The people here are incredible. So may people from different fields coming together for one cause and everyone is so willing to help the other person. Very laid back, down to earth employees. It can get very hectic at time, but what company doesn't? You would never know who was Director titles up to C class executives for the simple fact of no one lets any titles go to their heads, you'd think they were at the same level as any other employee. The networking opportunity here is incredible, very easy to take any advice you were given and take it elsewhere if one was to ever leave. Many people here are connected with other worldwide. Very beneficial. Hardest part of the job is probably being able to pick up very quickly due to the fact that it is considered a small start up company with many dates to either complete tasks or lots to catch up on.

Typically, my team would show up a little before 7 a.m. for our 12 hour shift. We would kick off the day by reviewing what the night shift had accomplished/ any issues that they ran into. Since we were in the new 100,000 sq ft manufacturing facility Ultragenyx built, we all had an opportunity to wear many different hats. From drafting FDA compliant GMP certified documents to setting up and managing the bioreactors that held our AAV- Gene Therapies cell line, we were an integral part of this sights inauguration and implementation. I had an incredible boss who led from beneath, empowering the team to take the initiative responsibly. The hardest part of the job was when you were the one working in the BSC, and millions of dollars and lives were on the line if you made a mistake thawing and activating our cell line from a 1 ML. vial.

My manager contradicted himself, did not give context, was very difficult to understand and was at best an individual contributor.  He lacked the qualifications to be a manager and this did not help with picking up the role from him.  No context was given for any activity and there was nothing to work off of.  

The employees are not happy and say to be weary of asking questions at meetings and straightforward questions are met as a challenge.  All decisions are made by the highest role and all need to adjust to this.  An example is the sudden and abrupt acquisition on Dimensions and the combined with what I heard about budgets cuts  are directly related to this acquisition.  If you couple this with the lack of product in their pipeline make for the health of this company to not be as robust as desired.  My experience is around disappointment.

The culture and the people you work with here are unmatched, they are super supportive and happy to work with you and your needs. The only downside was the management side of things, there were some managers that were amazing, but if you were stuck with an unsupportive one it made things a little harder when it came to balancing out workload.

The support and camaraderie between the teams.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
I don’t process stress. There was no stress.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
I don’t know. The work was remote.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I never went in to the company, but at home it was processing Ultragenex tickets and inbound calls.

I enjoyed working on cutting edge studies for Rare Disease.  It was challenging as the company was new and in the middle of creating standard processes for all studies.  I had the oppertunity to work with a person that challenged my knowldge about Regulations and made work very interesting and enjoyable.

Interview was very time consuming initially.  No regards for peoples time. Managers are not attentive and very very unorganized.  Management does not follow through on what is deemed as corporate culture and  practice values.

Amazing mission and patient focused organization but unfortunately a few bad apples really do poison the culture.  Suspicion, lack of integrity, lack of support and insecurity dominates some departments.  It is sad.

I wouldn’t recommend anyone joining the company. As there is a lot of work pressure and management doesn’t care about their employees. People working there don’t feel supported and always stressed out. They will fire people on a regular basis and also keep a lot of contracts as it’s easier to let them go. 

I worked at Ultragenyx as an intern, and I learned so much. There is tons of time to learn about all different biochemistry experiments, and you will be able to work with cell culture as well. The people here are super nice, and the culture is great. We left early often if we got our work done.
