What I Learned
One of the biggest takeaways is that flexibility and problem-solving are key. No two projects go exactly as planned, so adapting to changes—whether due to weather, material shortages, or workforce availability—is essential. Effective communication is another critical skill, as projects require seamless coordination between various teams.

Management
Good management in construction engineering balances technical knowledge with leadership skills. A strong manager ensures that projects stay on schedule and within budget while keeping the team motivated. Poor management, on the other hand, can lead to delays, cost overruns, and unhappy employees.

The Hardest Part of the Job
Managing unexpected challenges is one of the toughest aspects. Weather delays, supply chain issues, and last-minute design changes can create pressure. Ensuring all teams stay aligned despite these challenges requires patience, adaptability, and strong leadership.

The Most Enjoyable Part of the Job
Seeing a project come to life is incredibly rewarding. Watching a structure go from blueprint to completion gives a sense of accomplishment. Additionally, working with a diverse team and solving complex problems keeps the job engaging and fulfilling.

Report on time in scheduled area and receive report from RT. Plan strategy for patient work list starting with sickest patient and meeting with the physician to discuss treatment plan. Document plan and collaborate with RN, PT, and OT. Complete and document all patient assessments in a timely manner. Initiate SBT's, Cpap trials, and trach collar trials for weaning purposes as the patient tolerates. As new patient's are admitted who are mechanically ventilated  the Respiratory Therapist's determines which mode of ventilation is most appropriate based on the patient's medical situation. While continuing to monitor and assess our patient's throughout the shift the RT also provides airway care and management. There's usually two RT's to a unit and we work in a team environment. Throughout the shift we look at lab results, x-rays, CT's, and MRI's, etc. I enjoy my co workers. They are team players, fun and intelligent. I have learned a lot of autonomy, better communication skills, and time management. The hardest part of the job is stress. Learning to manage the stress in a healthy way. The most enjoyable part of my job would be the patient's and their families. When you see a patient whose been in ICU for six months or longer, you get to know them and their families. You see first hand what this individual has been through. Then, when they are ready to go to rehab, it's just amazing to see them going home and  having some quality of life. It's worth it. This is what it's all about folks. Saving lives! Life is so short.

A typical day at work for me consists of registering and scheduling any where from 60-120 patients a day. I love it when the clinic is busy and people continue to come to the front desk. It makes the day go by much faster. I always try to crack jokes with the patients to make both of our days a little brighter, they usually appreciate the laugh. I've learned that everyone has a story, the way they're treating me isn't because I actually did something wrong, but because of something they've experienced before they came to me. I try to show compassion and let the patients know I truly care about their well being and that usually lightens the mood. 
My boss and my coworkers are the greatest. I work with a diverse group and I love it. We have learned to play on each others strengths and weaknesses ans we always try to help one another out.
The hardest part of the job is keeping thick skin when patients get upset. Our patients can wait in our clinic for up to 4 hours and I know it takes a toll on them. I hate that they have to wait, but I can't fix it. When patients take their frustrations out on me because I'm the closest person to them, it's really hard to not take offense or snap back but I know I can't.
The most enjoyable part of the job is getting the know the patients, my coworkers, and the fun to be had with both parties. I love building relationships with our patients so they have something to look forward to when they come back to our clinic and it's not just another doctors appointment for them to dread.

What is the best part of working at the company?
the pay is above average in my area. I have been in the same position for over 16 years and the first 10 years were fantastic. Over the past 6 years there has been a decline and I believe it is due to poor management choices. They have an agenda and do not treat/respect  you as an individual person but a commodity. It is so unfortunate because I actually love the work and the population that I care for. I will be leaving within 2 months because of the toxic environment that was created. I have only worked in one area of this facility. That being said I cannot attest for the conditions elsewhere at UVA. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
New management has decided to micromanage everything about the unit. Having been a nurse for many years, I have not been under the authority of someone like this. She is set out to prove something for herself , therefore thinks change is how it needs to be done. Change is great but she is a bulldog and I believe she wants to push everyone out and start over. She does not give a hoot about individuals, work/life balance ect.. UVA is a Magnet facility. If you want to have a magnet facility and expect your employees  to treat patients with excellence, you should treat those employees with excellence.

I received the chance to work with many people from all over the world, but there were no advancement opportunities unless someone retired, and I was unable to utilize the Bachelors of Science degree. At the beginning of the week I would change all the cages of the mice and rats held in the vivarium. Daily I would perform a health check on all animals in my care, and reported any problems to the vet technicians on duty. Once cages were changed, they were dumped, cleaned in a washer, filled with bedding, and bagged and autoclaved. These were then to be used the following week when cages were changed again. This job was sometimes monotonous, but was very easy for complete each duty. However, my college degree was not needed for this position, a simple high school diploma would do for anyone. My coworkers were cultured and experienced, and where I learned most of the daily duties. Unfortunately, however, my supervisor and assistant supervisor were not as highly rated for me. They rarely helped out, nor did their own work, and made excuses for coming to work late, leaving early, or not coming at all, leaving me and my coworkers with fulfilling their responsibilities.

The most enjoyable part of my job was working with the Doctors.  They were very kind and incredibly grateful for all the hard work that I did for them.  I loved all of the things that I learned throughout the years working in the medical field.  Working with the patients was also extremely rewarding.  Knowing that you are helping to improve their quality of life, and in some cases saving it, is priceless.  I also made lifelong friends in all of the departments in the hospital.  From the maintenance workers to the caterers.  We truly are a team in a big organization like UVA.  Therefore, it’s important to appreciate the talents that we all bring to the table.  Everyone plays a vital role in making an organization work properly.  The most difficult part of the job is how often the staff changes.  People are there for their contracted periods and then, they are gone.  Just as soon as you get familiar with people, an entirely new group comes in and replaces them.  It’s very difficult when you are dealing with leadership changing constantly.  Because with each new department head comes an entire department change.  That causes such disruption and then more staff leave.  The lack of consistency causes undue stress and conflict.

High turn over, talked down to by management. On the front lines of Covid with no support and disrespected by management who sat home on laptop computers. Want you to do more for same pay. Sadly great physicians but staff and management are sub par. UVA Health/UPG is part of UVA but they are separate and much of the policies for UVA are sadly never followed or they are translated to other versions. Would never have accepted employment had I known this. Management are not required to complete a bachelor's degree which leads to untrained, favoritism, and nepotism. If you love being undervalued and working with hostile management this is the place for you. Lots of double standards. Reprimand for going to human resources and mistreated for reporting to Human Resources. Anyone with education and prior experience use UPG/UVA Health to get your education, money and run from this sub par practice! Needs lots of help and unfortunately has declined post Covid

I can summarize my work experience in a few sentences.  I worked at UVA for 23 years with distinguished service. My patient's loved me.   It took less than 3 weeks for them to fire me.  For violating a HIPPA policy.  You are a shining star in academic nursing as long as you look good for the organization.  Today, it is not about taking care of patients well, it is about looking good for the face of the company.  At UVA I was the best asset when they could use me working 60+ hours a week. And paying me no overtime.  I made a mistake and there simply was no discussion to reconcile. never harmed a patient.  I just didn't look good any longer for risk management.  So you get axed.  that is the culture there as a nurse.  Don't look good, spit you out. 
Doctors can perform poorly, but they bring in the money and stay hired.  Nurses make a mistake (one that gets paid what they think is well) and you get fired for them to hire another nurse making 25% LESS. that is the culture there now.  I loved UVA for 22 years.  Sadly, management and culture there is now so cutthroat and filled with fatty meat, it is impossible to trim. If you must, look here, otherwise spare yourself the toxicity.

To have better confidence and joy within myself and to be a better Steril Proc Tech.
Management-
Maybe some more observation on selecting certain people for leadership roles. My manager was very sweet and understanding.  But educators were very lacking in educating specific day to day roles and maybe there is a possible need to hire a travelor for the role if not able to find other people to fully replace them. I want to be clear. When I was in trouble, management was very supportive.  I'll always appreciate that. But this is my respectful 2 cents. 
Workplace culture-
Motivating, but with a spice of drama.
Hardest part of the job-
Payroll errors and payroll communication (constantly having to fix and reminding payroll team to fix them).
Most enjoyable part of the job-
I've learned so much and it was because of the amazing shift I had. My team and I were always determined,  helpful, and the most hard working group of people I've ever worked with. Truly cried when I left them.

Medical center middle management is generally under-educated and ill-equipped to perform job duties. Both middle and executive leadership roles are frequently filled by BSN’s with no business or public health training...

If you are paid hourly, expect to be treated like a child. Expect to be threatened with termination if you have been greater than 59 seconds late more than five times in a year. Expect for your middle management rep to admit you’re underpaid for your work duties and do nothing to remedy it. Expect to be paid under market wages and expect to pay monthly to park far enough away that a shuttle/public bus ride to work is necessary. Expect to shuttle by their latest multi-million dollar construction project on the way and expect to not be paid enough to afford to live in Charlottesville. If you aren’t in a clinical role, expect to be treated especially like dirt. If you are in a clinical role, management may be more apt to listen to your opinions but will ultimately still ignore you.
