast” or “Wine and Cheese” gatherings. I don’t drink and I don’t like to be around people who do. But people are constantly drinking alcohol at the firm even during the day. 

The workplace culture is awful. No one wants to be there. People call in sick all the time. Others are looking for work elsewhere. 

If you are a talented paralegal please do not waste your time here. It sucked 6 months out of my life that I can’t get back.

This is one of the most dishonest law firms I have experienced to date. First, they misrepresent what you will doing upon working at the firm. They tell you you will be doing a lot of substantive work and managing your own cases with client contact, only for you to start working there and be micromanaged by much more junior lawyers who have zero training. There is no training for lawyers and HR is ran by an "administrative" partner who has maybe 2 years of practice. 

The firm is full of favoritism and nepotism and you can forget about getting ahead based on merit. If you want to learn and grow, do not waste your talents at this firm. This is not a sophisticated practice.  They try and cover their mediocrity by giving you pizza parties and cocktail hours. However, do not be fooled.  Almost all of the senior counsels who are competent are frustrated, and it is unlikely that they are able to retain any of them. 

The only good thing about the firm is, depending on the practice group you can work remotely.

If you feel red flags in the interview trust your gut. Turnover rate is insane… people quitting within a week. They make a lot of promises they don’t keep. Not actually hybrid or remote. Make you go in a-lot. No support staff, no leadership. Don’t ask questions, you literally get in trouble for asking a question. “You should already know the answer to”. If you’re not in the inner circle they will try and force you out. Billing requirements are insane.. you get daily/ weekly reminders for not hitting hour’s minimum a day. Need carrier approval to work on a case you’re not assigned ( which is literally all the time) then have to attach your approval to every billing entry. Every week you’ll get “recommendations” from billing team on what you need to cut from your billing. Impossible to meet billing hours. Most of your day is wasted on billing entries and non billable. Great bonus structure- that no one has ever met..

This is the sweat shop of law firms.  Severely overworked and grossly under compensated.   Constant high-stress atmosphere.  Policies and guidelines are in place but not enforced; at least, not on all (keep reading).  

Management is laughable.   The office manager, for example, is a former legal assistant promoted internally with no prior managerial experience, and it shows.   Many decisions involve favoritism and are covered up by lies and excuses when challenged.  

Culture of alcohol.  If you don’t partake, you won’t be part of the cool kids at T&M High.  You know, those who break dress code, come in late, take extra long breaks, etc.  

And here’s an idea, cut back on the ridiculous amount of expensive events and put those funds into salaries.  Perhaps your retention would be more than that of a revolving door.   

Don’t waste your time or your talents/skills here.  They don’t deserve you.

In 18 years of legal practice, I can honestly say this is the best place I have ever worked. My colleagues are exceptionally talented, but also really good people who I am proud to know. This is one of the few firms that still believes that nice matters. They encourage us to be good humans as the foundation of all that we do. We show every day that you can win while still being civil and collegial. The leadership is approachable and transparent, and lead by example. If you’re burned out and jaded and forgot the last time you loved the practice of law, come to Tyson Mendes, it will bring why you became a lawyer back to life. If you’re just starting out and want top notch training, there’s no better place to learn.

This is an insurance defense firm that apparently believes it is changing the world. It is not. It is a typical insurance defense firm but worse. At this firm, the partners cut associate billable hours before they are even viewed by the client. Hence, the partners guarantee that you never hit your monthly billable hours. Moreover, this firm is remote, but the partners often imply that they want you in office. Most important though is the amount of REQUIRED administrative work. They have bagels with bob, which is mandatory every first Tuesday of the month; you must attend California CLEs that you cannot obtain credit for in your state; and, there are occasional weekly meetings that have nothing to do with cases. The pay is below market, but the benefits are good. 

Tyson & Mendes really cares about their employees and that shows through the benefits they offer and their transparency. The company is growing very quickly which can be challenging as you have to be prepared for lots of changes but they also do a lot to maintain a very personalized relationship with their employees and it's exciting to see how much they are growing. 

While I've only been here a short time, there seems to be a lot of opportunity to advance as you can see from much of their leadership who has worked their way up and been able to advance very quickly.  

I've been working for this firm for almost 6 years now and it has only gotten better. The management has our backs when someone needs assistance and they have established a friendly culture throughout the firm. There is no feeling of hierarchy within and everyone is treated with respect, no matter what your job title says. Extremely flexible with PTO and management understands that work is important but life outside of work is important as well. Over the 6 years I've worked here, I have never been denied a PTO request or made to feel like taking time off is wrong. This is a wonderful place to work and pursue a career.
