I worked here for about a year and a half, and during that time we had about 4-5 employees come and go from our department. When I first started we did not have a supervisor on board, but when we finally did get one it was the start of a tornado. The hospital itself offers great benefits to employees, the ED nurses are amazing to work with, and everyday was a new experience for me. One complaint I do have about the foundation itself is it lack of commitment to protect ALL of its employees. I worked in ED registration which meant having to go into possible covid positive rooms. We had been asking for months to be fitted for N95’s and we were always always always givin the run around. What a surprise, just two weeks ago we finally got fitted for N95’s. Covid precautions started when, January? HORRIBLE. Let me just tell you, this is not the place to work at if you plan to speak up for being mistreated. When this new supervisor came in, she would force us to clock out early. Her reason was there was nothing going on, so clock out before your 8th hour. And I’m talking like 4-7 minutes before our 8th hour! I went to the union about this, and they made sure to put a stop to it immediately. When it comes to favorites, the ED registration department sure shows for it. With social distancing there are not supposed to be staff members gathered in the work room together, but you’ll notice supervisors will let their fav’s lounge back there together, sometimes without a mask. I had an encounter with a patient which led to this patient reporting a false accusation against me that involved theft. HR Ms. Zapata got involved with management who also reached out to UCI PD, it was a huge deal. Which I understood and took into consideration, but through out a whole close to 2 month investigation, turns out the cameras I consistently asked for HR & PD to review for evidence WERENT EVEN WORKING! I was 100% confident it did not happen and my job was safe and I returned almost a month later. HR does not protect its employees as they should. At UCI you are guilty until proven innocent, and even under a false allegations you will be on a bad list with management. The point of my review is, if you are human and make mistakes do not work here. If you plan to stand up for yourself for being treated poorly by your supervisor, don’t work here. There was employee who had been there 6+ years and never received not one single disciplinary action until this new supervisor came in. She openly looked at one of our senior employees like she was the most disgusting human being on the planet. Snacking and food was prohibited in our registration room, but walking in you’ll see the supervisor eating stringed cheese and other snacks. I guess you live the good life here when your best friends with the manager. It saddens me I will be not be seeing some co workers anymore, but you can’t put a price on a peace of mind. Good luck to anyone working here and future employees! This review is specifically for the ED Registration Department by the way. 

When I worked there the workforce was filled with several members of one family. One manager was married to a nurse she was supervising. Two of the managers were cousins. One of the managers supervised her sister. Another manager lived with his girlfriend who was also a nurse there. Nepotism is the mildest term you could use to describe it.You could hardly call them managers because they literally were never on the units. After reporting patient abuse and the nepotism to the whistleblower hotline ( corporate compliance office  )and the ombudsman, I was targeted more severely by the management and the human resource consultant who styled himself after Roy Cohen and Lord Voldemort from Harry Potter.  The anonymity they promise you is a complete lie. The whistleblower system is like a spider’s web you fall into. They even mocked me when I told them I was being retaliated against. After several  specious write-ups and a soviet style “Show-Trial” I was fired. But not before turning in a report to the department of public health. The children’s psychiatry unit was admitting adults and had been for at least ten years in order to boost the census. They told the staff that there was a special waiver that allowed them to do this. No one was allowed to see this mysterious document. Not a single staff member, social worker or medical student ever questioned the practice which is obviously illegal. I made a public records request and discovered that the supposed waiver was in fact a forgery. There was no such thing as a waiver. I have the documents and I love showing them to people who cannot believe what they’re looking at. The DPH made them stop this practice. It was still too late for me. The state laughed away my report of retaliation. The state is actually in collusion with the UC system, which is notorious for corruption. The only upside is that all of these managers were fired. I’ve never seen such dastardly individuals and such incompetence in my life outside of movies about Victorian madhouses. The current Whitehouse gives you a window into how I was treated as a whistleblower and protector of patients. If you are competent and do what is right, you will be destroyed. It was a mind-boggling and soul crushing experience.

The typical day at work, which I also saw as the most challenging, was our "OR" days.  We would utilize general anesthesia in order to treat children who were born with large birthmarks.  It was very fast paced, but the staff always worked very well together.  My co-workers were great and I really enjoyed working these days especially with them as my team.  I learned a lot as a manager and I wore a lot of different hats in that position, so it was stressful, but I enjoyed every minute of it.  It was challenging and one day was never the same as the next.   Since I was the manager of this site I was not under direct supervision and sometimes only saw my manager once a month.  In the beginning, since I was new to management, I found this difficult.  As time went on, though, I was self sufficient and it didn't affect me.  The hardest part of the job I would have to say was when any disciplinary action had to be taken.  I considered myself as one of the staff so I always found this to be difficult.  The most enjoyable part of the job was the families and the patients.  We specialized in removal of birthmarks and the treatment protocol requires them to come in for treatment every two to three months so you become particularly close to the families and are able to be there on a consistent basis to support them through a difficult time.

What is the best part of working at the company?
I worked as a contract nurse for 6 months. I was able to learn new skills and procedures. I was also able to perfect the skills I already had. I worked with lots of great people and met very interesting patients that can make you laugh or cry. You learn to become more understanding and gain a better understanding in working with a diverse group. I enjoyed working there but felt I learned enough and wanted to utilize my other nursing skills in other departments. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The clinic was too small for the amount of doctors and employees present. At times it was difficult to find a work station to sit and chart yet be close enough to help care for patients. Most times due to the lack of rooms and the acuity of care that patients needed during a doctor’s visit, patients would have to wait over an hour to be seen. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
It’s an ambulatory urology clinic to that shares the same lobby and reception area. Most times it would be very crowded and the front office staff were occasionally treated poorly by impatient patients. The patients couldn’t understand that it was not the front desks fault for delays to be seen by doctors.  

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Very hectic and stressful. Other days were slow.

It's an ok place to work stability-wise. They offer decent benefits ( you pay a portion) and their 401K has a good rate of return.

The hourly rate for administrative professionals is too low to afford a 2 bedroom apartment in a safe part of Orange County. You are required to join/pay a union and you must pay a minimum of $40 a month to park about a mile away and take a shuttle bus to and from your building. Because of this, it's practically impossible to go anywhere for lunch, leave for a doctors appt, or run errands on your lunch break.  

All departments run independently and have different processes. 
Excessive meeting culture.
 
If you are a temporary employee with the onsite temporary dept, they have a policy that limits how long you can work in one position. To get around it, they will reclassify you at a lower pay rate to keep you in the same position. So they will REDUCE your pay. I saw this happen 3 times.  How underhanded is that! It hurts office moral when workers don't feel valued. Executives do nothing to address this.

The general administrative environment of UCI Medical Ctr is old school, stuffy, quiet, dull and unchallenging.

I work on an orthopaedics floor at UCI Medical Center. Since the first day I was oriented, I was immediately welcomed into the family. My co-workers showed me what it took to be the best at my job. A typical night of work involves vital signs every four hours, baths, linen changes, helping patients to the restroom, bringing the patients water and food as ordered, and being a listening ear to the patients as they return from surgery or prepare for surgery. I have learned that patients notice the little things that you do and appreciate those above anything else. My manager from my interview till the day I finished orientation she was checking in on me and making sure that I was comfortable with my job and the responsibilities involved. The hardest part of my job would be juggling eight patients when more than one needed to go to the bathroom at the same time. The most enjoyable part of the job is working with some amazing people and meeting patients who have such great stories.

Overall, the organization lacks cohesion and communication within departments resulting in institutional changes that take forever. Policies and procedures are reactionary (towards JCAHO, HIPPA, and other accrediting bodies) rather than internally and institutionally developed. Methodologies here are unorthodox (as in different from other surrounding hospitals and practices), but the end result is usually on par.

A typical work day is like another other organization, for what you invest you shall get back in return.
What I've learned is that it's easier to be punished for your mistakes than rewarded for going above and beyond.
Management has been undergoing changes, verdict is yet to be determine, but management actions are leaning towards positive.
Co-workers are as good as they come by.
Hardest part of the job is taking aside an extra 15-20 minutes to allocate time to park and get shuttled into work.
The most enjoyable part of the job is the camaraderie amongst smaller units.

Management is the reason i Ieft. It's a level one truama center which means you are getting addons like crazy. There isn't a shortage of work here that's for sure. If you like getting low pay to work fast then your in luck. Employees moral is very low here. They get blamed on a daily! Management is a dictator. If you see her run. Alot of talking down to people not good. As a full time employee you  will pay for Parking 40$, union20$, and no discount at cafeteria :)........you park a mile away and take a 10min shuttle ride to the hospital so plan accordingly. I wouldn't work here ever. There's a very high turn around people constantly leave So manager has no choice but to hire new grads with no experience for.low pay. It never ends here..it's non stop. Expect attitude and many awkward moments.

I was placed at UCI's partial hospitalization program for my Social Work graduate internship and it was by far one of the best internships I've ever had! The staff are all very warm, approachable, and knowledgeable. They definitely promote a work culture of inclusiveness and unconditional care and support toward their interns. During my time there, I received hands on training on assessment, diagnosis formulation, treatment planning, evaluation, and group psychotherapy. Furthermore, I got the opportunity to shadow other departments to gain a better understanding of the different types of interventions and assessment that are used for inpatient vs. outpatient services. Overall, the staff really strive to expand your clinical knowledge by challenging you in your day to day work. 

Currently been here at UCI in Orange for few years now. It is a great place to work. Most everyone is nice, and it is a great place to learn if you are new to the field. The pay is just ok and could be better, however, the benefits are the best in the industry offering excellent medical benefits, as well as pension retirement benefits after completion of 5 years of service.  The management team on all shifts are very reasonable to work with. There is not much turnover with staff. It is a very busy place, however, everyone works together to get the job done and if you need help, everyone is very helpful and friendly.
