I will be forever grateful for the invaluable experience I've gained working here. Shortly after being hired full-time night shift, I began to realize a complete lack of respect for new employees by many of my fellow RT's. There was also a total disconnect between day shift and night shift; each one constantly blaming the other for not completing tasks and/or leaving the other shift with leftover work. I was shocked at the complete lack of understanding, compromise or teamwork. 
As the census went up, our RT night shift staff rapidly diminished...many of my former coworkers left to try and find a more peaceful work environment elsewhere, and literally all of them stated how unappreciated they felt by the doctors, nurses, other RT staff members and our own RT leadership.  
Sadly, despite night shift begging for our supervisor to hire more people, management has made no effort to remedy our ongoing, worsening, severe understaffing issue on night shift. There have been so many nights where we should have had 7, 8, or 9 RT's based on the patient count; however, we usually have 5 or 6 RT's, and if we're really lucky, we may have 7. This creates a sense of panic and stress that I wouldn't wish on anyone. There have been so many nights that I have gone without eating or even taking a bathroom break. Everyone feels overworked, overwhelmed, hopeless, and genuinely angry at how no one seems to care that we are barely able to make it through a shift.   
Many of my RT coworkers are hostile and rude.They are petty and childish. They love to gossip and say hurtful, disrespectful things behind our fellow RT's backs. Many of the laziest and most childish RT's are actually in "shift lead" positions. If they don't like you (on a personal level...nothing to do with your job performance) they will try and get you in trouble.
I am hoping the RT department will correct some of these major problems in the very near future for when other RT's get hired on there. This hospital has the potential to be an amazing place to be an RT. I just hate that I am not able to endure these issues any longer and I am forced to have to look elsewhere for my own conscience: I don't feel right in my heart and soul because I am not able to provide my patients with the care they deserve...all because I am forced to rush through my assignments due to not having enough help.

My typical days at work were always extremely chaotic. I rarely sat because I was truly committed to giving my patients and their families the best of care, in addition to performing my duties as a quality Nurse and Staff Member. This was my passion. In my profession, I gained excellent knowledge and skill as I deepened my care and expertise for patients with varying illnesses and conditions. My Nursing skills and judgement enhanced and with each experience I treasured the new things I learned. Management was management; There may have been a few who valued all, not just some of their staff. I had some very interesting experiences with co-workers, guess I was just too nice. You live and you learn. However, I did encounter people who truly were genuine. They were the silver linings. The hardest part of my job was saying no to the various needs that would hit all at once. I had constant encounters where I was forced to do many things others had the option to neglect, lest the needs of the patients would not be met. I hated to make people wait unnecessarily just so I could get by with only doing the minimal; after all how would I feel if someone treated my Mother and other Loved Ones this way. I had no choice but to do many things alone, so I was often overwhelmed and overworked. Much to my dismay, I later injured myself as a result. The most enjoyable part of the job was working in a quality hospital, that was constantly updating and improving and I really miss it. I miss the patients and those with whom I developed a good relationship. I was in the ER last week with my Grandmother who had injured herself and it touched my heart to be told by one of the Physicians with whom I previously worked how missed I was. Unfortunately I can no longer do that type of work without further jeopardizing myself. Interacting and working with many unique individuals and how they chose to conduct themselves has been quite a learning and often difficult experience for me; while everyone may do the same thing in a different way, I know that I maintained to do my best,

A typical day is full of non stop patients with little to no regard of workers mental/physical health or outside lives and responsibilities. The culture is vindictive, racist, and less than opportunistic unless very well connected. In those cases; that were very prevalent, a person with little to no experience can easily surpass a person who has been employed longer. Whether the employee displayed a more than superior understanding of their job, and enhanced job office quality they were only rewarded with more work. The job itself is even more overbearing for those that are held in high regard among their peers. Management consistently displayed a lack of knowledge pertaining to their own jobs, as well as the their subordinates. Yet, they heavily relied on staff to maintain daily functionality at the highest of standards, and were never available in critical situations. The management shows favoritism and allegiance to those that align themselves to disrupt teamwork. They also will do anything to keep people from growing with the company if a person shows considerable knowledge, and are not easily intimidated. Those kinds of workers are deemed as threats. They will sabotage their best workers just to maintain their own reputation; despite doing little to no work to better the organization. Workers are severely micromanaged and although smiling faces are encountered most workers find themselves drained at the mere sight of the massive facility. Keeping up with the rules and constant demands of the organization prove difficult because these standards are not upheld across the board. The only enjoyable take away from this haphazard entity is that the underpaid staff ,and those who are never acknowledged keep each other motivated; while those who should carry the torch smother the flames reaping benefits they have neither deserve nor earned.

I was a new BSN graduate hired on at UAB to work in a fast-paced surgery environment. I worked both days and nights full-time.

Pros: Was well-trained for position and NM/ANM help was readily available should I need it regarding daily tasks/competencies. Company offers good benefits and insurance options as well as degree advancement and tuition reimbursement. Encouragement to attend continuing education events and conferences with some financial coverage. Coverage for certification exam fees. Pay is average and there are incentives to pick up on other units and nice shift differential. Professional nurse development program in place to increase pay and improve skills. Unit culture was diverse and appreciated and had nurses of all genders, ages, races, and backgrounds. Good variety of patient cases with complex,mixed acuity. Great for learning and teaching.

Cons: Understaffing issues, especially on night shift, taking 5-6 patients a night with high acuity (freshly post-op). Management sometimes pushes aside individual employee needs to fit budget/financial concerns (refusal to hire more nurses, buy needed equipment, etc.). Management blocking employees from transferring to other units/leaving hospital due to understaffing. Scheduling coordinator for unit sub-par with little flexibility, especially for weekend shifts. Surgeons and NPs on unit difficult to work with, no interprofessional cohesion.

Biases: New nurse. Experienced difficulty finding a therapeutic work-life balance.

Bottom Line: If you are going to work in surgery, it's overall a good team of RNs, but management/MDs/NPs miscommunications and interactions will make you want to pull your hair out. You can only bust it for so long with little to no responsiveness/proactivity before considering going elsewhere.

I worked for Southview for a year and 3 months. At first it was the ideal place to work for, of course due to everything the management leads you to think they care about. My co-workers were wonderful, all of them but after the first few months, I saw Southview and it’s MANAGEMENT for who they really were. They could care less about the work load they throw on their employees, they’re so “by the book” that they fail to realize how negatively that can impact their employees as well as them. Due to them being this way, I was basically FORCED to either quit my job 1 week earlier than my 2 week notice or pass on having an very important health, life or death issue taken care of. Their precious “HANDBOOK” that they go by on OCCASSION stated that they could’ve worked with me as I was doing my all to work with them but since they’re so senseless, that didn’t matter. Guess because I wasn’t apart the of “Favorites of Southview Comittee” or “Kiss Up to My Manager Group” I couldn’t “get my way” like they do. Crazy huh? 
  There isn’t an open door policy at Southview Medical Group, although they may lead on you on to believe there is. You speak up, you basically risk losing your job. Sad, right. The amount of appreciation they show their employees is a good 1 on a scale from 1-10. Their request off time frame is ridiculous. I think they believe their already overworked employees w/wo children can predict their futures as well, not sure. I guess it’ll take the turnover rate reaching its maximum for them to see that it’s not the employees but the management that makes working there a complete NIGHTMARE.... I could on, on, but from the reading of some of the other reviews, that should paint a big enough picture for anyone.

A typical day includes clocking in, collecting my pager, receiving a job/duty to accomplish, then picking up patients by required means for 8 hours of the day.

I have learned how to interact with all types of people on the level that they need assistance. Also, I have learned that it is ok to ask others for help when you are unsure of the proper procedures. It has helped me revert back to rules and regulations of the hospital.

Management always has its ups and downs. You cannot please everyone no matter how hard you try. It has it's good and bad moments; however, management does the best they can.

I get along with ALL of my co-workers. It is a good work environment mostly because we, to the best of our ability, work together to get the job accomplished in a timely manner unless prohibited in any way.

The hardest part of the job would be dealing with different minded people. In a hospital setting not everyone is happy or in a pleasant mood; but, as a challenge, I have learned how to, generally, put a smile on even the face of the sickest. Everyday, for me, is a challenge seen as an obstacle course I succeed in each time, not matter the difficulty of the obstacle.

The most enjoyable part of the job, for me, is meeting all different types of people from all over the south. Also, all the walking required forces you to maintain heart health, walking over 6 blocks 8 straight hours. I especially love the awesome feedback given from people who are leaving the hospital, rather being discharged or completing a visit, that we have the BEST staff in the south. That really makes my day worth while!

There is no typical day at work, each day is unpredictable & no day is like another. The company is a nonprofit, faith based organization that is guided by the princples of St. Vincent & the Sisters of Charities, & exists under the umbrella of Ascension Health Ministry. It's faith based foundation provides a moral compass for guiding patient care. Each floor has white boards with scriptures written on them to remind us that we are not just caring for people who are ill but also caring for their spirit. Most of the staff are patient oriented and work together well to make sure that patients get what they need in order to heal & to transition to a more independent setting (home, rehab, etc.). The hardest part of the job is having time to do what you are tasked to do well. The most enjoyable part of my job is connecting patients & families with resources they need to be healthy once they leave the hospital (i.e. providing medication assistance to purchase astronomically expensive medication, setting the up with a primary care clinic, educating the families about long-term care nursing home placements & qualifying for institutional Medicaid). Another unfortunate aspect of the job is that you have a lot of responsibility & duties that may cause you to work longer hours (10+ a day) but are not adequately compensated for it. Compared to other health systems the pay is below average for social workers. 

Working for UAB was a great experience for me, I made friends with my co workers that will last a lifetime.  UAB Medicine values their employees, they have excellent benefits and room for advancement.  It is hard for me to describe a typical work day as a Concierge at UAB because one day would consist of running from floor to floor helping patients sign in for their appointment with the newly installed self check in kiosk system.  Other days I would be dealing with an upset patients that drove from Mississippi and did not have an appointment scheduled.  
UAB strives to make the patient the most important person.  Patients have may options in healthcare today and UAB wants to make the environment friendly and appealing so the patients want to chose UAB.  Therefore the patient experience is very important at UAB Medicine.  
Working with patients was probably the most enjoyable part of my job.   I enjoyed helping patients and seeing their anxiety wash away from their face.  It is scary enough coming to a huge place like UAB, not knowing where your going or what floor your appointment is on. On a daily basis  I would see patients wandering around the main entrance of the Kirklin Clinic looking lost.  When I would approach them a look of relief always showed in their body language and they were always grateful for the help and surprised that I would go out of my way to help them.     
I'am very grateful for my experience working for UAB, it has helped me realize where my strengths are.and what I want to do.

The job itself isn't hard but, they make it. Extremely Micromanaged, supervisors stand over you day and night shift. Pointing at your screen asking if you called on this or have you done that, while you are literally on the phone talking to the nurse.  No cell phones are allowed or you will be sent home. They will send you home even if we are already short staffed, leaving the rest of us to split up the rooms to watch extra patients. You are expected to keep your eyes on the screens for 12  long hours. You will not be able to get up whenever you want. You have to ask the float person to sit for you just to use the restroom and that's if they aren't already sitting for someone else. You get two breaks 15mins and 30 mins and the floater has to sit  for you.  Keep in mind that sometimes the times you want to take your break my not be available so you have to pick different time slots. Also, with each shift you will either be  be assigned to watch the monitors, be a float person to give breaks/ put patients on telemetry boxes plus troubleshoot, or you have to drive or catch the bus to the main campus and stay over there putting patients on telemetry boxes. The work is also, tedious as you will have to measure each patients' QRS during charting time and the screens are positioned up in the air, so you will have to look up all shift. Your neck will  hurt!
