My typical day at work involves over 150 patients and multiple physicians. I have years of customer service and clinical experience. I am Multilingual in English,Arabic, and Spanish. I have learned the EPIC system and knowledge of third-party payers. Pre-registration for each provider, obtain vital signs, medications, past/present medical history, assist with procedures. Create referral shells, answering calls, multi-specialty clinic scheduling,insurance and authorization verification,co-pay collections,managing/monitoring petty cash drawer, Durable Power of Attorney as needed, prepping exam rooms, replenishing medical supplies, fax and scanning forms/medication refills. Management is very understanding and always willing to assist and very proactive. Assertive with medical and clerical concerns. A very multi-diverse culture at UCSD and positive atmosphere. Easy to adapt to the environment. I would not say that there is a difficult part of the job because I am always on top of my duties and go above and beyond what is exceptional. I loved seeing my patients leave everyday with a smile on their face even when they have critical diseases that enable them to interact with anyone. I do not see this position as a job but only as my passion to execute my excellent care and positive attitude for anyone I have an encounter with. Thank you for your time.

My position is security agent . There is a lot of overtime, so even if my usual hours are eight, I will end up doing a 12-hour shift. When dealing with challenging and violent patients, a typical workday can be stressful or easy. However, because you switch between posts every day, the job is never monotonous. The agents you work with determine the workplace culture; you have those who carry out and 
 value their duties. 

However, there are certain agents that consistently miss work or arrive late for their shift. Unfortunately, it's challenging to get rid of rotten apples. Dealing with challenging patients while being aware that your life could be in risk is the most stressful aspect of the job.

Overall, I enjoy working here, and God willing, this will be the place I retire from.


Your experience with this company will most definately differ depending on the department you work in. Unfortunately for me, my particular department has a well earned and well known reputation as a difficult department. I would say that the cause of this bad reputation is due to the department being severly understaffed and overworked. Managements insistance in paying well below average salaries coupled with non-replacement of individuals who have left the department has resulted in most employees in the department feeling stressed out and under appreciated.  On a positive note, UCSD does have some good benefits including health benefits, and a Christmas breakfast/lunch.

be prepared to pay a monthly parking fee (currently $81.00) if you plan on working at either the La Jolla or Hillcrest locations.

The work is great with many intelligent and nice people. The compensation package is standardly good (many options for health insurance, free dental and vision insurance). It also offers 403b or pension (but you need to work there at least 5 years to be able to use the pension). Due to the grant funding and union rule, the salary is low and it is hard to increase the salary based on the performance, especially if your position is in a union. In that case, regardless of your performance, you get the same raise as everyone else and your boss cannot do anything about it. Tip: try to negotiate for a higher salary at the beginning before accepting the offer.
Due to covid, the company allows work from home schedule, which is a plus.

UCSD La Jolla care manager department was once a harmonious and  great environment overall. Were we busy yes, but we were valued and appreciated.The care managers felt heard and seen. But since there has been a change in leadership the environment has shifted.  It has become a hostile work environment. Leadership has become overbearing and speaks in a very condescending manner to the staff. The air is always thick with tension.  The micromanaging is unbearable.

This use to be such a great department but now, everyone walks on eggshells. The morale is very low.

It's disappointing and its not changing  in the foreseeable future.

It's as independent or involved as YOU want it to be. Colleagues respect your personal life but also realize we spend the majority of our time at work - so best to make it fun!

There are two sides one side is if you are light by management, you’ll get promoted and go further in your career

If you have a good manager, you will be treated respectfully if you don’t have a good manager will treat you like dirt

Very specialized providers (including multiple neurotologists) can make referrals confusing, but you know that your patient will be in the best hands possible. I frequently cared for patients who had been seen at several other health systems prior to coming to us where we were able to make some headway in their care. I truly appreciate the opportunities I was given at UCSD Health. I was compensated well, but there was not a direct route to promotion or career growth being a PA/APP.

Advancement can be competitive, most depts favor spanish speaking individuals, most administrative positions require you to speak Spanish. Here you are (highly qualified, educated with many years of experience) and they will choose the person that speaks Spanish with no education, very little experience, rude and unreliable. 

Management can have a high level of backstabbing and dishonesty, won't hesitate to throw you under the bus just to save their own career.

Management of IT department was severely lacking in leadership skills and very political. They did not have a training component for employees.
The culture was very fast paced and results oriented but the goals were very undefined. I was brought on to manage the product we were sharing with private Healthcare agencies but was told to keep the system capabilities to myself. This position was constant stress with no relief in the foreseeable future. I refused the contract renewal.
