-If you love the idea of working as hard as you could to get what is considered the golden standard for healthcare management education, putting your time in with the lower positions, receiving the bottom of the pay scale range from HR every single time you move jobs, all the while getting all your work and the work of others done just so you aren't belittled, this is the place for you. When you start the company will tell you during New orientation training how they love to hire from within and grow people, but this will quickly turn into watching jobs be given to friends of current leaders and other very shady tactics like under the table hiring people before jobs are posted. 
-The "growth" opportunities are 2-4 hour classes that you need to take time off in some cases to attend. While i applaud the work UCH does for patients, its HR staff knows very well how to keep you down if you're not of a clinical background. If you are an aspiring leader, take the time to notice the difference in review ratings compared to the job titles, when you're a DR / PA / NP,  the sky is the limit, anything else, you better have room mates because you wont be making enough money to live in Colorado. 
- If you do end up taking a position with the company, make sure you're absolutely certain of the department you start in, because that's essentially where you will have to work your whole career, hiring managers could care less about any education, if you weren't essentially the CEO of another company before applying to the next step or literally already working in the department with the opening, you wont be getting the job most likely. You can take or leave the advice, HR has a great way of marketing to make it seem better than what it is and you'll likely sign up anyways, just trying to warn other highly educated people of where you wont be getting the best opportunities. 
- You will eventually get a good amount of Paid time off, this is also used for your holidays and sick time (which is common), but you wont be paid enough to do anything more than sit at home if you do have a ton of PTO. 
- I wish I could be more specific with my job title so you as the reader can get a better idea of that, but retaliation is quite bad in the place I work for and don't want to be suddenly fired. 
- Lastly, to give an idea of the "growth" opportunities for someone with 6 years of college education and 6 years of healthcare experience. I have applied to upwards of 20 jobs over the past year and gotten 2 call backs, no offers.

Arrive early to get organized, pull up all my applications I need in the computer which is about 5. Have the ED census for both facilities and the OR census for both facilities. Find out where all my sitter cases are which includes sitters for suicides through out both facilities. Check capacity at both facilities see if I have any patients holding in the ER's. See how many anticipated admits coming from PACU and from other procedures and projected admits via ER. 
Now it is 0700 time for report. I receive report from the Nursing House Supervisor and if there is anything that I missed before getting report then I work on that. The other part of my job is decedent affairs so when I start work I check to see if have any funeral homes that need to be called or if I need to follow up on donations or if there is a loss of pregnancy I need to follow up with histology. 
At 0800 I attend a capacity management meeting to find out how the morning will go with all the units and how we can plan on discharging and admitting patients in a timely matter. 
Through my day which is a 12hr shift I could get 80-100 calls a day it can be overwhelming at times but as long as I have my headphone and I can multitask I good to go. There is only 1 person that works in my department at a time. We downsize last July but in times of crisis the Nursing House Supervisor is there to help when can. 
I have the best co-workers we don't work together but help each other out when we need it. The hardest part of the job decedent affairs it seems that when the family member calls and they feel talking I don't want them to feel like I'm in a rush to hang up because the phones are ringing or other things are going on I want to be able to give them my full attention.
 What I enjoy about my job is when I get a patient that I have to admit and from the ER and the request is to a medical unit and after assessing the chart to make sure which medical unit the patient will go to I feel patient is not stable to go to medical unit and consult with ER physician and patient is reevaluated.  That makes me feel important and that I'm not just someone who sits at a desk.

I've worked here for three years, starting off as an entry level Medical Records Technician with an AS in Health Information Technology and the AHIMA RIT credential. The organization helped me pay for a portion of my continuing education which I did online (through WGU). This allowed me to accelerate and I completed a Bachelor's Degree in Health Information Management and earned the AHIMA RHIA credential. This took about a year and I applied for a higher-level job as a medical coder. I had this job for around 2 years, completed a Master's degree, and then applied for a role on the Revenue Cycle IT team working with the EHR. I just had my 3 year anniversary. I feel very satisfied with the opportunities I've gotten, the help towards my education, and the advancement opportunities available. I work remotely now, which I love. It's a great work-life balance for me (mid thirties with no kids, married). I've had to hustle for sure to get the education under my belt and have also applied for dozens of internal positions before getting an offer. This felt like it took forever while I was in the middle of it and waiting for an open door, but realistically three years to complete my education to a Master's level and get a job in the department I wanted is really not that long. I also feel the benefits are very competitive, the pay is pretty good (maybe not the top dollar, but it's paying my bills), the opportunities are there if you are willing to work and look for them, and I feel fairly secure in my job at this point. This company has taken great care of me through the pandemic and I kept my job with no reduction in hours. Overall I love working here and don't plan on going anywhere any time soon. 

UCHealth used to be a good place to work, but not anymore. It is the typical corporatization of healthcare, horrible bureaucracy, poor physician leadership etc
Physicians have no autonomy at all. You are constantly told to work more and see more patients. It is all about RVUs and percentiles. There is no interest in quality of care. There is no interest in keeping their best doctors happy. It is all about UCHealth's expansion. They are obsessed in becoming the most dominant healthcare organization in Colorado and that at all costs. Physicians are obligated to see a lot of new patients, when they have no availability to see their established patients. It takes months for a patient to get in to see a specialist. When you try to refer patients outside UCHealth, so that they can get better care, the leadership pulls you in meetings and you get scolded.
And did I mention that the physicians benefits are below average ?
The sad part is that all the other big healthcare corporations in CO are the same or worst. Small private practices cannot survive financially and they are swallowed by these big corporations. Signing with them gives you the illusion of job stability, but they treat you like they own you. "Take it or leave it!"
Sometimes it really feels like even the receptionists or the MAs are treated with more respect than their physicians.
Are you a physician who envisions having some level of autonomy in the way you practice? Well, then this is not the job for you. Here you do what you are told. It is all about "the production".
More recently, they started hiring lots of NPs and PAs, because they simply do not get enough MDs interested in their job positions. So my advice is to stay away from UCHealth and find yourself a job somewhere else.


My primary responsibility was to act as the Research Compliance Officer liaison between the University of Colorado and the Denver VA Medical Center. I maintained communication between the investigators at the VA and the University, many of whom held dual appointments at both institutions.  I also attended all IRB meetings where VA protocols were reviewed and acted as the expert on VA federal and local research policies and procedures to ensure all protocols met VA research regulations. The most difficult part of the job was maintaining a positive relationship between investigators at both institutions especially given the extensive federal and local policies and regulations required by the VA institution. These were sometimes difficult to reconcile with those of the University making it difficult to ensure that the VA protocols were in compliance with VA research regulations as well as those of the IRB.  This was also frustrating to VA investigators requiring extensive diplomacy and tactful communication as well as the maintenance of important relationships with investigators, VA staff and IRB staff to name a few. I was responsible for the interaction of multiple local and external VA employees  for guidance which added another critical dimension to my role.  Although challenging I learned a great deal in this position and truly enjoyed working with a variety of different and intelligent people.

It was my privilege to work with the brilliant surgeons, nurses and the surgical techs as we worked to improve and save lives.  There was never a typical day at work.  I usually started the day by checking to see if there were any added request for time (RFT) surgeries waiting to be scheduled; put together tomorrow’s schedule for the charge nurse to prepare the assignments; keeping the dry erase board, enumerating the current scheduled operations, up to date at least hourly if not more.   While answering the multi-line phone and transferring it to the correct staff member, I also ordered supplies for the operating rooms and office supplies.  It was also necessary to add the RFT surgeries when a room opened up and update monthly reports and databases.  I learned new computer programs for payroll (ANSOS), scheduling the rooms (EPIC), reporting data bases, such as SNOW and VIRTUE.  I worked well with management listening to their suggestions and implementing them with a positive attitude.  My co-workers would say that I talked directly with them if there were questions or problems with a can do attitude to be able to work with them to establish a high level of esprit de corps.  The hardest part of the job was rearranging the 19 operating rooms when we had multiple transplants and had to triage the other surgeries putting the most urgent cases first – upsetting doctor and nurses schedules.  The most enjoyable part of the job was feeling the satisfaction of helping our patients’ lives to improve.

Well..Where to start.   
The School of Medicine (SOM) is a at least a decade behind other medical groups in the city. The SOM leaders defend with great passion their perspective that the culture will remain a "provider centric culture".  Any attempts to move the culture to a more patient centric culture is greatly resisted that often results in targeting of employees and Doctors whom may be inclined toa patient centic culture.  
Many of the SOM MD's curse, rage and are abusive to staff, medical students and residents and in some cases patients.  Any attempt to correct abusive behavior from MD's, managers are treated as pariahs. There largely is ZERO accountability from the SOM....

However, there is a new Dean and one of his most glaring area's that needs attention is correcting in impression that MD's are creating a hostile work place and educational experience for the new medical students and residents.  It is clear to me that abusive behaviors left unchecked, are picked up by emerging MD's because they themselves have been in an abusive rotations.  The School as Data to support this thoughts given they have started to survey the residents and medical students...it's all there in black and white....

The New UCH leaders are openly mocked by MD leaders and many UCH middle management are left to "step and fetch" for many of these out control MD's.

Patients are left to wait to see these "specialists"...Weeks or months in waiting and are often treated poorly especially if they have Medicaid.

Pros: 
-UCH is a highly integrated CIN
-After your initial 90 days of work, they allow you to work from home up to three days a week
-They oftentimes reimburse new employees to obtain Epic-certification, provided they sign a one-year contract with the company

Cons: 
-The salary is not competitive and opportunities for advancement  are limited. 
-High employee turnover rate 
-They usually low-ball your initial salary and often-times do not offer relocation assistance.    
-New employees are only given a TOTAL of TWO weeks PTO in their first year -- meaning they do NOT offer paid sick leave, paid holidays nor maternity/paternity leave. 
-Teams are typically spread out among different locations, so you very rarely have face-to-face meetings, leading communication to only be possible via email or Skype.
-It is very disappointing to see that despite the tech integration/ advancement the company has to offer, UCH is inherently non-progressive and the culture is pretty much by-the-book and comprised of red tape

A typical day includes caring for five to six patients with a variety of health problems, including ortho-knee hip and shoulder, gastrointestinal issues, respiratory ailments, and telemetry monitored patients.
  I learned to implement post operative orthopedic cares according to comprehensive protocols established by the physicians and the hospital. I also brought my medical/surgical/cardiac skills back up to snuff following a three year stint as a psychiatric nurse. 
  To my good fortune I had the opportunity to work with an excellent unit manager, who demonstrated caring and was able to achieve high levels of nursing excellence because of the positive work culture she created; and because of her excellent planning and coordination. She left five months ago.
  My coworkers are helpful and encouraging. Most of them work hard to provide safe and clinically excellent care. There is a great deal of collaboration and team work.
  The hardest part of my job is finding supplies in a timely fashion. There are many supply locations over a large area.
  I enjoy watching patients return to wellness. I also feel that I have accomplished something when I know that a patients course of care was optimized by proactive nursing interventions that anticipated needs and avoided or corrected complications promptly. I also have had the pleasure to precept nurses who are new to nursing or to the system.

Started here for a travel assignment, mostly because I've heard raving reviews about the hospital's culture and how great it is to work here. I feel UCH is an excellent place to work, and if you're relocating to Denver/Aurora, I would recommend trying the hospital's traveler program out-- it is an excellent way to "try before you buy," and they have an extremely high retention rate on their travelers. The majority of the nursing staff are new graduates however, which comes with its own pros and cons-- advancement is really easy here with little experience (many of the charge nurses even have less than 2 years of experience), but some situations are obviously handled by nurses that may not have the experience to not "freak out," as you might say. Be VERY adherent to policy and procedure, as any deviation, regardless of your reasoning, is considered a violation, and they are very happy to file incident reports here for the smallest, most insignificant reasons (I've never had an incident report in my 6-year nursing career until I started here). Also, anyone new to the hospital working the floors or units has to do rotating shifts monthly (days/nights), including travelers, unless you can arrange an all-nights schedule.
