During a typical work day an employee is juggling out-patients, in-patients, and pediatric patients from our neo natal intensive care unit. The typical work day is always extremely busy with patients and add ons, that one does not get time to even get a lunch break. This aspect, in my eyes, I enjoyed. I work very well in high intensity situations and work very well under pressure. With this job I enjoyed see new patients everyday and interacting with surrounding departments that have always treated me with kindness. During my short employment here, I had the unique opportunity of taking on more pediatric patients in which I thoroughly enjoyed. This was by far my most enjoyable part of my career along with juggling between procedures. I like learning new aspects of my field and this occupation allowed me to do so. The only undesirable aspect that of my employment here is that our particular department was extremely understaffed. This created tension between coworkers and led to all the employees becoming over worked and frustrated. Despite our efforts to portray this issue to other management, the issue was not resolved. This unfortunately led to employees leaving the company which included myself. This is unfortunate for our patients and community because they have one of the best cardiac, radiology and surgical programs around. In my opinion, they just need to give better benefits to their current employees and make sure they have the help they deserve.

On a daily basis I round on stroke patients to ensure all quality measures are being met in order to provide the best outcomes for the patient.  I meet with the patient and their family to provide stroke education.  In this position I have learned about core measures, clinical practice guidelines, and Disease Specific Standards set by the Joint Commission in order to be a Primary Stroke Center and maintain certification.  Recently our hospital was purchased with several management changes and restructuring it is hard to comment on this at this point.  Most people struggle with change, although change is not always a bad thing.  Healthcare is a business like no other and it may be essential for all the changes to be occurring.  I have a very outgoing personality and I get along with everyone and like to have fun.  Working with several personalities can be a challenge and I prefer not to engage with those that are negative.  The hardest part of my job is being a go getter and getting things done and accomplished and some of the processes in place that delay the end result.  Patients and families are the most enjoyable part of my job.  I like outcomes and when I know that I have made a difference in someone's life, there is no greater reward.

It takes too long to fill vacant positions.  Therefore, permanent full time employees are required to work overtime to compensate for the lack of full staffing.  Rarely do you get two days off in a schedule together.  Because of assigning additional shifts to cover vacant positions, a regularly scheduled weekend off may become a single day off because of lack of staff and assigned shifts.

The departments are not paid the national average for a trauma II hospital.  Employees could work at surrounding hospitals and make more money.  They could also work at local box stores and make more money with similar benefits.  As a reference hospital to the entire Upper Peninsula, it would be expected to be paid accordingly.  However, our recent raise came shortly after a decrease in our matching 401K contributions.  Effectively negating the raise we received.  

Many employees have families and homes and have committed their lives to this community.  They feel underappreciated for the job that they are committed to and would like to be compensated accordingly for it.

This hospital ruined my view of healthcare. I decided to get a job within the facility to brighten up my med school application. After a year and a half in this facility, needless to say, I’m going back to school to get as far away from for profit healthcare as I can. Management is a mess, between them picking favorites, and unfair scheduling it not worth your time. Management borderline harasses you to take lunches yet does not provide enough staff to safely and timely make this happen. Covid restriction were followed only if there was enough staff. Always low staffed on other floors so floating is pretty common. Their wages they pay ancillary staff are borderline criminal. Expecting people to have bcls and the responsibility of having peoples lives in your hands, and yet UPHS is paying them less than minimum wage when insurance and benefits are factored in... Doctors within the hospital treat staff like garbage, with no backing from management or HR. 0/5 if I could.

I worked at UP Health Systems Marquette for several years. I thoroughly enjoyed working with the cardiologists and other departmental staff. However, the manager of the department did not know the particular job that I was completing. There was a constant lack of communication in the department because of this. She was not certified in my modality, and thus, did not understand the importance of some departmental issues. There is also the issue of on-call. No staff get the most on-call hours and senior staff does not get any. Several members of my department were only there for the paycheck which made it difficult. They were completing only three exams a day while others were completing 10-15. It was very frustrating and the issues in the department never got addressed. 

I worked at UPHS Marquette for three years and absolutely loved what I did. I was born to be a caregiver. My co-workers were so helpful and nice and always took the time to help if you ever had any questions or were unsure if you were doing something the correct way.We were literally a family. We worked so well together as a team, and even under the most pressure/stress, we handled it as a team and we handled it so well. This hospital is understaffed, which I'm sure most are. Employees would get mandated, but it wasn't an every day thing. Only when we were in crucial need.

The benefits were great! They offer vision, dental, and health along with Vitality Points to help you stay active and earn prizes.

My only complaint is how short staffed we were and the salary wasn't what it should be. We should have been getting paid a lot more than we were for the work we were doing.

Overall the work experience gained here was good as a new nurse, I was able to get the bulk of what being a floor nurse is all about.  I would recommend a position here for new or experienced nurses with thick skin. The typical day at work is unpredictable as many nursing positions are, however, very low budget facility, it was a decade behind technologically from where the clinical site I attended was.  Very few simple days, the floor turnover for pts is fast pace.  Sometimes you can turn over an entire team of 4-5 pts in a shift. 
Overall if you make a year on the floor I worked on a, you could work most anyplace as a nurse.

It is a toxic work environment. A lot of back stabbers. Shoddy work equipment. Poor conditions. All time off is accrued as PTO hours and must be used for, sick days, vacation days, doctors appts, etc. There is definitely a higherarchy and anyone that isn't medical is looked down upon and considered disposable. There is a severe amount of understaffing in all departments. Reception deals daily with angry patients due to constantly having to reschedule their appointments, meds not being called in a timely manner and test results not being received in a reasonable time. Any  patient complaint is blamed on poor reception services. There is no willingness to try and improve working conditions. 

The work environment is toxic. It can all be traced back to the Head of the Clinic System. It is rare for any new hires to stay for more than a year.  None of my coworkers are happy. No one feels secure in their job. Mistakes are tracked, but not discussed with you. There is no ability to learn from mistakes or even correct them. Jobs at this facility used to be sought. Now it is one that people avoid. Understaffing is a constant issue due to no-one wanting to work there. They can't even keep enough providers at UPHS Bell Clinic. I would not recommend that anyone works there at UPHS Bell Clinic. I am actively seeking another job.

Lifepoint values profits over everything else and that you work irrespective of anything else when their unreasonable deadlines are given. You will be paid relatively well, but don’t count on your personal life amounting to much as upper management does not care about any work life balance. If they need something, you are expected to drop your personal life. The job didn’t start out bad but as of 2023, the new cfo and lifepoint corporation are looking to slash out as much cost as possible. Steer clear of this place and save your sanity, there’s a reason you locally hear a lot of negative things, their mostly all true on some level and being downplayed with employee turnover.
