I worked as a seasonal HR admin and ideally I loved the work, I truly feel as though I have learned a lot about HR admin work, which was my goal when applying for the position. However, I wasn’t too impressed with the management team. There were about 8 other applicants who were hired for the same position. Whenever one of these members weren’t happy with how things were done, she would complain to management and would happily get people fired or moved to another department. I felt like they gave her too much power and were rude to the employees that were given complaints. They weren’t given any verbal warnings or did any investigation.. It was very odd. This same associate would host orientations and had at least one person terminated before their first start date because of “personal reasons”. Keep in mind, “her favorite part of the job was terminating people”. It became very redundant and I feel as though management failed to see the common denominator in every situation. As a result, it made most of us in the office feel as though our jobs weren’t secured if we made a mistake or didn’t do things the way another associate like. Also, management encouraged us to ask questions, but whenever I went to their office when I had any, they wouldn’t even look at me or would give me attitude. I have brought this up with another coworker and they felt the same, which made our experience not so great. There was no true management or support. Otherwise than that, I loved the work but would not recommend this company to anyone looking to get into HR. We work in a department where employees matter and should feel supported and it was everything but that. 

I prepared sign in logs for job applicants, delivered mail to various departments. Greeted clients of the Unommon Goods following protocol such as, knowing the the products they marketed through the company. Distributed pay checks to approximately 200 employees, and documented pay disputes. Always remained alert and calm when faced with emergencies. Example, a company client came in from New Jersey and needed driving directions back. I forwarded an email to the Manager he came to see. While speaking to him at my desk. Letting him know find an easier way for the client to travel back to New Jersey. The most enjoyable part of my job being creative. I went to a garage sale one weekend and found a Teddy Bear with a pouch. I bought 5 bags of mints at a 99cents store and stuffed the Teddy. Then I took a box of catalogs and arranged them around the Teddy. The candies helped sooth the guest and tranquil the employees. Along, with having a look through the Uncommon Goods Catalog to help famillarize them about the company.

This was a seasonal job so I didn't have it for very long. I was hired at the end of the season. A typical day started with me and my department checking to see if there were any items that needed to be put back in their proper location in the warehouse. If there was none we then checked to see if there were any orders that needed to be checked, corrected, and sent out to be packed and shipped. Throughout the day orders would fail quality assurance which would bring it to us to fix. Whether it be to remove an item, add an item, or fix the entire order. The coworkers in my department were great and really team oriented we watched out for each other and kept our department out of trouble. The hardest part about the job was the fact that our department was unappreciated by the other departments. It made things a little difficult. The most enjoyable part of the job was the interaction with everyone in the warehouse all of the different people made the job entertaining.

I worked at UncommonGoods for one year and had several positions.  UncommonGoods by far exceeded my expectations.  The things to know going in are that if you a seasonal employee, work as hard as you can and take it seriously.  Even then, you may not get a full time job offer but if you are in pursuit of it, you need to live the values, contribute to the team, and seek challenges.  No matter what role, UncommonGoods is committed to you and your experience at the company.  They genuinely want to be their customers favorite place to work, represent and showcase unique and handmade goods, and make it a place you feel comfortable working and somewhere you love.  They have (honestly) quite some ways to go on each front.  They know this. They recognize it.  And they are committed to fighting each step of the way.  I respect that.  But you will always have someone's ear to listen to you, to bounce ideas off of, and to discuss the future of the company.  Plus the managers (at least the 4 that I had) genuinely cared.

UncommonGoods is a ecommerce business which sells odd gifts. Most of these gifts are recycled. On a day to day about 800-1200 orders max come through the warehouse. The job functions are divided into three groups. Pickers to gather the items in the orders, giftboxers to giftbox requested items, and packers who package the products to ship to customers.

Management here is without a clue. During the holiday season the orders spike up to 10,000 a day and often we were understaffed or overstaffed. The manner in which the manager chose to export the orders from the computers made days extend often 10 past the time end of day was. The way the pickers were given order forms was changed and made more difficult. Employees were not being heard about the difficulties that persued these changes. I could go on all day, like I said really good place to work if you like working for genuine idiots.

A typical day is walking in to smiling faces and being surrounded by people who for the most part like working with one another. You know in advance what your duties are and you're left on your own to get it done. The supervisors are always there willing to help when needed and they help without making you feel like you're bothering them and they don't make you wait before they help.

Since being with UncommonGoods, I've learned two new timekeeping programs, TimeClock and ADP. For me the hardest part of the job was the location, (mind you I never missed a day and I was only late once, due to the R Train). The company is a little bit off the beaten trail. The most enjoyable parts of the job, in this order: the people, being trusted to do your job without being micro managed, the perks like 40% off, the occasional massages and the CEO’s philosophy of Customer’s first and employees first, it made you feel valued.

Uncommon Goods is such an amazing place to work. The pay is great, the staff is great and the hours are great. I just wish the job was permanent instead of seasonal. The main downside is that you are on your feet for a long time and your back, feet, hands, and over all body will hurt after a while, but they do provide back braces and gloves for free.The job is fast paced and busy, so if you can't handle that this job isn't for you. They treated us really well, you were allowed to go home if you were sick with no hassle, we got lunch and dinner often as a thank you. We got gift cards also. You receive a 40% discount for being an employee too. The Lead coworkers were very helpful and friendly. I looked forward to going to work every day. I actually almost cried on my last day. I will truly miss working at Uncommon Goods! I will definitely apply for the next season without a doubt.

A typical day at work for me usually started off with warm greetings and smiling faces. Everyone arrived to work as if they were looking forward to being there. After the good morning's were passed around we'd ease right into work. I'd begin by unlocking the gates to the freight elevators. Then continue on to make phone calls regarding expected shipments. After the shipments are confirmed, I'd prep the workplace for the UPS deliveries. The freight shipments would usually start coming in after my first break, around the same time UPS deliveries are done with. I'd head down to pick up freight with the pallet jack, inspect the pallets, load it onto the elevator, and unload it onto the work floor. Then breakdown the pallets and process the merchandise accordingly. Towards the end of the day it's mostly cleaning and preparing for the next day.

Even though the job was entirely remote I felt like the higher ups put in 100% to make sure you had a smooth workday. I loved the week and a half we received of paid training, it was super informative and helpful, for the most part the team leads were pretty cool people…customers on the other hand were a lot to handle, especially if you’re working here during the holidays, don’t get me wrong you still get calls from super patient customers tho. 

When it comes to scheduling, you’re either put on phones or emails/chats. For the most part it’s mixed thru out the day, which I liked because being on phones for the whole day would’ve been stressful. Sometimes they will move you into phones if emails area is dead but once phone traffic goes down it’s back to emails. 

All in all I’d say a pretty good company to work for.  



A typical day at work would be taking orders from customers via phone. Return emails to customers with problems regarding their order. I learned that for a company to grow the customer is the top priority. I like that from the owner to the managers, to the supervisors, to the customer service reps. everybody was treated the same. One team. The hardest part of the job was taking a call, engaging in live chat, and answering an email all at the same time. The most enjoyable part is when a customer says how much I've helped them. Also working with my co-workers and the overall atmosphere of the job. It's a seasonal job and I really love it. The supervisors are professional and a joy to work with.
