Analyst V Supervisor – I’m responsible for Managing Data-Center Services as it relate to UCDHS.  I provide Technical and Analytical Application and System support for UCDHS.  This includes:  high-level, complex administrative analysis for all entities within the Health System during the hours of 00:00 – 08:30.  I provide Technological Leadership as required during these hours.   I train employees, customers, system administration and staff.  I provide problem determination and resolution as needed, whilst making independent decisions, exercising initiative, originality and sound judgment when applying established principles and practices to these problems and completing those tasks in an organized manner with attention to detail.
•Our Team Role:  
Support and maintained the UCDHS during the hours of 00:00 – 08:30 to help insure availability in a 24/7/365 Data-Center.   Include:  Print, Batch, System Monitoring and Escalation.  Work with Applications and System Infrastructure teams, to ensure systems integrity.  Maximized production efficiency, tracked application, monitor hardware performances and output.   Control the Production batch, resolved abends, client issues and user problems relating to batch job-stream, systems and reports.   Over 80% of the processing and reports are done on this shift.
•Continue to work with newest staff member Jeremy on attendance issues, training, team building and being a bit more proactive.  Jeremy has made a MAJOR improvement in his attendance since working on this team.  Jeremy started with -12 hours and has now accrued over 300 hours of vacation and/or PTO.  
•Team responsible for all after-hour Systems changes, including:  IPL's, upgrades hardware/software, SUTS, Bi-Weekly Maintenance, Month-end processing, Clock Change and any unexpected outages.
•In the midst of communicating, I make it a practice to keep all Supervisors, Manager and Team members abreast of issues, follow-up and resolution via turnover and/or email.  Communicate - Communicate and more Communications.
•Continue to create, update and centralize procedure for all the teams. 
•Write alerts/checkpoints to help keep team on track of processes and Service Levels.
•Provide technological leadership and support:  escalation, staff training and problem resolution.
•Assist the following groups (Systems, Production Control, DBA, Enterprise Storage and TOC), in resolving issues such as:  Reoccurring batch abends, drive errors, ATL errors, redundancy in batch, training docs, communication, resources, log errors  and addressing issues for permanent resolution.
•assist the Applications groups in problem determination and/or resolution during off-hour processing. 
• Worked with Z9 group I verifying downtime documentations while monitoring their changes of System Software for errors after their changes and making suggestions so that we can be more pro-active and prevent outages/impact to our customer base.   
•Assisted and trained with the Enterprise Storage Group on Hitachi hardware (Anthony, Kirk and Les).
•Trive on Customer focus, I have a very positive attitude, I’m flexibility, highly motivated, and I promoting teamwork among team members.   
•Attended and/or completed online IT Mandatory classes.
•Team, documented Print Applications Reports names for Epic Conversion for future parallel processing considerations.
•Volunteered for the Window7 Deployment project. Worked several weeks in several different locations.  Did several 14+ hours days (6pm – 08:30 am), to assist with project and cover my shift (00:00-08:30).  This was an excellent opportunity for cross-training.  I learned so much more about PC hardware.  

My Goals:  
•EPIC conversion.  Play a major role in the new Epic environment on DAYS.

This department is toxic. There is a lack of diversity, when I go somewhere for services I’d like to think that they’re are persons who look like me and can relate to me. You cannot trust anyone has your best interest in mind, there is no camaraderie. There is a lack of support. If management doesn’t “like” you, forget about it. You can share your concerns and or needs with management, they’re not addressed in a timely manner and you are overlooked. Communication is a huge issue. Emails go unanswered for weeks or aren’t answered at all,no matter the importance. Employee moral is low. There is no comprehensive training program. The training that’s given is by employees who don’t follow the “rules” themselves. All this being said, you’re set to fail from the start. I’ve never worked anywhere that had a probationary period and questioned whether or not I’d pass. There are no set expectations. The department needs an overhaul. Customer Service isn’t what they want you to give to the patient during registration. You are to be robotic in nature, stick to the script and move on. I was criticized by coworkers and management for building a rapport with patients while registering them. This is how I set myself apart. You’ve got to realize patients are the reason we’re able to work and they’re here because they’re I’ll, they don’t want to be here. The last thing a patient needs is to deal with registration staff treating them like numbers and not people. Then having the nerve to ask for their personal information. This is what happens when a department is focused more on numbers than providing the patient/customer with a great experience. Benefits offered are great but not worth it.

As a current employee of a large bureaucratic IT healthcare department, I would describe the overall experience as somewhat lackluster. While there are certainly some positives to working here, such as job security and a decent salary, there are also a number of frustrations that can make the job less than satisfying.

One major issue is the amount of bureaucracy and red tape that we have to deal with on a daily basis. The organizational structure is very hierarchical, which can make it difficult to get anything done efficiently. Decisions often have to go through multiple layers of approval, which can be a slow and frustrating process.

Additionally, communication within the department can be lacking. There are often silos between different teams, which can lead to misunderstandings and duplication of efforts. This can make it difficult to feel like you are part of a cohesive team working towards a common goal.

Another challenge is the pace of change within the industry. Healthcare IT is a rapidly evolving field, and it can be difficult to keep up with the latest developments and technologies. While there are opportunities for professional development, it can be challenging to find the time and resources to pursue these opportunities while still keeping up with day-to-day responsibilities.

Overall, while there are certainly worse places to work, I would say that this IT healthcare department is fairly average. It provides a stable income and some opportunities for growth, but there are also significant challenges that can make it difficult to feel fully engaged and satisfied with the work.

A typical day as a case manager involved reviewing the patient case load for imminent discharges and probable discharge  planning needs, clarifiying orders with the medical team and securing DME or arranging services to enable a safe discharge.  Collaboration with other disciplines to  plan for complex care  needs and  communication with outside vendors via Allscripts ( an electronic referral system) and or direct telephone contact to coordinate the outgoing needs of the patients. The most enjoyable part of the job was working with the families. The hardest part of the job was finding time for UR during the course of our day. It required so much time and we were often short on staffing . Getting the minimal amount of charting done to reflect that we reviewed the charts for potential discharge planning needs was difficult if not impossible let along the  large numbers of reviews we were expected to complete on a daily basis, forward to insurance companies and document for the university to see. and for financial teams and accounting to  bill.

Most days I am allowed to make my own hours as long as my tasks are completed by the end of the week however sometimes those 'tasks' are a bit vague. My PI and supervisor are easy to work with but are at times very busy in their own duties and are removed from most day to day activity. I've benefited from their training early on, but have become stagnant in learning new techniques for some time. The hardest part of the job may be due to the relative less experience I have compared to say a PhD or grad student in that it may take some more time to optimize certain experiments. This extends to designing experiments where I may not be familiar with or cognitive of certain tools or techniques. That being said I have gained a tremendous amount of knowledge and experience since first starting work in this lab for which I am grateful and excited. I thoroughly enjoy working in a group in which I can bounce ideas and work out problems, which doesn't occur as frequently as I would like. I enjoy the few people I work with and the inclusive work environment we succeed in sustaining.

I start work at 6:30am. First I stock my cart with the daily supplies (toilet paper, paper towel, soap etc.) and cleaning supplies. I go around to each patient room in my unit to pull the trash and bio hazardous waste. After that I sweep and spot mop the corridors and pull tray from the nurses station. I go to restrooms, clean and stock supplies. I then go to the patient rooms and do my daily cleaning in each room. I clean the side rooms (offices, break rooms, Dr. beds, conference rooms etc).  I pull trash in the whole unit before I clock out for the shift. Clock out at 2:30pm. This job has taught me to organize my time at work and prioritize. The management is a little unorganized and some are not really sure of the rules, but they are all nice and respectful. The hardest part of the job is balancing your time between your daily duties and what the managers are asking you to do. Sometimes there is not enough time to finish every single thing on your task list. The supervisors are very understanding when that happens. The most enjoyable part of my job is caring for patients and being able to help the nurses and doctors with whatever they may need.

Long time employees whose work ethic and culture are very similar to those who work at the DMV; including the management here. Many employees have been here for several years and some even up to 35 years and are outright scary. 

I expected a higher caliber of employee. Because this  institutional learning system is on the cutting edge of healthcare and medicine, I really anticipated so much more and was extremely disappointed. I've had multiple conversations with fairly new employees (two years or less) who, independent of each other, have all reaffirmed what I've experienced there; rude, lazy, ill mannered employees  with very little structure who are a reflection of the managers that are supposed to be holding them accountable but are so lazy they barely show up to actually work half the time. 

This is a union environment which, in the state of California, there really is no need for unions. There are so many state laws that protect employees.  Coworkers were calling in for sick leave, FMLA's, Kin Care, late  excessively and everything under the sun.

Daily tasks included: Hospital or patient accounting department functions, operations and procedures, Medical terminology, procedure and diagnosis coding sufficient to assess accuracy of patient accounts to submit to third-party insurers.
Verified all returned claims are re-edited in accordance with all billing laws, also verifying that the correct coding meets the National standards. 
Operation of online computerized patient accounting systems and/ or electronic billing systems, accounting practices and procedures common to accounts receivable. Performed general clerical office practices and procedures, meeting company productivity goals.
Data elements for UB04/ 1500 forms appropriate to third-party billing standard, hospital and patient accounting department functions, insurance policies and their benefits, data processing input devices for accounts receivable practices and procedures. Ensured management received thorough communication on project progress via verbal, email, and phone communication.

UC Davis Health is a wonderful company to work for. There are always opportunities for advancement and growth in the company, for example the program called “Bridges To Excellence” allows nurses to shadow other nurses in different units, and specialties to see if that is an area they would like to work in. Additionally, there are training programs for novice and experienced nurses who are looking to change specialty areas.  My own experience at UC Davis Health has been great, and I’ve learned so much working as an acute care nurse. There are no CNA’s on the floor, however, there are so many helpful resources including; Best Team for psychiatric emergencies; Lift Team for assistance with turning, ambulating and cleaning patients; and EKG technicians. My only personal con is that when my home unit closed, I was forced to go from day shift to night because of my lack of seniority on the new unit. It has been a hard transition but overall I feel that this is a wonderful company to work for. 

A typical day at UC Davis medical center was pretty ok. We clocked in at 6:30am Monday through Friday and went to our assigned area to clean and sanitize it. I learned very important skills about working with highly dangerous chemicals and how to work in a team environment. my co-workers were the nicest people I ever had the pleasure of working with. the truth about management was they were not very friendly when it came to how they wanted something to get done. They used force and threats of telling the workers they would be written up if they did not get to their assigned task right away. They almost always spoke in harsh tones and spoke very rudely to all the workers except for the one they liked. The most enjoyable part of working there was getting to meet and know all of the patients, families, and the wonderful medical staff. the hardest part of the job was dealing with some of the rude management.
